14 best boat gas cans
Boat gas cans, also known as fuel containers or fuel cans, are essential equipment for boaters who need to carry extra fuel for their vessels. These containers are specifically designed for the safe storage and transportation of gasoline or other fuels on boats. Here's what you should know about boat gas cans:
Material: Boat gas cans are typically made of durable, non-corrosive materials like high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or metal. HDPE cans are lightweight, resistant to rust and corrosion, and are less likely to leave residue in your fuel.
Capacity: Gas cans for boats come in various sizes, ranging from small 1-gallon cans to larger 5-gallon cans. The choice of capacity depends on the size of your boat's fuel tank and the distance you plan to travel.
Spout Design: Most boat gas cans feature a spout or nozzle for pouring fuel into your boat's tank. The spout design is essential, as it should allow for precise pouring without spillage. Some cans have a flexible spout, while others have a rigid design with a vent for smoother pouring.
Venting: Proper venting is crucial to prevent vapor buildup and pressure inside the can, especially in hot weather. Many gas cans have a built-in venting system or cap to release pressure and allow air to enter the can as fuel is dispensed.
Safety Features: Safety is a top priority when handling gasoline. Boat gas cans often include safety features like childproof caps and flame arrestors to prevent accidental spills and reduce the risk of fires or explosions.
Storage: When not in use, it's essential to store boat gas cans in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Proper storage helps preserve the quality of the fuel and prolong the life of the can.
Fuel Quality: Use only high-quality, ethanol-free gasoline in your boat gas cans. Ethanol-blended fuels can absorb moisture from the air, potentially leading to fuel contamination and engine problems.
Transportation: When transporting boat gas cans, ensure they are securely fastened and placed in a well-ventilated part of the boat away from passengers and open flames. Follow all safety regulations and guidelines for fuel transportation.
Labeling: It's important to label your gas cans clearly to indicate the type of fuel they contain (e.g., gasoline, diesel). This prevents mix-ups and ensures the right fuel is used in your boat's engine.
Regulations: Be aware of local, state, and federal regulations regarding the transportation and storage of gasoline. Compliance with these regulations is essential to ensure safety and avoid fines.
In summary, boat gas cans are vital for boaters who need to carry extra fuel for their vessels. These cans are designed with safety, durability, and convenience in mind, and they play a crucial role in ensuring a reliable fuel supply while on the water. Proper use and maintenance of boat gas cans are essential for safe and trouble-free boating experiences.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a power pump handle option |
Answer: | You could but why not just buy a standard can then. The point of the Boss is its push button, positive control, no spill spout. The press & pour works great! |
Question: | does this leak when layed down |
Answer: | DU!!! That is a dust cover, you must remove it first and place it on the black spout so you do not lose it!! |
Question: | Can you use this to pump or siphon fuel from another car so I can get fuel from our other car in times of emergency |
Answer: | 2+ means a bit more than 2 gallons. So if you do not let go of the gas handle at exactly the right time, you will probably not spill. |
Question: | How to operate it |
Answer: | It only holds two gallons. Why would anyone want to know the flow rate? |

Question: | I am thinking of ordering this tank, up the picture shows scepter while the description clearly says moeller. what exactly will i get if i order |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Is there a low-point drain on this tank, and is it approved for diesel fuel |
Answer: | We don't think that would be possible |
Question: | Are the dimensions stated on Amazon accurate? Roughly 23 x 14 x 14 inches |
Answer: | Stack them onto each other and strap them together like if you were strapping only one. They will not budge. One strap will do the job. Use the top tank first and then switch to the below one once the top one is empty so it doesn’t squire the one under. Work great. That’s what I do on my boat and work super well even on rough seas. Hope this helps. |

Question: | How many gallons is his tank? i.t doesn’t say i.t anywhere |
Answer: | There is a female threaded tap next to the fuel gauge. I purchased these two items, one fits in the female tap on the tank (Moeller Marine Fuel Tank NPT Connector (Force, 1/4", Male) and the other fits in the fuel hose that goes to the motor (Moeller Marine Fuel Line Engine and Tank Barb Conncector (Force, 3/8") , at least it did on my boat fuel line. |
Question: | What fitting will fit honda |
Answer: | The tank is manufactured by Scepter Manufacturer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If i use this for diesel, what do i need to do to then use it on a gas tank? how do i clean out |
Answer: | The Extech MO50 takes quick Moisture level reference measurements (in percent %) on wood and building materials. The measurement range for building materials is Low: 1.5% to 16.9%; Medium: 17% to 19.9%; High: 20 to 33%. If the expected moisture percentage of the paper is expected to fall at or above 1.5% then the MO50 Compact Pin Moisture Meter would work appropriately. |
Question: | We use a refrigerated tractor trailer for storage. Would this reach up to a tractor trailer tank? Would it fit that type of tank |
Answer: | Thank you so much for your interest in our products. The MO53 is able to detect moisture at 0.8''. For the application you mention, I believe you can be interested in a different meter. From FLIR, we can suggest the MR176 using the MR12 ball probe. That will help you to get almost 4'' depth in the material. |
Question: | The ad says "no more lifting." The directions say keep the supplying and receiving tanks at the same level. So what gives? Which is it |
Answer: | Expect you would have to push the meter probes through the paint layer to get a good reading. |
Question: | can this pump gas out of a car |
Answer: | It really only measures moisture that is within 1/2" of the surface. For example I have a leaky toilet in a bathroom and the subfloor is saturated with water. I have to push the prongs through the surface of the flooring until it reaches the wet subfloor, in order to get a reading. If you need something for reading deep within a wall, you will need an invasive meter which has really long prongs that can be fed through test holes that you drill into the affected area. If you want to test deep within areas such as several inches, the only way is through destructive inspection, pinless moisture meters, and in some cases infrared cameras. extech is one of the most trusted meter brands and I am very happy with my purchase. It works best for measuring the moisture content of wood specifically at the test location. If there was a flood and the surface appears dry but you have some suspension as to what's going on several inches into the wall cavity, this meter will not help. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the can marked (preferably by embossment) to indicate the "5 gallon" level |
Answer: | As far as I know there are no marks. The opening is tight so you really can't see inside anyway. There's a screen to prevent anything but gas from entering. I've never specifically measured but if you go to the gas station and put in exactly 5 gallons my guess is the gas will just reach the bottom of the screen which reaches down about 3 or 4 inches and that can be your mark |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | All Justrite safety cans are produced in our Mattoon, Illinois manufacturing facility. |
Question: | Is the 1" nozzle too large to dispense gasoline directly into an automobile? Or is it sized only to fit the larger opening on diesel cars/trucks |
Answer: | A standard unleaded gasoline nozzle is only 13/16". If the spout is anywhere near 1 inch, it will NOT fit into the hole to open the flapper. |
Question: | Does this can self vent when not pouring? I am looking for a gas can that can handle changes in altitude. It is hard to find 100% gas where I need it |
Answer: | This can has a sealed lid with automatic positive-pressure relief that vents between 3 and 5 psig (0.2 and 0.35 bar) to protect against explosion. |

Question: | How many gallons is the standard size tank |
Answer: | Attwood offers three different size tanks 3 gallon, 6 gallon and 12 gallon with the options with fuel gauge or without. |
Question: | How could i connect my honda eg2800 generator with this? also, if you need something else to connect to the honda generator, what is it |
Answer: | This a marine fuel tank and the connections are designed for boat engines. The Honda generator should have it’s own fuel tank. You may provably find some kind of connector to join the marine hose to your generator’s fuel line. Check your Honda manual to be sure that this procedure is approved and safe before you try. |
Question: | Can this be used as a replacement for the original plastic tank on Tohatsu outboards |
Answer: | Yes, Just make sure you can secure the tank down safely |
Question: | Old school mercury 80hp outboard with original metal tanks - is this a suitable replacement? We have the insert/tube style connection |
Answer: | the connections on top of the tank are a female thread. You may use any connector you wish. I chose to use a quick connector so I could remove the tank for fueling and mixing. I had a metal tank before, which I would prefer. Keep in mind that this tank is plastic and will swell when it gets warm. Otherwise, good tank thus far. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the dimensions of the tank, heigth is not important but must not be wider than 10 inches and 14 1/2 inches long |
Answer: | I'm using it with 2 different Johnson/Evinrude 4hp 2 stroke engines. Make sure that you have the correct fuel line fitting for the tank to fit your style fuel line (ex: Evinrude/Johnson). The fitting does NOT come with the tank. Must buy separately. Recommend OEM connector. Tank works well. Seems substantial. Mounting point for the fuel line connector does NOT stick out too far like on other tanks where it could get broken off. |
Question: | So is the handle on the top per the photo or on the side at checkout photo |
Answer: | 10.75 is the actual tank. 14.8 is the box it comes in |
Question: | is it made in USA |
Answer: | All Scepter marine tanks are designed with a 1/4" opening to hold a quick connect fitting (sold separately). The qfitting connection is based on the type of engine, in your case you would purchase a male Mercury quick connect fitting which would connect to the female quick connect that resides on the end of the Mercury fuel line. |
Question: | Will this gas tank work for a 1984 Johnson 2-cycle engine |
Answer: | The tank is a portable fuel tank rated for gasoline and ethanol. |

Equipped with Scepter's 2 way vented cap; this automatic air inflow valve system allows air to enter tank during operation and pressure to be released above 5 PSI.
Caution
Tank swelling will occur. EPA regulations have eliminated the traditional venting in these tanks. New portable outboard marine fuel tanks will not vent below 5 PSI with noticeable swelling. The new cap will cause the portable outboard marine fuel tanks to swell. The swelling is a result of the fuel vapor building pressure because the cap must stay sealed up to 5 PSI. The new tanks will remain sealed and safe at these pressures even when swelling is visible.
