12 best pi heatsink for raspberries
A Pi heatsink, in the context of Raspberry Pi single-board computers, is a passive cooling solution designed to dissipate heat generated by the Raspberry Pi's CPU and other components. Raspberry Pi boards can get warm during operation, especially when running resource-intensive tasks, and a heatsink is used to help maintain optimal operating temperatures. Here are some key points related to Pi heatsinks:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a Pi heatsink is to prevent the Raspberry Pi's CPU from overheating. When the CPU temperature rises beyond a certain threshold, the system may throttle its performance or shut down to prevent damage.
Design: Pi heatsinks are typically made of materials like aluminum or copper, which have good thermal conductivity. They feature a design with fins or ridges that increase the surface area for heat dissipation.
Installation: Installing a Pi heatsink is a straightforward process. It usually involves cleaning the CPU and other relevant components, applying thermal paste (a thermally conductive material), and attaching the heatsink to the designated area on the Raspberry Pi's board.
Passive Cooling: Heatsinks are considered passive cooling solutions because they do not require any external power source, such as a fan. Instead, they rely on the principles of conduction and convection to transfer heat away from the components.
Benefits: Using a heatsink can help maintain stable and consistent performance of the Raspberry Pi, especially in situations where it is subjected to heavy workloads or high ambient temperatures. It can extend the lifespan of the components by preventing overheating.
Compatibility: Heatsinks are available in various sizes and styles to fit different Raspberry Pi models. It's important to choose a heatsink that is compatible with your specific Raspberry Pi board.
Heat Dissipation: The effectiveness of a Pi heatsink depends on factors such as its size, material, and the quality of the thermal paste used. For more demanding applications or environments, additional cooling solutions like fans or active cooling cases may be necessary.
Availability: Pi heatsinks are widely available and can be purchased individually or as part of cooling kits that may include other accessories like fans and thermal pads.
In summary, a Pi heatsink is a valuable accessory for Raspberry Pi users who want to ensure the optimal thermal performance and longevity of their boards. By dissipating heat efficiently, heatsinks help prevent overheating-related issues and maintain the stability of the Raspberry Pi, making them a common choice for various engineering and DIY projects involving Raspberry Pi-based systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | How thick are the thermal pads? I think I'm going to replace them |
Answer: | The pads are not very thick. Maybe 1-2mm. |
Question: | How thick is the thermal tape? My pads ended up tearing... The stickers on the backside of the pad were so hard to take off it ruined my pads |
Answer: | I tore mine a little, it is more like molding putty than a pad, so i laid it down on the chip and brought the tear back together. I ended up using a box cutter blade to separate it from the backing. |
Question: | what temperature range does this extend the device to |
Answer: | This information regards only the cpu: Idles at around 40c, using synthetic stress test it maxes out at 50c, with overclocking to 1.75ghz it maxes out at 53c |
Question: | what are the dimensions of the fans |
Answer: | The fans are flush relative to the top of the heatsink. If you're trying to replace the fans, they're approx 1" square and 3/8" high. They are held in place by 4 machine screws (provided). I like the heatsink as it doubles as a case. With the Pi 4 you MUST use a heatsink, a fan is good. The postage stamp stick-on heatsinks that you could use on a Pi 3 are not sufficient to remove the heat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how many raspberry pi 3b+ units will this kit cover |
Answer: | Five. Three heatsinks per Pi. |
Question: | Will these work with dual vnh2sp30 stepper motor driver module monster moto shield |
Answer: | I haven't used that shield, so I can't say for sure. I have used them on a RPi with a Pi Sense HAT. |
Question: | How long will the adhesive on the tape last? Will it degrade in a few short years or last decades |
Answer: | I'm not sure, I've had them for a while, but not a year yet. Given that it is 3M 8810 (used in many heat conductive applications), I would expect them to stay stuck as long as I expect the Raspberry Pi to last. I think I will want to upgrade Pi before they come off. |
Question: | copper heat sink goes on top of Pi 4 processor? Aluminum fin heat sink on top of copper |
Answer: | On the pi4b the thin copper plate isn't used. You only use the three finned heatsinks for the three chips on top of the board. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the thermal contact block made of? Is it a thermal paste-safe metal |
Answer: | Aluminum with the copper pipes exposed in the middle. I'd suggest a thermal pad as the gap may be too wide for paste to adhere and make good contact. It comes with one but there are better ones out there. |
Question: | Does this fan run continuously or just above a certain CPU temperature |
Answer: | It runs continuously, but in all honesty, it's very quiet and not really noticeable...at least to me. It really does a great job at keeping the temp way down on my pi. |
Question: | Is there another way of powering the fan other than the gpio ? i need to use the gpio for another itemized |
Answer: | This is an old question but still think an answer is needed. You can use an external source. A usb hub or something similar. You can also use the Pi's usb port. Wiring the fan to a usb cable should be fairly easy. |
Question: | What is the height of the heatsink with fan installed |
Answer: | 38mm from the pcb to the top of the fan. |
