User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone play 3 or 4 player? Is it lame or slow having to share decisions/actions |
Answer: | I played with 4 players and thought it was okay compared to two. It extended play time by an hour which is a lot with an already 3 hour game. |
Question: | How tall are the human miniatures |
Answer: | roughly 2/3 of an inch to an inch and 1/4 |
Question: | I noticed that a lot of War of the Ring fans are painting their miniatures themselves. Any advice on this or any good tutorials |
Answer: | Depends on how crazy you want to get with it. If you want to go super easy, you can get a minatures wash and paint that over the minis. Instant shading, popping of detail, little work, doesn't change the color. You could venture into something like the dip method, which is still super easy, but requires a bit more effort. The short of it is you paint some basic color on, not particularly well either, and then dip the mini in minwax, shake off the excess, and let it dry. That makes for OK coloring/shading, is really quick, and if you use minwax, that paint will last longer than all of us. If you want to get into some serious painting, which is rewarding if you like it but a serious time and money investment, the Games Workshop sponsored Warhammer TV has some great tutorials on how to do things like layering, shading, when to use washes, when to use glazes, and a lot of other stuff. There are a metric ton of videos, usually focusing on painting specific minis, so you'll have to wade a bit through it. You can also look up anything dealing with Golden Demon winners tutorials. You can likely find other tutorials, but Games Workshop is the elephant in the miniatures world, so focusing on them for tutorials is the likely fastest route to painting info. |
Question: | woud you let a ten-year-old play |
Answer: | I'd make it available for them to play if it's on your game shelf... but I wouldn't buy it specifically for a ten-year-old unless they had sought it out. I'd suggest BattleLore (second edition) which is much more playable and still allows imagination. A kid with a good imagination can make any pieces be who they want them to be (like LotR characters). BatteLore will be more playable at that step in the gaming journey. |

Epic Action Drama. Set in Japan during the 1870s, The Last Samurai tells the story of Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a respected American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the Emperor attempts to eradicate the ancient Imperial Samurai warriors in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly government policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his own sense of honor to guide him.

Additional Features
No actor works harder to open a movie than Tom Cruise. His enthusiasm is throughout the DVD extras as he mirrors his samurai character by constantly talking about "loyalty" and "discipline" while working on the film. However as a post-movie experience, the top-line extras with Cruise and director Edward Zwick are repetitive and underwhelming, with too many clips from the film we assume DVD viewers have just seen. The History Channel show is also a pre-release promotional device that misses an opportunity to really dig into this intriguing time period. Better are segments on the costumes, the production design, and how you put together an Imperial army--in New Zealand, no less. Zwick's low-key and dense commentary (plus a "Video Journal") is not vital, but he illustrates many of the little peculiarities it took to make the wide-ranging film come together. There are two deleted scenes; a samurai's first appearance is particularly memorable. --Doug Thomas
