14 best leopard gecko tank

Creating an appropriate tank or enclosure for a leopard gecko is crucial to ensure their well-being. Here are some key considerations when setting up a leopard gecko tank:

  1. Tank Size:

    • Leopard geckos need adequate space to move around. A 20-gallon tank is often recommended for one or two geckos.
  2. Substrate:

    • Use a substrate that allows for burrowing and digging.Suitable substrates include reptile carpet, paper towels, or coconut coir.
  3. Hideouts:

    • Provide multiple hiding spots within the tank using caves or shelters. This helps the gecko feel secure and reduces stress.
  4. Heating:

    • Leopard geckos are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external heat sources. Use an under-tank heating pad to create a warm spot on one side of the tank.
  5. Temperature Gradient:

    • Maintain a temperature gradient in the tank. The warm side should be around 88-92°F (31-33°C), while the cooler side can be around 75-80°F (24-27°C).
  6. Lighting:

    • Leopard geckos do not require UVB lighting but do benefit from a regular light/dark cycle. Use a low-wattage incandescent bulb for daytime lighting.
  7. Feeding Dish:

    • Use shallow dishes for food to make it easy for the gecko to access and to prevent the substrate from contaminating the food.
  8. Water Bowl:

    • Provide a small, shallow water bowl for drinking. Ensure it is cleaned regularly to maintain hygiene.
  9. Decoration:

    • Add some decorations like rocks, branches, or artificial plants to create a more enriching environment. Ensure that these items are safe and won't harm the gecko.
  10. Cleaning and Maintenance:

    • Regularly clean the tank by removing uneaten food, feces, and shedding skin. Replace substrate as needed.
  11. Handling:

    • Handle your leopard gecko gently and infrequently to minimize stress. When handling, support their body properly and avoid grabbing the tail, as it may detach as a defense mechanism.
  12. Research and Learning:

    • Stay informed about leopard gecko care by reading reputable books and online resources. This helps you understand their specific needs and behaviors.

Remember, the needs of leopard geckos can vary, and it's essential to observe your pet to ensure it is healthy and thriving. Providing proper care, a suitable tank setup, and a balanced diet contribute to the overall well-being of your leopard gecko.

User questions & answers

Question: would this be a good basking spot for a red-eared slider
Answer: This is not designed to hold water. Please contact us at 1-888-255-4527 and we can offer assistance.
Question: Would this be good for a Savannah
Answer: It would be too small
Question: Will this work for a created geco
Answer: The size will for a juvenile up to about 6 months of age when it will need a larger habitat. That said, Geckos are tropical so the tropical starter kit would be a better choice
Question: would this be good for a bearded dragon
Answer: It would be fine for a small bearded dragon, but how big do they get? It's the standard glass aquarium you see for all small land and water animals. Ours is holding a baby snake, so we'll have to move up in size once it grows. Make sure you're distinguishing between the tropical model vs the desert model. The tropical one includes one heat lamp, with a daylight bulb, and an under-aquarium heat pad. There is no night/UVB bulb, or dome. The desert model includes two dome lamps with day and night bulbs, but no under-aquarium heat pad. So choose according to which items a bearded dragon needs most. The only other difference is the color of the bottom covering--one is sand colored and one is green.

Exo Terra Natural Terrarium - Advanced Reptile Habitat, Low 24" x 18" x 12"

The 3 new lower sizes are specially designed for desert set-ups, since most desert species are ground dwellers and do not move vertically. Although very similar in shape and size as the “aquarium-type” tanks, these new versions have all the great features of the typical Exo Terra terrarium. User questions & answers

Question: I don't want to use for an animal/insect so can the mesh be removed from the lid just leaving the screen to use as cover? Thanks
Answer: Yes, i have 1 i use just as a planted terarrium for cacti and i have the top removed so the plants can grow without hitting the top.
Question: will this terrarium work for a bearded dragon
Answer: No. Bearded Dragons grow very fast and a juvenile would outgrow any of these tank sizes within a year. I learned the hard way and had to buy a couple of tanks in the first year I got mine. A long 20 gallon terrarium accommodated her for maybe 6-8 months and after that I upgraded her to a 50 gallon. The basking rock, food dish and water dish (which they love) take up a lot of space too so that's something to consider also.
Question: Regarding the exo terra mini (Wide) what are the dimensions of the bottom underneath the door? Looking to make the bottom part a "tank
Answer: Roughly 4 - 4.5 inches
Question: Would this tank (12x12x12) be good for a baby corn snake? Or would the next size up be better
Answer: I would recommend the 18x18x18. Something I've been told is that your snake tank should be at least as long as your snake. He might be a baby now, but in another 6-12 months, the 12x12x12 is gonna be too small and you'll have to buy a new one.

REPTI ZOO Flat Packed Mini Glass Terrarium

Glass terrariums are the preferred choice of professional Herpetologists. They offer the best viewing for your animal; they are suitable for damp and humid conditions, are hygienic and easy to clean.Glass also maintains the correct heat gradient more safely and easily-maintaining the correct heat gradient is critical to a reptile’s and amphibian’s well-being as they use external heat sources in their environment to regulate their body temperatures.

In the wild these animals move around within their habitat (from sunlight to shade, or from above ground to burrows, for example) to regulate their body temperature. If they get too cool, their metabolism slows (and in conditions that are too hot or too cold, they enter states of inactivity or hibernation).

Maintaining the appropriate temperature is vital to bodily functions such as digestion. It is important to provide the proper temperature conditions in order for the animal to grow and thrive.

For many reptiles, it is not simply a matter of providing a constant temperature, however. They require a thermal gradient, or a range of temperatures from a high end to a low end. Thus, the animal can move to a higher temperature or lower temperature to suit its needs at any given time.

User questions & answers

Question: Would this be okay for a baby leopard gecko? I have read that baby geckos can get stressed out if the tank is too big
Answer: You'll hear that about a lot of animals. What stresses animals (ball pythons, baby geckos, betta fish, etc) out isn't the size of the enclosure, it's the open space. They feel exposed, because their instincts want them to avoid situations like that so predators won't get them. Just fill the space with hiding spots and climbing things and all that good stuff, and they'll be fine. The only other issue can be finding food in such a big space, but with baby animals, you generally want to tong-feed them or give them a bowl anyway. Don't just pour crickets in. You should probably go ahead and get the 24x18x12, though, that extra chunk of space is ideal.
Question: how many gallons is it
Answer: Approximately 16.8 gallons
Question: Can I use this for a male mouse
Answer: Don’t see why not! Plenty of space! But the rock background is styrofoam so I suggest taking it out if you’ll be housing a mouse in there.
Question: Can this be used for an adult leopard gecko
Answer: Yes there is plenty of room for an adult leopard gecko,

User questions & answers

Question: Is this going to be too small for an adult crested gecko
Answer: You really want your adults to be in a 20 gallon container, 11 gallons is fine through the juvenile stage, but not a long term solution. I have my 2 crested geckos in a 18x18x24 and it's big enough for them through adult stage at roughly 30 gallons.
Question: Is it a 20 or more gallon tank
Answer: It would be smaller than a 20 gallon. A 20 Gallon Zilla Critter Cage is 24 x 12 x 16 (LWH) and this is 12 x 12 x 18 so this is only slightly more than half of the cubic space
Question: I live in a cold environment is the light bulb a heat bulb
Answer: Yes, the light can be used as a heat bulb for a tank this size , however be careful with this perticular bulb as the bulb itself gets very hot and should only be used with the screen covering that comes with the tank
Question: How would this tank fare for ball pythons
Answer: It would not be fit for a ball python of any age.

User questions & answers

Question: Should I use the lights provided or just the under tank heater. Some people say to use and some say to use just under tank heater
Answer: I'm no expert but i use the heater on one side of the of the tank, literally on the side glass not actually under the tank. I don't like making the ground hot. The heater i have is on a timer but i turn it on if the climate is too cold at other times. I use the light to simulate day light mainly, also on the same side as the heat pad. I leave the other half shaded and cool. Don't take my word for it though, always research on forums!
Question: Does the light provide heat
Answer: No, the light doesn’t provide heat. Only the heat mat does
Question: Does this tank have a raised bottom
Answer: The tank comes with 4 small plastic “feet” that can be placed in the 4 corners of the tank to raise it
Question: Does it have doors on the front that open, or is access only on the top, like a fish aquarium
Answer: It only has access on top.

User questions & answers

Question: Soon to be new ball python owner! Got the 36 x 18. What light should I get with it
Answer: Hey Kristen, I have the 36x24 (my bp likes to climb), so you may be able to use one combo dome with higher watt bulbs or use two combo domes with lower watt bulbs. I use two "Zoo Med Mini Combo Deep Dome Lamp Fixtures" using 2 "Exo Terra Night-Glo Moonlight 75 Watt" and 2 "Exo Terra Daytime Heat Lamp 100 Watt". Because I'm out of the house most of the time, I use the "Zilla 11893 24/7 Digital Timer Power Center, 1875-Watt" to automatically switch between day lighting and night lighting. In order to make sure the terrarium doesn't get over heated in my absence I also use the "Zilla 11939 Temperature Controller, 1000-Watt" which cuts the lights off/on depending on temperature. I also keep moist towels on top of the cool side of the terrarium to keep the humidity up (heat lights dry up all the moisture otherwise). I know that's a lot more info then you were asking for, but I figured it might help. Also, be careful with the Exo Terra Terrarium when you open the doors. Make sure your snake isn't near where the door hinges or it might get lodged in the gap as mine did. Have fun... bp's make great pets! - Eric
Question: how many gallons is it
Answer: 33
Question: Is this a kit or just the tank
Answer: Just the tank with a foam background.
Question: Can the bottom glass be removed? Im looking to modulate this to an existing 40gallon feeder tank
Answer: No, not to my knowledge. I have 5 Exo terra tanks and it doesn't seem you can.
