12 best bottled water for betta fish
Bottled water for betta fish is a topic related to aquarium water treatments and the care of fish as aquatic pets. When it comes to providing the best water conditions for your betta fish, it's essential to understand the characteristics of bottled water and how it may impact your pet's health.
Types of Bottled Water:
Distilled Water: Distilled water is purified through a distillation process, which removes most minerals and impurities. While it's free of contaminants, it's also devoid of essential minerals that betta fish need.
Spring Water: Spring water comes from natural springs and usually contains minerals, which can be beneficial for betta fish. However, the mineral content may vary between brands.
Deionized Water (DI): Deionized water has had its ions removed, making it very pure. However, it lacks essential minerals and can be too "soft" for betta fish.
Tap Water: In some cases, tap water can be used for betta fish, but it may require conditioning to remove chlorine, chloramine, and adjust pH levels.
Water Parameters for Bettas:
- Betta fish thrive in slightly acidic water with a pH level of around 6.5 to 7.0.
- They also prefer water temperatures between 78°F to 82°F (25-28°C).
- Bettas are hardy, but they do need some minerals in their water. Overly soft water can lead to health issues, such as fin rot.
Choosing Bottled Water:
- Spring water with a pH close to the desired range can be suitable for bettas. However, it's essential to test the water and adjust as needed.
- Mixing different types of bottled water or tap water with the right mineral supplements can create an ideal environment for your betta.
Conditioning and Testing:
- Always condition the water to remove chlorine and chloramine if you're using tap water.
- Regularly test the water parameters (pH, temperature, ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates) to ensure they are within the appropriate range.
Acclimation:
- When changing the water in your betta's tank, it's crucial to acclimate the fish slowly to prevent stress or shock.
Consistency:
- Whatever type of water you choose, maintaining consistent water parameters is vital for betta health. Sudden changes in water conditions can stress your fish.
Remember that while bottled water can be used for betta fish, it's essential to understand the water parameters and provide any necessary mineral supplements to ensure your pet's well-being. Regular monitoring and water quality management are key to maintaining a healthy and happy betta fish.

This easy-to-use conditioner detoxifies harmful ammonia in tap water, neutralizes chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals, and features stress reducing slime. Tap water and well water contain dangerous substances like chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals that must be neutralized for the health and safety of your Goldfish. BettaSafe works to create a safe environment and maintain optimum balance between water changes by neutralizing chloramine and turning chlorine into harmless salt. BettaSafe also binds to heavy metals to create a large, safe molecule that can be physically removed by your filter. These included vitamins and minerals work to increase the vitality, breeding behavior and activity of your fish. Proprietary, advanced biopolymers produced by living organisms such as kelp are included in BettaSafe to support beneficial bacteria necessary for healthy and clear aquarium water. These added ingredients do not pollute water, but work to reduce pollution by strengthening the bacterial bed.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do i need this of i have well water |
Answer: | If 5ml = 1GL For 10Gl u need 50 ml. |
Question: | Can betta fish live with guppies |
Answer: | I would usually wait about 10 to 15 minutes before adding the fish and it worked. Hope that helps. |
Question: | Why does the new bottle need 14 drops per gallon instead of 7? Did the formula/ingredients change or just the directions |
Answer: | I always mix the water conditioner into the water before putting the fish back in the tank. I clean the tank and then put the recommended amount of "dirty" water (what the fish has already been living in since it has the beneficial bacteria in it necessary for a healthy environment) back in the tank and fill the tank the rest of the way up with fresh water. Then I add the water conditioner to the tank and mix it into the dirty / fresh water before reintroducing the fish back in to the tank. |
Question: | Can I add this to my 5 gallon tank between water changes? I used filtered water and plan on changing the water every 10-14days |
Answer: | I don’t use distilled water so, I’m sorry, but I can’t answer that. |

Question: | Should I wait a day before adding the new Betta fish or is it ok to go ahead and put the fish in the tank after adding this product |
Answer: | Yes. These lights are WONDERFUL! I am completely thrilled. Give off lots of light. I did end up using 3M tape (the kind for non-marking your wall) as the tape provided didn't feel all that secure. I'm buying these as gifts...what bathroom couldn't use a bit more bright light? |
Question: | Do you put this in the water with the betta? or do you add it when you are changing the water |
Answer: | These are LED type lights. They shouldn't burn out. LEDs are usually rated at 50,000 hours. Only I have seen them do after a long long time is slightly dim from age |
Question: | What gh/kh does this raise distilled/RO water to |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this clean the water right away so i can add fish right after or wait for it to settle |
Answer: | I would recommend API Stress Zyne Plus. My fish kept dying for the first few weeks. It took almost 8 weeks to for the tank to cycle. So get 2 or 3 fist to start and nothing fancy. Keep testing for Amonia levels. Once the tank cycles, it should be at 0. Then you can get fish you want to keep. |
Question: | How often are you supposed to use this product |
Answer: | The directions state 25 ml per 10 gallons on day 1 (100 ml) and then 10 ml per 10 gallons on day 2 and 3 (40 ml per day) so a total of 180 ml for your 40 gallon breader. I do a sustainment treatment every week of 5 ml per 10 gallons (another 20 ml). I think this is a great way to get and keep a large colony of beneficial bacteria. Good luck with the new tank! |
Question: | Do you have to treat the water and then put it in the tank or can you do water change and then immediately add this stuff? I've been adding water and then this stuff rigth after in the tank |
Answer: | The smaller 4 oz size would be great for a 6 gallon tank. It would last for quite awhile but not so long you would not have fresh product available when you do reorder. Add a few drops to your filter after cleaning it to jump start beneficial enhancers there as well. |
Question: | can I use this with my live plant tank? will it bad for the live plant |
Answer: | If you're looking to set up a new tank, i'd use the biggest bottle possible; the more bacteria the better the start you'll have. However, this is not a product i generally recommend, because the bacteria contained in these bottles are temporary spot holders for the real bacteria to colonize your filter after a few weeks. I'd rather you get microbelift's nite out II or Dr tims one and only (a bit more expensive), which contains the actual bacteria your filter needs. |

Feed Your Fish Daily
Feed your fish twice daily with API Fish Food which contains nutritionally enhanced proteins, allowing for easy uptake of nutrients and maximum absorption, resulting in less excrement for clear, clean water. Take time to observe fish to ensure they are active & healthy and be sure to check water temperature.
Test Water Quality Weekly
An aquarium is a closed environment and in order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. The 5 common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH - all of which may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API MASTER TEST KITS or API 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS. It is also a good time to add API STRESS ZYME to keep your aquarium & gravel clean.
Change 25% Water Every 2 Weeks
In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API STRESS COAT.
Restore Your Ecosystem Monthly
It is important to change your filter media & clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API QUICK START to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work in a freshwater aquarium (75gal |
Answer: | this removes the chlorine, etc. almost immediately, I add it to the aquarium when doing water changes, ands just pour the water into the tank. remember this just removes the harmful chemicals, your tank will still have to cycle through the nitrogen cycle if you are setting up a new tank. |
Question: | Will this work in a freshwater aquarium (75gal |
Answer: | Per Seachem's instructions, if you are doing a partial water change of 35%, if you are adding water directly from the tap (such as with a water changer such as a Python or Aqueon) you add enough Prime for the volume of the whole tank. On the other hand, if you're removing 35% and then adding the water using a bucket, you can dechlorinate the amount of each bucket. For example, if you're using a 3 gallon bucket, 6 drops Prime per bucket, and then add that to the tank. The Prime works almost immediately, so just add the drops to the bucket, and then it is ready to pour into your tank. |

Seachem Stability will rapidly and safely establish the aquarium biofilter in freshwater and marine systems, thereby preventing the #1 cause of fish death: "new tank syndrome".
For over three decades, Seachem has been a company rooted in sound science. Our experience in the hobby and educated staff of chemists and biologists are part of the package when you purchase Seachem products. Seachem remains as one of the few surviving independent and privately owned pet care companies. Seachem is owned and operated by hobbyists. All of our employees are hobbyists who maintain aquariums at home and at the office. Seachem itself was started because one such passionate hobbyist - Dr. Leo G. Morin (Founder) - recognized the lack of available solutions to aquarists'.. This resulted in Seachem’s very first product: Cupraplex (today known as Cupramine). Over thirty years later Seachem is still approaching old problems in a new way.
Seachem’s philosophy is that the knowledgeable hobbyist makes the best customer. This is reflected in solid and reliable customer education and support as well as products proven in science and performance. While Seachem has grown rapidly into a national and international firm, it retains the culture of a small company and is readily available to its customers.
- TANK STABILIZATION: Seachem Stability will rapidly and safely establish the aquarium biofilter in freshwater and marine systems, thereby preventing the #1 cause of fish death: "new tank syndrome".
- TREATMENT: Stability is formulated specifically for the aquarium and contains a synergistic blend of aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative bacteria which facilitate the breakdown of waste organics, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
- BACTERIA GROWTH: The necessary conditions for the growth of Stability's bacterial strains encompass a very broad range. When other bacteria begin to die off (usually from high organic loads caused by the unknown death of an organism), Stability simply becomes more effective.
- USE: Shake Seachem Stability well before use and turn off UV/ozone filter. Use 1 capful (5 mL) for each 40 L (10 US gallons) on the first day with a new aquarium. Then use 1 capful for each 80 L (20 US gallons) daily for 7 days. Fish and other aquatic species may be introduced at any time as long as the dosage is maintained for 7 days.
- SAFE: The bacteria employed by Stability are non-sulfur fixing and will not produce toxic hydrogen sulfide. Stability is completely harmless to all aquatic organisms as well as aquatic plants, thus there is no danger of overuse.
User questions & answers
Question: | What size bottle should I order for a 120 gallon tank |
Answer: | Absolutely! In fact many importers and retailers use API Stress Zyme to clean up their live rock when it arrives. API contains millions of live bacteria that work synergistically with all reef inhabitants. In a reef aquarium in areas back in the aquarium or within the rocks that we can not easily reach, Stress Zyme will digest any decaying organic matter, reducing overall maintenance, keeping your reef aquarium cleaner. |
Question: | how do i contact the seller |
Answer: | As for length of time you can store, I use it weekly and it lasts for about four months or so. Does not seem to lose effectiveness in that time. |
Question: | Do I need to use this every time I change 100% of water in my 3 gallon tank |
Answer: | Donot mix tap water conditioner with stress zyme and stress coat or donot use it together in same time doing this youre likely killing live bacteria’s present in zymes and stress coat, first use tap water conditioner wait 10 -15 minutes to circulate the water then add stress coat or zymes to work perfectly.follow the instruction in bottle. |
Question: | What is the difference between pristine and stability? is bacteria different? or just a different name for basically the same product |
Answer: | In short, you don't need the Stress Zyme if you already are using the Quick Start. Here's a longer answer:The API Stress Coat is primarily a de-chlorinator and has aloe added to help maintain a healthy slime coat on the fish so this should always be added to the water and mixed before adding to the tank. The API Quick Start is meant to jump start the biological cycling of a tank and is only needed for new tanks or potentially semi established tanks that have a spike in ammonia and nitrite levels which could be caused by adding more fish. You can stop using this once your water chemistry has stabilized. API Stress Zyme is very similar in function to the Quick Start and is generally chosen to improve water clarity or stabilize chemistry in more established tanks. You don't need to use both simultaneously and would probably never see the difference compared to using just one. On another note, I always add my bacteria after there is no chance there is any chlorine so they have a better chance of proliferating. I would add either the Quick Start or the Stress Zyme the day after a water change, directly into the tank. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this safe to use in a reef tank |
Answer: | The main point of this product to to establish beneficial bacteria on your biological filtration media within the filter. I try to add it as directly to the filter as possible, and would avoid any media that may block it from getting through. The filter socks might be fine, but i'd be concerned about the skimmer. Maybe have the skimmer off for an hour or so after using this, to allow maximum filtration through the media. |
Question: | How long this product can be stored before it expires? Also, would its effectiveness reduce during long time storage |
Answer: | if you look at the back of the bottle above the blue line you will see stamped print with the date, mine (almost empty) is good til 03/2016.ar bottom you will see a phone number 1-800-847-0659 that answers all questions. |
Question: | can i mix stress coat, stress zyme and tap water conditioner? if so what amount of each should i mix? doing this harm my fishes |
Answer: | NO! There is a Marine Quick Start and a Freshwater Quick Start for a reason. Marine beneficial bacteria will die in freshwater and Freshwater beneficial bacteria will die in marine water. Marine and Freshwater beneficial bacterias are very different from one another. Api makes Makes both versions. |
Question: | Can I mix this with API Quick Start and API Stress Coat+ in a gallon every time I do water changes weekly? Or just pour it directly in my 5.5 tank |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do i have to remove filter socks or turn off skimmer after adding |
Answer: | Please contact us through the order page, after we confirm the order information, we can send you the accessories. |
Question: | What is the expiration date? How long does it keep |
Answer: | You could use this to create the siphon |
Question: | Can I use marine quick start in freshwater |
Answer: | I wouldn’t use it for car coolant. There is normally a drain petcock on the bottom of your radiator for draining coolant. |
Question: | Does It Have Parmesan In It |
Answer: | I lost track of that part from the get-go. It was maybe 8-10 inches long, approx. half inch wide. I use the pump w/o a tube at the end, UNLESS I need some depth or reach, and then I use a piece of "swing pipe" which must have a little of outer surface shaved off in order to fit; and I can cut the length as I need. Not a bad product, and I couldn't find this style in Wichita, where I live, so I ordered this, not bad priced. |
