User questions & answers

Question: When using the intercom function between two Sena helmets, do you have to touch the button each time you want to speak
Answer: Yes and No. When you first start a ride with someone else you sync the intercoms. From that point on you are both connected and can talk to each other without having to press any buttons. If one or both of you wants to listen to your music via your phone, you press a button and disconnect the intercom feature. When one of you wants to talk again you just push the button once to interrupt the music and talk to one another. Both of you don't have to push the button, just one rider can start the conversation and interrupt the other's music..
Question: does this come with a cloth case
Answer: Yes it does come with a helmet pouch
Question: Whats the difference between a bluetooth connection and a mesh connection
Answer: I will take a stab at it but you may want a second opinion. With Bluetooth, the signal goes from your unit to a second unit limited by the power of the Bluetooth. The range is very limited and probably only good for passenger intercom use and to connect to your phone, GPS, etc. With Mesh, the signal (not Bluetooth but radio waves) travels from your unit to a second unit and then using the power of the second unit your signal "leapfrogs" to the third unit which would be too far for your signal to reach on it's own. Unit two in said to function as a "repeater" like in HAM radio. So if your range is .5 miles, with four units you could now go 1.5 miles as long as the middle two units were turned on and functioning on the same channel. If you roll with 30 friends this would constitute a "mesh" of units all helping each other. It's a great theory but coming up with enough friends, with the same radios on the same day is not likely (at least for me). It's a great way for Sena to create brand loyalty...right? Keep in mind, if you use your phone/Bluetooth/helmet you can talk to any phone, on the other side of the world, hands free, from your helmet. I love mine just for the phone and music.
Question: Can you listen to music and will it pause for a walkie talkie conversation with another rider
Answer: Yes or no, depending on how you interpret it. To really understand, you need to stop thinking of it as a walkie talkie conversation. It's more like a phone call. With a walkie-talkie, you have to push a button to transmit, and while you're transmitting you can't hear the other person. With the Sena helmet, it's like being on a long phone call with the other helmet. You hear whatever the other person says when they say it and they hear whatever you say when you say it, even if you're both talking at the same time. There's nothing to push. Now you can tap a button to temporarily disconnect from the connection with the other person. Then you can tap again to reconnect. That feels more like putting the call on hold and then un-holding it, except that either person can un-hold it. So, yes, you can listen to music when the connection with the other helmet is paused, and when you or the other person tap to resume the connection the music pauses. In that sense, the answer to your question is yes, you can listen to music and it will pause. But in another sense the answer is no because with a walkie talkie when someone isn't speaking, there's no connection. With the Sena helmets, when both parties just aren't speaking, there's silence and the music won't play then, because the connection is still active. My girlfriend and I used the helmets on a 500 mile, week long bike ride (with 15,000 others) across Iowa this summer. We found that we liked just keeping the connection open most of the time. Sometimes we weren't talking and we couldn't listen to music then, but either of us could just start talking. It made conversation easy because it was like being in a car together in terms of ease of communication, even when we were a couple hundred feet apart. We only really broke off the connection if one of us was riding and talking with someone else. It was nice not to have to push a button and wait a second for the connection to start whenever we wanted to talk, but it meant that in the silences between speaking we couldn't listen to music. I hope that helps.
