Questions about Foam Rolling? Dummies can help.
Are rollers just for athletes?
Absolutely not. Rollers are used by children, grandparents, and everyone in between. Anyone who struggles with tight muscles, stiff joints, or general body tightness will love rollers. Learning to properly use rollers, roller balls, half rollers, and vibrating rollers will change the way you prepare your body for your busy day. When you master the art of rolling, you’ll have the ability to manage those unwelcome muscle aches and pains that keep trying to slow you down.
How do I know what type of roller is right for me?
There are many different types of rollers to choose from. That’s why I devoted an entire chapter in my book to help you find the perfect roller for you.
Here’s my game plan for anyone new to rollers: Start with a soft, round foam roller. It’s comfortable and easy to use. As you feel more comfortable with your foam roller, the next upgrade is a smaller diameter and harder roller. This will help you isolate smaller muscle “knots” or trigger points deeper inside your tight muscles and fascia. Lastly, for the veteran rollers, ramping up to a roller ball is the next step, only if necessary. A roller ball provides a deeper, more localized treatment and, initially, a bit more discomfort during the treatment.
Regardless of which roller you choose, the best roller is the one which helps you feel and move better.
I often struggle with tight muscles in my legs, low back, and shoulders. Will rollers help me?
Absolutely! Roller treatments are especially helpful to “unlock” tight muscles and fascia. When rollers are used properly, the muscles they unlock will feel looser and more “stretchy” in less than 10 minutes. It’s not magic but it sure feels like it!
Each roller treatment is focused on eliminating painful muscle knots commonly referred to as trigger points. When the roller or roller ball is placed over a trigger point with moderate pressure, the localized muscle tightness is “unlocked” and the muscle fibers happily relax. This why rollers work so quickly! In contrast, when those same painful muscle knots are stretched aggressively, they often become more irritable, and the entire muscle becomes tighter in an effort to protect itself.
Using Rollers for Workouts and Stretching
Rollers are great workout partners. Athletes at all levels of sports use foam rollers and half rollers to make their workouts more challenging and more fun.
Think about this way: Picture yourself performing simple exercises like body squats, pushups, or dumbbell curls. Now imagine yourself performing these same exercises while balancing on a long cylindrical roller. It’s much more challenging, wouldn’t you agree?
Maybe the strong athlete in you says, “That doesn’t sound too hard.” I like your spunk. Just for you, let’s raise the challenge by using two separate rollers placing each roller under each foot during your squats and under each hand during your pushups. Can you see how easily you can use your same muscle-treating rollers to quickly turn your living room into the perfect gym?
Don't forget about stretching your hard-working muscles. Rollers are effective tools to stabilize your trunk, arms, and legs while you effortlessly lengthen and relax all your major muscle groups.
Give Rolling a Try!
Ready to try foam rolling? Here's a common Roller Game Plan I use with most of my physical therapy patients:
- Warmup: Increase blood flow and temperature of muscles, tendons, and joints
- Roller Treatments: Unlock the muscles and fascia to prepare them for action
- Roller Workouts: Make the muscles strong, the joints loose, and the body limber
- Roller Stretches: Lengthen and relax the tired muscles and joints to preserve the benefits of a great workout

Welcome from
I have always been interested in massage therapy as a way to feel better and more connected with people, and I am thrilled to be able to share my knowledge of classic massage techniques with you in this book.
The magic of massage is that it can guide a body toward healing itself. It can help someone who is suffering to feel better throughout their healing process. Massage brings us back to ourselves, reminding us to listen and to breathe, to slow down and acknowledge pain and tension, and to take care of our bodies tenderly.
I grew up with scoliosis, and regularly experienced the frustration and stress of chronic pain. My earliest memory of massage is of my mother, a classically trained professional ballerina, working on my shoulder pain using kneading strokes, which gave me some much-needed relief. Later, I would go on to trade back rubs with friends and read every book I could find on the subject of massage.
I first studied massage formally in Thailand, becoming certified in Thai massage at the wat po school in Bangkok. I immediately realized the benefits and joy of working with my hands and with people.
I continued my education at the Swedish institute and became licensed as a massage therapist in New York, where I practice today. My studio combines a medically based massage practice with the relaxing environment of a healing space, and it is wonderful place to be: it's not with every job that you get to be the best part of someone's day, every day.

THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE
The benefits of massage are immeasurable, as they reach the physical body, mind, and spirit. As humans, the mind–body connection is extremely powerful. There’s no better way of accessing that connection than through physical touch, provided with dignity and respect. A better-feeling body leads to a better-feeling mind.
KNOTS
Our muscles are layered and oriented in many different directions. These layers cross each other at various angles. Think of some as parallel, running alongside each other, while others are perpendicular, running across each other. To complicate matters further, there are often several layers of muscles right on top of each other. From time to time at these crossings, rather than gliding past each other, muscles may become adhered or “stuck” to their surrounding structures, resulting in a crunchy, lumpy, hard, and painful spot that can feel tense and uncomfortable.
An adhesion can start to limit your range of motion, making it harder to move or stretch in a certain direction, which is often uncomfortable and painful.
What Causes Knots?
Muscles become adhered for all kinds of reasons, most commonly because of poor posture and sitting still for too long, or repetitive use. Circulation lubricates our muscles, bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients. Another contributing factor to adhesions is dehydration. Muscles are very spongy tissue, and need to stay well hydrated to perform at their best. Injuries can also contribute to adhesions.
When You Find a Knot
When you think you’ve found a knot, check in with the receiver and ask them how that spot feels. If it’s an area that they would like work done on, slowly sink your fingers in, making sure to check in regarding pressure. The receiver should feel relief at having pressure placed on an area with a knot: the effect should feel like “delicious” pain, not scary pain.
