14 best insulation materials
Insulation materials play a crucial role in automotive applications by helping to regulate temperature, reduce noise, and enhance overall comfort and efficiency. These materials are used in various parts of a vehicle, particularly in the body and interior. Here's what you need to know about insulation materials in the context of automotive:
Sound Insulation: Automotive insulation materials are often used to dampen and reduce noise from the engine, road, and external environment. They help create a quieter cabin, improving the overall driving experience.
Thermal Insulation: Insulation materials in vehicles help regulate temperature by preventing heat from escaping in cold weather and keeping heat out in hot weather. This contributes to a more comfortable interior environment and energy efficiency.
Types of Insulation Materials:
- Acoustic Insulation: These materials, such as foams, barriers, and composites, are designed to absorb sound and reduce noise transmission.
- Thermal Insulation: These materials, like heat shields, foils, and thermal liners, are used to manage heat and maintain comfortable cabin temperatures.
- Vibration Dampening: Some insulation materials also serve to reduce vibrations and rattling in the vehicle, enhancing ride quality.
Placement: Insulation materials are strategically placed throughout the vehicle, including the firewall, floor, roof, doors, and wheel wells, to target specific noise and temperature control needs.
Materials Used:
- Foam: Closed-cell foam is commonly used for its lightweight and sound-absorbing properties.
- Mass-Loaded Vinyl (MLV): MLV sheets add mass and help block sound transmission.
- Thermal Barrier Foils: Reflective foils can be used to create a heat barrier.
- Spray-On Insulation: Some vehicles use spray-on insulation in hard-to-reach areas to improve insulation.
Installation and Replacement: In the automotive aftermarket, it's possible to upgrade or replace insulation materials to enhance a vehicle's insulation properties or to repair damaged insulation.
Benefits: Effective insulation materials not only improve comfort and reduce noise but also contribute to fuel efficiency by reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling.
Safety: Some insulation materials may have fire-resistant properties to enhance passenger safety in the event of a fire.
Maintenance: It's important to inspect and maintain insulation materials in a vehicle to ensure they remain effective over time. Damaged or deteriorating insulation should be replaced.
In summary, insulation materials are essential components in automotive design and maintenance, providing noise reduction, temperature control, and comfort for vehicle occupants. Proper insulation can greatly enhance the overall driving experience and efficiency of a vehicle.

User questions & answers
Question: | Temperature rating |
Answer: | According to the manufacturer's web site -60 to 180 Fahrenheit. |
Question: | would this be good for a well house insulator? if not what would b good |
Answer: | I would say no. This is for small things that don't need much insulation. I would say a board type insulation like Tyvec would be a better choice for a well house. |
Question: | I want to make custom fit side window covers for may car. Do the edges need to be sealed/wrapped with tape to keep from ripping/fraying/etc |
Answer: | I would say that is not necessary. The material is stromg and does not tear easily. However, I made tabs from blue 3M masking tape to make it easier to remove the Reflectix window cover from the windows. If you should happen to cut your cover a bit small making a tape edging solves that problem. Check out YouTube for some good ideas on using Reflectix for window coverings...lots of good pointers. |
Question: | Would this help keep heat out if put on inside of windows (AZ |
Answer: | You bet! That's what I did with it. I measured windows inside the van, cut the material out about 1/2-3/4" larger than the window size, top and bottom, then just push it into the window and smooth it into shape in the area. Trimmed little bits until it fits snugly. Then I wrote on each piece with marker pen to denote which window it goes in. You can easily take them out for driving, and then put them back when you are storing or parking in the sun. It covered the two back door and two side door and two overhead windows in overcab area. Would need larger size if you have more windows. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to use it under the headliner of the car. should i use some adhesive to apply this product kilmat to the ceiling? it would go a headlined over |
Answer: | Kilmat 50 mil material is self adhesive, there is no need for additional adhesive to be applied to install it to the roof of a car, It's important to clean, dry and degrease a metal surface prior to installation of Kilmat 50 mil to it. Make sure to thoroughly press it down to the metal surface with a roller until the special embossment on the foil is plain and smooth. |
Question: | What is R valuer |
Answer: | i'm no expert. I would venture to say between 5 and 8 R value |
Question: | What's the R value |
Answer: | Yeah almost nothing. Found out the hard way. I saw peoole saying it's used for thermal insulation also. Did most of my van with other stuff there rely good but decided to giveth the last 20 percent worth this. And when I step on it like steering in the metal. No difference. |
Question: | For application to underside of car hood, should I also use a spray adhesive |
Answer: | There should not be a problem adhering Kilmat 50 mil to the underside of the hood without using additional spray adhesive, thus we do not recommend any additional spray adhesives. Make sure to clean and degrease the surface prior to installation. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many fleece liners could i make out of what comes in 1 pack of this |
Answer: | Its super thin and I think it's 1 sheet... (could have been 2 , can't remember, was a while back - check the product details!!) not sure what you're looking for but I was using for soundproofing and was a disappointment. It's a tiny thin sheet of denim. The "1 inch" thickness is more like a 1/4 inch. Better to buy foam at a foam shop. I've had bad luck on Amazon with foam/denim products. |
Question: | Does this smell |
Answer: | No odor at all |
Question: | Could I use this as an eco filler for a quilt ? Is it purely shredded denim or has it been pre treated with any chemicals |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | What is the R value |
Answer: | It says the R value is 4 on the package which means resistance to heat flow. The higher the R value, the greater the insulating power. Thats all I can find. I dont know if that number is higher or lower. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How thick is the material |
Answer: | Once peeled and pasted, it is maybe the thickness of say, an average envelope with one single letter size paper folded in 3 inside, give or take. It isn't very thick but it seems to do the job and even pasted upside down (in my case on the outside bottom of my saddlebag an inch over my exhaust pipe) it holds very nicely. Mine has been there for now six months and 5,000 miles with a few biblical rain storms. Good stuff. |
Question: | Can this be used to cover a hot air heating vent? I want to prevent the hot air from entering into rooms |
Answer: | by itself I would think the adhesive side wouldn't last too long against the air flow. Now if you paste it on some board that you then screw on top of the vent, I don't see why not. Just a guess for what that's worth. |
Question: | Can I use this to wrap a leaking muffler |
Answer: | No. Muffler has comes out at pressure. Look at the products website and it well tell you for sure. If it doesn't say you can't, it doesn't mean you can |
Question: | Has anyone actually wrapped (direct contact) this product around an exhaust header? If so, your experience & assessment would be much appreciated. thx |
Answer: | I doubt if there is any product made to wrap around headers for the purpose of keeping heat from other products. You want your headers to dissapate heat. If you have rubber control arms or your tubes are so close to metal, stater etc that they execessively heat then you buy protection for that. You protect ancillary parts against the heat of your headers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | For the seller: Would this work in my transmission tunnel (old matting has fallen off)? If you do not know, please don't answer |
Answer: | I did not stick mine directly to the wall. I used and adhesive from Lowes called "Power Grab" and stuck mine to a sandwich of two acoustic insulation boards with sound blocking vinyl in between. (Many thanks to the company that showed their product in a cut away view) then I glued the BXI panels to that. My panels are 1 foot by 4 feet and are arranged in two colors green on top and white on the bottom. Good luck on your project! |
Question: | Are there chemical additives to the Polyethylene to make it flame retardant? If so, what are they |
Answer: | They do not work to block traffic noise on windows. I purchased this product, did not change the noise level at the window next to my desk. |
Question: | How long? How wide |
Answer: | Not unless you covered the entire wall with them |
Question: | so just to confirm. I can use this for the hood of my car |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the abrasion resistance of this material to be used in a trunk space |
Answer: | This material is just foam with adhesive backing. It needs something on top of it to protect it. Typically you would put mass loaded vinyl on top of it as part of a butyl, foam, vinyl sandwich for the best sound deadening and resonance control. You can also just put carpet over it. |
Question: | What is the max temp rating for this product? What could I use to insulate up to 900*F |
Answer: | Noico RED 150 mil temperature limits are from -49 degrees F to +190 degrees Fahrenheit. In your situation, you need to use special materials designed for 900-3000 degrees F. We're sorry, but we do not carry such type of materials. |
Question: | Can i use this on the hood of my 82 wagoneer |
Answer: | DEI has hood liners. I have their silver one which is working great and hasn't peeled off in the 6 months I've had it on. And it cut down on engine noise a lot. It's only like $60 on amazon last I checked. Their black version is newer. |
Question: | So this is a secondary layer to work together with kilmat or something? And would it place on top of it or on the other side |
Answer: | If you want to use Noico Red 150 mil material in combination with butyl based sound deadening material, then the installation plan will be as follows: 1 layer: butyl based sound deadening material with thickness around 80 mil installed on pre-cleaned and degreased metal surface of a vehicle; thoroughly pressed down to the metal surface with a roller 2nd layer: Noico Red 150 mil installed on top of the layer of butyl based material Please note, all sound deadening materials are to be installed only from the interior side. |

Answer: | I am not using Cooler Master, but corsair H110 (also 280mm cooler). It fits on the top, except one problem: Water pipe clearance is small and I decided to move DVD drive to external one.
