This is a genuine ancient Roman bronze coin struck during the reign of Maximian.

Maximian was a partner in the Tetrarchic system of government, where the empire was ruled by two senior emperors, one in the east and one in the west, each with a junior to assist them. Under this system he lost the provinces of Britain and Gaul to a rebel naval commander called Carausius and his successor Allectus. The territory was later recovered by Constantius Chlorus. JULIA CORNELIA SALONINA - Ancient Roman Bronze Coin in Folder with Certificate of Authenticity 253-268 AD - WIFE OF GALLIENUS

Product description

This is a genuine ancient Roman bronze coin struck during the reign of Gallienus.

The fate of an emperor’s spouse was ultimately tied to the fortunes of her husband, father-in-law and sons. With the capture of her father-in-law, Valerian, by the Persians, the army rebelled against her husband Gallienus on the Rhine and killed her son Saloninus. Earlier around c.258 CE, her other young son Valerian II died in suspicious circumstances in Illyria where he was representing the dynasty. Finally, on the death of her husband, following his defeat in battle, she was also murdered on the orders of the Senate, as they sought to cleanse the throne for the next emperor.

In the spring of A.D. 260, the Roman Emperor Valerian was taken prisoner by the Persian “King of Kings.” This humiliating capture, unprecedented in the long annals of Rome, ended Valerian’s reign, leaving his overmatched son Gallienus on the throne. By then, Julia Cornelia Salonina had been wife to Gallienus for almost a decade, bearing him three sons: the princes Valerian II, Saloninus, and Marinianus. The middle son, Saloninus, was executed in 260 in Gaul during the insurrection that led to the creation of the Gallic Empire.

The Age of Chaos, also known as the Crisis of the Third Century, was a fifty-year period of extreme political and economic volatility that almost saw the disintegration of the mighty Roman Empire. From 235-284, no fewer than 25 would-be emperors claimed the throne. The coinage in this period suffered accordingly, with quality, size, weight, and fineness all adversely affected, and bronze replacing silver as the metal used.
