Answer:	Yes, they could stand on their own without a stand or support. The sides of the cradle are 1.5" deep. If you knocked into them, they'd tip over--but that's true of most picture frames or other stands for paintings. I use these for encaustic painting and I'm happy with the quality.

Answer:	I haven't used one yet, but they are two extra large emergency blankets taped together lengthwise with sturdy plastic tape. As such, they are undoubtedly waterproof other than water coming in at the open ends. I'm not impressed with the cording, but these are really for emergency use. If I was stranded in freezing temperatures, I would wrap myself in an emergency blanket and then climb inside this, as it is completely open on the ends.
