I'm like you: I've been searching through Amazon and other sites, off-and-on for years now, but only as of late am I armed with a better understanding of what I'm looking at. When you see a list of ingredients on the nutrition label that shows 500 mg of L-ascorbic acid, ahead of 5 mg of acerola, citrus bioflavinoids, and other separate ingredients of plant orgin, that is NOT whole-food C. The C harvested from acerola or camu camu grown in iron-rich soil includes both iron and copper (tyrosinase) along with a few other things packaged in an ascorbic acid shell. Pure vitamin C, on the other hand, is just the ascorbic acid shell that was originally called hexuronic acid by Albert Szent Gyorgyi but was later renamed ascorbic acid given its powers against the scurvy (a scorbutus) induced in laboratory guinea pigs. Ascorbic acid by itself can cure scurvy and many other illnesses as contended by researchers like F. R. Klenner MD, Robert Cathcart MD, and Mathias Rath MD. But current research championed by Morley Robbins indicates that ascorbic acid in gram amounts will tend to disregulate copper from the protein ceruloplasmin, which is vitally important to iron mobilization.
