12 best ir remote extenders
IR (Infrared) remote extenders are electronic devices designed to extend the range of your remote control signals, allowing you to control audiovisual equipment from a greater distance or through obstacles. These extenders are often used in home entertainment systems, home automation setups, and commercial AV installations. Here's what you need to know about IR remote extenders:
Functionality: IR remote extenders work by capturing the IR signals from your remote control and then transmitting them to the target device via an IR emitter (blaster) positioned in front of the device's IR receiver. This enables you to control devices that are not within direct line-of-sight or are located in another room.
Components: A typical IR remote extender system consists of three main components:
- IR Receiver: This component receives the IR signals from your remote control. It is usually placed in the same room as the remote control.
- IR Emitter (Blaster): The IR emitter is positioned near the IR receiver on the target device. It transmits the captured IR signals to control the device.
- Control Unit: The control unit or main hub connects to both the IR receiver and the IR emitter. It processes the incoming IR signals and relays them to the appropriate emitter to control the target device.
Range and Coverage: The effectiveness of an IR remote extender depends on its range and coverage. Some extenders can work over distances of up to 100 feet or more, depending on the model. They can transmit signals through walls, doors, and other obstacles.
Compatibility: IR remote extenders are compatible with a wide range of audiovisual equipment, including TVs, DVD/Blu-ray players, stereo systems, cable/satellite boxes, and more. They can work with virtually any device that uses IR remote control.
Wired vs.Wireless: IR remote extenders come in both wired and wireless configurations. Wired extenders use physical cables to connect the IR receiver, emitter, and control unit, while wireless models use radio frequency (RF) or other wireless technologies to transmit the IR signals.
Power Source: Most IR remote extenders require power to operate. This power can be supplied through batteries, AC adapters, or USB connections, depending on the model.
Installation: Installing an IR remote extender typically involves placing the IR receiver in the room with your remote control, positioning the IR emitter in front of the target device's IR sensor, and connecting everything to the control unit or hub.
Applications: IR remote extenders are commonly used in home theater setups to control audiovisual components hidden in cabinets or located in different rooms. They are also used in commercial settings, such as conference rooms and retail environments, to control AV equipment from a central location.
Accessories: Some IR remote extenders may come with additional accessories, such as mounting brackets, adhesive strips, or signal repeaters, to enhance their functionality and ease of installation.
In summary, IR remote extenders are valuable accessories for controlling audiovisual equipment from a distance or in situations where direct line-of-sight communication is not possible. They come in various configurations, including wired and wireless models, and are compatible with a wide range of devices, making them a useful addition to home entertainment and automation systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this compatible with a tcl riki tv |
Answer: | I am assuming you mean a TCL Roku TV correct? I just purchased this for mine and it works like a charm. With one caveat, if you power it with the USB from the TV, you have to manually turn the TV on to activate power to the USB. If you power it will and external USB power supply you will be able to turn the TV on and off. Also keep in mind the TV's IR receiver is on the bottom of the screen in the middle in a whitish plastic area below the screen. |
Question: | Does the transmitter portion need to be directly over the device to be controlled, or can it be a few feet away in line of sight |
Answer: | As long as in line of sight. |
Question: | Which is the receiver and which is the emitter?? One is larger than the other |
Answer: | The picture depicts from left to right the receiver, the emitter and the USB. The receiver is the larger one. |
Question: | Where exactly do you put the emitter on the cable box? Only the volume and power are working on the remote |
Answer: | I reviewed this item as junk; the emitter being the issue. You need to look through (use a flash lite) the (usually red) cover on the cable box and find its emitter. You then need to place the "all in one' emitter DIRECTLY over it. Good luck getting it to work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I currently require two remotes to control all my audio/TV equipment. I cannot get them all onto one master remote. Do I need two systems |
Answer: | No you do not need two systems. This unit simply relays IR signal(s) sent from any remote to your devices hidden away. You stick one of the four IR blasters coming out of the unit on the IR eye of each of your devices and the IR receiver on the edge of your TV. Then you point any remote at TV and press button. The signal will leave your remote to the IR receiver and through the cord the unit. From there the unit will replay the signal to all 4 IR blasters that are placed on the IR eyes of your devices (STB, DVD, AV Receiver, etc...) |
Question: | This item can work with my logitech harmony one remote |
Answer: | Yes. The way this system is designed it will basically pick up any remote using IR technology, which is what the Logitech remote uses. Cheers! |
Question: | Can anyone say with certainty this WILL work with directv dvr and directv genie plus other components? Seems there are several conflicting opinions |
Answer: | I have this BAFX Repeater, and I also have the DTV HR54-700 satellite box. The repeater does NOT work at ALL with this satellite box. The IR signals come from my Philips Pronto TSU7000 - AND the repeater works FINE with all other connected devices Such as my Sharp Aquos TV, the LED Bias Lighting module on the back of that, a Denon receiver, RCA receiver, and a Philips DVD player The Pronto works intermittently with the satellite box by itself - as long as it is NOT too close to the satellite box As soon as I put the BAFX emitter over the IR receiver window - - IR stops working. I've put up to 6 layers of painters tape over the window - - NOTHING. And Yes - - I have verified (watching with a digital camera: NOT an iPhone) - the emitter sends an IR signal when the BAFX system receives one. - SO - - My thoughts: DTV may be using a different IR light wavelength than what is transmitted by the BAFX. The question of course is - - WHY would DTV do that ?? Answer is ea$y to figure out. It's $o you can't u$e an all-in-one remote - - you have to RENT one of their$ |
Question: | What is the length of the receiver cable |
Answer: | The receiver cable length is about 5 feet. You can buy a CAT5 extender setup which allows you to go much further here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016VEFI00/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_GsokEbPHY5B42 |

How the IR Repeater Kit works
The setup is very is simple.
You will simply place the included distribution block in a location near where you wish to keep the devices you need to control with your remotes. From this block, you will run the provided IR receiver cable (or the eye of the kit) from the distribution block and place it in a location where you can point the remote control at, this may be on the bezel of the TV, on a shelf ledge, the wall or other such locations. You will need to place this IR receiver no further than 30' from where you will be using the remote control.
Now, plug one of the emitter cables into the distribution block and run that cable to where you have your devices being controlled located. You will place one emitter head from this cable over the IR receiver on the devices being controlled.
Lastly, simply plug the repeater kit into power using the supplied power adapter and you're ready to go!

Additional Important Notes
Plugging directly into IR ports on devices: On some devices you may notice IR in/out ports. You MAY be able to use a Male to Male cable to connect our kit with such devices. We cannot promise that this will always work. It will depend on whether the device manufacturer has wired their port the same was as our kit and also handles the signal in the same manner. We have verified that many Onkyo & Denon devices do work with this but cannot make promises as to this.
Plasma TV's: Plasma TV's emit stray infrared signals. In some rare cases these stray signals may interfere with operation of the kit. In such cases simply moving the IR receiver slightly further from the TV will resolve this issue. LED & LCD TVs do not have this problem.
Extending via CAT5 lines: For this we offer a prepackaged CAT5 adapter kit that may be purchased separately. The parts may also be obtained individually on their own as needed.
- IR remote control cable extends the signal to a video source like a Blu-ray player so it can be controlled from your TV; Blue LED in IR Receiver bulb verifies the signal transmission
- Home theater accessory repeats the IR signal to a DVD player, STB box, Receiver or other A/V source with an IR sensor; Route the infrared remote control extender cable out of sight with a wall mounted TV; Install the IR Transmitter end in a concealed equipment closet to hide a CATV box and control it remotely
- Simple installation of this lightweight IR cable; Locate the IR Blaster near the source sensor to repeat the signal to the source; Place the IR Receiver in a convenient location with line of sight of your hand-held remote; IR Tx and Rx cables have adhesive circles on the back for mounting
- USB powered IR extension cable has an integrated 6 foot Y-cable to receive 5V USB power; USB cable on the IR remote extender cable connects to a TV USB power port or to a USB wall charger
- Universal compatibility of IR extender cable with most A/V equipment with infrared sensors (not RF); 30 degree IR Receiver angle provides plenty of leeway to get the right angle with your remote
User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with newest Spectrum Arris device |
Answer: | It works with my new Arris DCX3510M HD DVR box. However the IR reception range is only 7-8 ft max. And you will need a separate USB power supply because the Arris USB ports only work when the box is on. |
Question: | How close does the IR emitter need to be to the device receiving the signal |
Answer: | The smallest one needs to be right on point to work. You will need a second person to help while you adjust and they try the remote. |
Question: | Does it have to be Synced to the remote |
Answer: | No. This is a simple device that simply passes on the infrared signal. Whatever the remote shoots into this device's receiver will be transmitted to the other end. It took only minutes to set this up. We put cable box behind the TV screen. Attached the receiver end to the underside of the TV, near current remote sensor just so it is the same target area you are used to, the other end of the extender gets aimed at the cable box on the other side. The cable box has USB so that was used for the power. Amazing product |
Question: | What does 10feet mean |
Answer: | Means 10 feet long from starting to end. |

Multizone: Protect from Interference Most IR extenders are programmed to pass any signal that is sent through the receiver. Sometimes this may disrupt your setup as a few devices in your closet run on a similar IR frequency and cause interference with one another. The Multizone feature protects your devices from interference from other devices. This gives you the ability to have certain devices controlled only from specific areas in your setup. This has been a requested feature from many of our customers as they have extended IR signals but unintentionally were controlling two devices located in the same space. Cable boxes have especially been a pain since multiple cable boxes are easier to have based in the same area. Now with the BlastIR Wireless Multizone you are able to ensure you will only control the box that is attached to one of your TVs and not the other. The Channel IR System The Multizone feature works on a 10-channel system, this system gives you the ability to interact with your devices without needing to worry about your Wireless Extenders interfereing with one another. The system also gives you the option of using any number of transmitters or receivers on any given channel. This gives you complete freedom of choice for where your displays and devices can be placed without having to complicate your setup. The BlastIR Wireless Multizone Receivers will only communicate with the BlastIR Wireless Multizone Emitters that are set to the same channel. If you happen to own the classic BlastIR Wireless, this product will also work with it. Channel 0 on this product will allow IR signals to be sent between the two diffferent versions.
- NOTE Some devices us RF instead of IR for remote control. The Blast IR Wireless Pro only works with IR devices.
- 10-channel system that gives you the ability to interact with your devices without needing to worry about your Wireless Extenders interfering with one another
- Included USB and AC power cables, extra IR cables, mounting adhesive, and rubber feet
- Known compatibility issues with: Yamaha HTR 6140 and Arris DCX 3520E-M
- Control any IR device from a distance. Blu-Ray Players, Cable and DVR Boxes, AV Receivers, Logitech Harmony Devices, Anything else that uses an IR signal!
User questions & answers
Question: | I can't figure out where the connections (V+/G/ST/IR) go from the wall receiver to the main unit (+12VDC/GND/Status/Signal) - help pls |
Answer: | They connect from from the receiver to the main unit via standard telephone cable (CAT3) not supplied. V+ is +12VDC, G is GND(or the minus side of the power supply), ST is the status LED and IR is the signal. |
Question: | Does this work with FIOS 7xxx HD DVRs |
Answer: | It works perfect with va comcast DVR. So I magazine other DVRs will work. You'll have to find the right spots to place the 2 sensors for best performance. The only device that the infrared device doesn't work well with is an older Sony reciever I have hooked up. I only get volume control with this. |
Question: | What is the maximun length of cable that the BlastIR can support? Will it reach over 150ft Cat5e cable to send it's repeated signal |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | can I operate 2 televisions off of 1 cable box |
Answer: | I have a TV and cable box in my man cave and HDMI ran overhead to a TV in adjoining exercise room. I have an HDMI splitter in the man cave. I want to simply be able to use the cable remote from the man cave TV to change channels from the exercise room, going through one wall. I'll just take the remote to whichever room I'm in. Do I need anything else other than this item. I couldn't ask all this in the questions, maybe someone will see this answer, sounds similar. I'm already operating 2 TVs off a single cable box with a splitter but want to use the remote in both rooms. |

Multi-Zone Control
The BlastIR Wireless Pro supports up to 10 zones with independent sending/receiving frequencies. (kind of like different channels on a walkie-talkie). You can change the zone by using a very small rotating switch located at the bottom of the receiver and emitter pucks. The Receivers will only communicate with the Emitters that are set to the same zone. You can also purchase extra Emitters, or Receivers individually if you do not need an extra full pair.
All-to-All
The BlastIR Wireless Pro can be set to send the signal from All Receivers To All emitters by setting all the units to the same "Channel" or "Zone"
Zone-To-Zone
The BlastIR Wireless Pro can be set to only send the Signal from one Receiver to specific emitters.

Product description
This newly designed 38-56 kHz Wideband STB IR Receiver Extender is made and sold exclusively by Inteset Technologies. It will work with nearly all Cable Set Top Boxes and DVRs that have an active IR IN port. Previously you had to choose either the 38 kHz or the 56 kHz model. This product eliminates having to make that choice but it will not work with all A/V devices. Please check compatibility below.
This allows you to hide your STBs and DVRs behind closed doors in a cabinet or closet. The small receiver bud (1 1/4"L x 7/8"W x 5/8"H) will handle all of the same functions as if your device was out in the open. It comes with self stick tape on the back of the IR bud for easy installation. Be sure to mount the bud with a straight line-of-sight to your remote.
It will work with most Comcast Xfinity and Verizon FIOS boxes as well as other cable providers that use Arris, Cisco, Scientific Atlanta and Motorola boxes except those noted below.
It will NOT WORK with AT&T Uverse STBs, Motorola DCT or DCH Series, QIP2500, QIP6000 Series, DISH or DirectTV boxes. These models and some models specific to particular cable providers either do not have an IR IN port or that port is not active. The 4250 HDC is one of those. It also will NOT WORK with A/V Receivers, Amplifiers, TVs or IR Repeater Systems as the connectors are usually wired differently. If you have any questions about compatibility, contact us before you buy any extender.
If you have any questions or issues you can contact us at: "universalremotes.net"
- WORKS ONLY w/CABLE Set Top Boxes (STB). Please check your device to be sure you have an active 3.5 mini input port labeled "IR IN". Contact us if you have any questions about compatibility before you buy.

User questions & answers
Question: | when it is receiving an ir signal from the hand-held TV remote? Does remote sensor have a led to indicate |
Answer: | Yes, everything was fine and very fast. Whenever it detects an IR signal from any source then the indicator is blink. |
Question: | What is length of this receiver cable |
Answer: | The length of receiver cable is 5ft |
Question: | Is there an extension available for the receiver module? 5' isn't long enough for my setup |
Answer: | I have used these for years where the receiver may not be right at the cabinet or closet location. I normally extend the cable using an shielded 2 conductor cable. I have also used non shielded with no issues, but i believe the included cable has a shield. I have not tested the length it would be good for, but i have gone at least 50' this way. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have 6 (Hitachi) projectors and need a receiver for each in a planetarium setting. Can individual receivers be purchased |
Answer: | They connect from from the receiver to the main unit via standard telephone cable (CAT3) not supplied. V+ is +12VDC, G is GND(or the minus side of the power supply), ST is the status LED and IR is the signal. |
Question: | When using IR emitter bud, will emitter transmit through the bud and the main emitter unit at the same time or the signal only goes through the bud |
Answer: | It works perfect with va comcast DVR. So I magazine other DVRs will work. You'll have to find the right spots to place the 2 sensors for best performance. The only device that the infrared device doesn't work well with is an older Sony reciever I have hooked up. I only get volume control with this. |
Question: | How to attach the emitter bud |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Do you know id this would be compatible with a Hitachi projector |
Answer: | I have a TV and cable box in my man cave and HDMI ran overhead to a TV in adjoining exercise room. I have an HDMI splitter in the man cave. I want to simply be able to use the cable remote from the man cave TV to change channels from the exercise room, going through one wall. I'll just take the remote to whichever room I'm in. Do I need anything else other than this item. I couldn't ask all this in the questions, maybe someone will see this answer, sounds similar. I'm already operating 2 TVs off a single cable box with a splitter but want to use the remote in both rooms. |

User questions & answers
Question: | By using an IR Receiver, do i still need to have an hdmi cable running between my tv and cable box |
Answer: | The device has nothing to do with and does not interface with the HDMI cable which I assume you are using to transmit the video signal from the STB/receiver to the TV/Video output device. So if you want to TV to both change channels/volume AND show a picture, you will need the device AND the HDMI cable. Or, you can replace both of them with a Stargate PN25 flux capacitor running at 25 to30 MHz through any model Magic Bullet. |
Question: | Will this work with Motorola DCX |
Answer: | It didn't work with mine |
Question: | Will it work for a Verizon Fios remote control P265v |
Answer: | Please note that it does NOT work with all boxes that have an IR IN port. Mainly SA Explorer boxes. We do list compatible and non compatible boxes in the product description section. Check with us before you buy. [email protected] |
Question: | Will this work with a Samsung 6350 TV and the Verizon QIP7232 box |
Answer: | The TV model is irrelevant as long as your box is currently operating it correctly. As to the STB, your question is answered in the device's description: "It will work with QIP7000 series, VMS1100, IPC1100,CHS335,CHS435, all Verizon set top boxes except QIP2500 or QIP6000 series ." |
