I did realize that was kind of dumb so compared the known weight of an object (weighed on another, calibrated one) to the weight shown on my scale and it was close enough for my purposes (like off by 0.1 or 0.01 (can't remember if there's two points after the decimal or not)). Though you can always calibrate w a nickel or other coin w a known weight of course. |

| Answer: | As long as you don't go over 1KG. It measures in Grams, Diamond Weight, Troy Ounces, Ounces, and karats I believe. I would rather have had the grain option but oh well. If you are looking for the scale with the grain option there is the same exact scale http://www.amazon.com/Hornady-Electronic-Scale-1500-Grains/dp/B001KZ7JLW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1399932622&sr=8-2&keywords=powder+scales but this one has the grain option. I use mine on a daily basis and have compared its accuracy to at least 5 other scales both mechanical and electric and it is always dead on. I have both scales and they are my favorite so far. American Weigh Scales has been around a long time and there is evident quality in the piece. So if you are measuring kitchen items such as rice; You put the container on the scale and press tear (this will zero the display and lock its calibration), you can then add your ingredients.
