9 best electronic brake controls
Electronic brake controls, also known as brake controllers, are essential components of a vehicle's brake system, particularly in towing situations. These devices play a critical role in ensuring safe and effective braking when towing trailers or heavy loads. Here are some key points about electronic brake controls:
Purpose: Electronic brake controls are used to manage and regulate the braking force applied to a trailer or caravan when towing. They help maintain control and stability by ensuring that the trailer's brakes engage in proportion to the vehicle's brakes.
Trailer Brake Activation: These controls activate the trailer's brakes when the driver applies the brakes in the towing vehicle. This synchronization ensures that both the towing vehicle and the trailer decelerate together, reducing the risk of trailer sway and maintaining control.
Proportional vs. Time-Delay Brake Controllers: There are two main types of electronic brake controllers: proportional and time-delay. Proportional controllers offer a smoother and more responsive braking experience by adjusting the trailer brake force in proportion to the towing vehicle's deceleration. Time-delay controllers apply a preset amount of braking force after a delay, regardless of the towing vehicle's braking intensity.
Installation: Electronic brake controls require installation in the towing vehicle. This typically involves connecting the controller to the vehicle's electrical system, including the brake pedal switch and wiring harness, and mounting the controller in a convenient location for the driver.
Adjustability: Most brake controllers are adjustable, allowing the driver to fine-tune the level of trailer brake force to suit the load and driving conditions. This adjustability ensures optimal braking performance.
Display and Controls: Brake controllers often feature an interface with a display screen and controls that allow the driver to monitor and adjust brake settings while on the road.
Compatibility: It's crucial to choose a brake controller that is compatible with both the towing vehicle and the trailer's braking system. Different trailers may require specific types of controllers.
Safety: Electronic brake controls significantly enhance towing safety by helping to prevent dangerous situations such as trailer sway or jackknifing. Properly adjusted controllers can also reduce stopping distances when towing heavy loads.
Legal Requirements: In many regions, electronic brake controllers are required by law when towing trailers above a certain weight threshold. Compliance with these regulations is essential for road safety and avoiding legal issues.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance and testing of electronic brake controllers are essential to ensure they function correctly. This includes checking connections, brake wiring, and controller settings.
In summary, electronic brake controls are crucial components for safely towing trailers and heavy loads. They help maintain control, improve stopping performance, and reduce the risk of accidents during towing. Choosing the right type of brake controller and ensuring proper installation and maintenance are essential for safe and effective towing.

Question: | Does this fit a 2013 ram 3500 slt |
Answer: | The CURT applies trailer brakes in accordance with vehicle deceleration. Built in accelerometers sense deceleration and apply trailer brakes according to the amount of deceleration. Small speed changes, letting off the gas etc, may not be enough to actuate trailer brakes. I have used cruise control, normal, with no interference or tugging from trailer brakes as speed is increased and decreased by the cruise control. This is based on my use experience only. |
Question: | According to the wiring diagrams the controller is powered directly from the battery. Is the unit then powered all the time |
Answer: | You would need to run a 12 volt 30-40 amp fused auxillary feed and a 30-40 amp ground line to the 7pin. |
