User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product have to be mixed with the color catalyst |
Answer: | It's very easy to mix. You just need to purchase the Aveda Full Spectrum Deposit only Treatment Activator. I suggest the liquid if you are doing an entire head, and the crème activator if you are doing hi-lites or low-lites. It only comes in a large bottle, though. And, it's not cheap. The mix ratio is 1:1 (the same amount of color from the tube, and same amount of activator). It's worth it |
Question: | How well does this product cover gray |
Answer: | This color covers grey beautifully. If your hair is completely white or blond and grey use with a 20 Volume developer. If your hair is very Dark and Grey you may need to use with a 30 volume developer and you may need to add warm o/y pigment or cool v/b Aveda pigment to the N natural/neutral. In Aveda color you may need to add pigments to achieve desired tone. Warm or Cool. I am a Licensed Cosmetologist and this product states for professional use only. I was excited to see it on Amazon because only Hair Stylists working at an Aveda Salon can purchase Aveda Hair Color. The Aveda Developer was very pricey and not sure it is the real deal. It had a seal on the top but it was not sealed to anything so it may have been altered. Anyway, it is fun to experiment. It is only hair and can be re colored. I would suggest going lighter if you are questioning color. It is always easier to go darker if needed. Aveda color looks darker when it is processing but color result will be lighter when washed. Hope this was helpful. Have Fun!! |
Question: | Will the 8N color over already dark colored hair and be as the sample color pictures |
Answer: | If your hair is dark, the color after using the color is usually a shade or 2 darker than the sample pictures. It also somewhat depends on how easily your hair accepts color. |
Question: | What # is this hair dye and how many OZ per tube |
Answer: | the number was 8N and it is a 2.2 ounce tube. I bought the developer and matched the ounces to 4.5 in the bottle |

User questions & answers
Question: | Any redheads (or former) out there using this? I'm thinking of trying the medium blonde |
Answer: | I am a light brown... only did the roots with 15 volume dev. Mixed 6n -7n equal parts. Color needs to be adjusted slightly to be a bit darker |
Question: | Do the color numbers correlate with traditional chemical dyes? i use 7.1 (ash blonde) l'oreal majirel. so is 7n the closest in color |
Answer: | 7n is neutral. No ash in the color |
Question: | What level is this |
Answer: | 7n |
Question: | Is anything else needed besides this bottle? Regular box dye comes with all sorts of (unwelcome) potions |
Answer: | You need to mix it with developer. Note, this color is intended for professional use. Developer is basically Hydrogen Peroxide that is mixed with the color in order to "activate" it. It comes in cream or liquid form, different levels (10, 20, 30 and 40 Volume) depending on what your goal is. If you're unfamiliar with all of this, perhaps drug store brands would be easier. You get everything you need in one box with instructions, all intended for use by the general public. Developer is not expensive, it comes in many sizes, a 4 oz bottle is around $2.50 at Sally's Beauty. You do not need to use the same brand developer as the color. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am looking to change brands of very dark brown hair dye, Is this aveda permanent hair color? What number do i get for very dark brown |
Answer: | This is aveda permanent hair color. The range goes from 1 to 10, 1N is black and 10N is blonde. 2N would be darkest brown and 3N dark brown. Please note that aveda colors must be mix with a developer/catalyst for the color to work. |
Question: | I'm considering 3N. Is it possible to mix with a 20 volume developer of a different brand, i.e. not Aveda |
Answer: | Yes, you may use a different companies developer. Use the developer number u would normally use. I use this REAL AVEDA with a different companies developer. End result is AWESOME!!! |
Question: | How do we know it is from Aveda and not a knockoff product |
Answer: | There is no such thing as "knockoff" Aveda. All Aveda sellers on Amazon have been approved by amazon to sell AVEDA, that process is very tedious and taken very seriously. The rest is irrelevant...there are lots and lots of other "professional only" products online...that is the beauty of shopping online...you can find everything! |
Question: | how many bottles do i need for a long hair |
Answer: | 2 will be enough |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi could you tell me which developer I would need for this hair color |
Answer: | I have my hair professionally colored once a month. I touch up my roots around my face after two weeks. I use what my stylist uses, equal parts Aveda full spectrum and Aveda 20 volume color catalyst. I leave it on my hair for 45 minutes and then shampoo it out. |
Question: | Does this need to be mixed with anything before putting on the hair |
Answer: | Yes--it needs to be mixed with developer in order to work. The color of your natural hair will determine the strength of developer you will need to get the lift you want. Standard developer is 20 volume; mix one part developer to one part hair color (leave on hair 30 minutes). If you need greater lift, go with a 30 or 40 volume developer and leave on hair 40 and 50 minutes respectively. If you hair is a dark brunette, you won't be able to get this light blonde result with hair color alone. |
Question: | Can you use a 40 developer |
Answer: | Will no cover gray Yes you can use it will give you 4 Levels of left |
Question: | Can you buy this independently of a stylist? I cannot seem to find the colors they sell. I went to Aveda's website |
Answer: | If you can purchase it on Amazon, it seems to me that the answer is obvious. I got my formula from my stylist to do touchups in between my monthly appointments. Not all colors are available on Amazon, but luckily mine is. |
