I know why you picked up this book. Drawing faces is something so many of us long to do. It’s a creative rite of passage, an artist’s challenge to check off, and a handy skill to master all in one. Faces are something we look at from morning to night and often after bedtime. They’re readable and relatable.

This book is not a book on portraiture. It is a book on faces. What’s the difference? While portraits tell us what we see, faces can describe who the person is. We’re not transferring colors and lines from reality to paper; we’re translating the mood, features, and even dreams of the people we’re drawing—both real and imagined. Beginning again with what’s most essential, we look at a handful of face shape options, then confront the most fun and expressive feature: the eyes! From there, we work downward, taking a quick stop at the nose and then playing with mouths. Finally, as we transition deeper into personality, we tackle hair. Each feature plays an important role in developing the appearance of our person and propels us closer to meeting them face to face.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Whether you jumped into this step-by-step process or just watched it come together as the chapters progressed, what comes next calls for some hands-on work! We get into the motion of putting our techniques into practice over and over, beginning with one color. Identify some applicable steps for your newly-heightened face game—sketchbook practice, party invitations, editorial illustrations, repeat patterns, comic books . . . there are so many ways to grow your work! Painting faces is fun, but giving them a purpose is even better. Your newfound expertise will make you eager to put your skills to work— be it as a fulfilling practice or a professional venture. I want to give you a few ideas to get you rolling while we’re still together on this journey. My hope is that you not only discover that painting faces is attainable, but that it’s also a viable skill that can take on many different forms. You may even discover a new way of working that you never considered before.

I always find it easiest to begin with the front hairs, as they set the tone of the hairstyle. Ears can be covered or avoided to make the hair appear as tied or tucked behind. I chose to give this redhead a layered look since I had the liberty to do so with each wisp of the brush.

This book is all about drawing whimsical faces from your imagination. I like to think of our pencils and brushes as harboring crowds of imaginary people and creatures—all just waiting patiently to fall out and be drawn into existence, one by one.

There are absolutely no rules in art. Everything I present in my classes and in this book are simply my ideas. I believe drawing is theater. I base my artwork on reality and then heighten the elements that fascinate me until I arrive at my own style full of whimsical faces, colors, and forms. My greatest wish is for you to know the joy of drawing faces and to build your own style. And it’s such a privilege to help you do that. Just follow your curiosity, gather your courage, and bravely read on!

But I have a confession to make first: I am an art supply junkie. I love art supplies so much I created an online workshop all about them and I opened an art supply store. No one knows better than I, that with all that amazing choices, deciding what to use can be overwhelming—let alone deciding how to use it. In this chapter we take a closer look at the materials I use in my artwork.

Drawing The Basics

I have developed a process for my online workshops called 'Draw Happy.' It takes the familiar lament, 'I wish I could draw' out of people’s vocabulary and replaces it with the creative confidence to enjoy drawing! So, we’ll start there and then we’ll skip along several stepping stones that will have you drawing faces along with me by the end of the chapter. By understanding and practicing these concepts, you will build a lasting and beautiful foundation for creating faces.

Drawing The Details

Drawing is all about drama! You can emphasize the details you love, set your own rules, and create what pleases you. In my whimsical drawings I like to start with realistic features and then bend expectations. This results in playfully quirky, interesting, and fanciful faces. In this chapter, we look at my secrets and tips for constructing each of the facial features and hair!

In this chapter, I have fifteen fun-loving exercises for creating fanciful faces for you to enjoy. Each project is intended as a prompt to inspire you to grab your tools and get busy making art. All the drawing basics we have learned so far will be used with the glorious addition of color! Are you ready to paint and create?

Blue skying

What if there were absolutely NO limitations, time restraints, worries, or shortages of resources in any way? This is the brainstorming game we call 'Blue Skying'. Blue Skying is a marvelous way to grow your dreams. Take about fifteen minutes and a sketchbook and start to crack open lists of possibilities. Be as wild as you can on whatever topic gets you excited. What would your perfect art studio look like? Dream wide, dream tall, dream big! Your world is brimming with ways to make things happen for you and putting it down on paper is not only a great joy, but an important step in turning these things into reality.

Simple studio solutions - clip lights

A light source is important to help you see the forms of your flowers while painting and drawing. If your studio space doesn’t get natural light and a table lamp or a standing lamp won’t fit your needs, invest in a small clip lamp from the craft or hardware store. One of my favorite solutions, these types of lamps are lightweight and easy to position to illuminate your beautiful blooms.

Arranging blooms for drawing and painting

Use vases and vessels in different shapes and sizes. A vertical painting may be best done using a vertical vase. A decorative pattern on a pot may inspire your painting. Consider using a glass vase so that you can see the stems and the reflections of the water, as they make incredible design elements. I often have several fresh arrangements in my studio at one time. I glance at all of them, borrowing a few ideas from each if I need to fill in my painting. Abundance! Always.

Project: one simple sunflower

Start by toning your gessoed canvas with medium blue-gray. Next mix up a bright, light yellow for your light side, a middle-range darker yellow for your shadow side, and a dark for the center of your sunnie. Look for your brightest bright and put it in. Next, decide where your shadow side is and finally put in your darkest dark. Work fast, and don’t worry if it looks like a flower; your goal is to describe a form. When you stand back from your canvas, you will be able to see a sunflower. You can build on top with more nuance, line work, and brush work later, but getting the basic shorthand of shapes will keep you moving quickly and in the moment. Feel free to practice the three-color approach on some of your other favorite flowers.
