This is a terrific beginner microscope for kids and young adults. With 3 objective lenses, and 2 eyepieces, you can use 5 magnification levels from 40X to 1000X. The magnification range is ideal for viewing microscopic organisms, like what you might find in water samples from a lake or ocean. It's also great for looking at crystal structures and metallurgical samples. The top and bottom LED illumination provide light for both translucent and opaque objects. This means you can look at ultra-thin tissue samples, or plant leaves and insects. And since the microscope is battery-powered, you can take it anywhere.
The easy-to-use controls guarantee that anyone can get the hang of using the microscope in no time. The 3-lens turret can switch between the 4X, 10X, and 40X objective lenses by simply rotating. The specimen-stage has two clips to hold a slide or other object in place, while focus is adjusted by turning the large knob on either side of the microscope. A switch on the back will select the top light for opaque objects, or bottom light for translucent ones. An aperture wheel under the stage can be rotated to change the focus of the bottom light, which can increase or decrease the detail in the specimen.
This kit includes 5 prepared slides, as well as a collection of tools for making your own slides. There's a Petri dish for holding liquid samples, and 5 blank slides and cover slips for mounting thin-section specimens, like tissues. There's an easy-to-use microtome for slicing specimens, and red and blue stains to improve contrast in highly-translucent specimens. A vial, stirring rod, and pipette will help prepare wet-mount slides. And, of course, there are tweezers to help with the more-delicate subjects.

Search Amazon for B004XDC0A8 to find some Keeper yellow mini bungee cords, if that would work for you. Just make sure to connect them in a way that won't shoot your eye out if the cord broke or came undone... |

| Answer: | Purchased May 2017: I made the mistake of assuming this had a camera with USB computer because of the product description. In my opinion it is very misleading. You're only getting a microscope, 1 extra eye piece, and an AC adapter. No other cables or slides included. |

| Answer: | The field on this microscope in bottom lit. So you can see anything that the light can shine through. It will also illuminate small insects, their wings, legs etc. Quite alot of the body of the insects are translucent, so you can see inside the bodies etc. I have also looked at blood samples (my own) and it shows the blood cells, and white cells and other scary little critters swimming around in there. I had a microsocpe i gave to my grandaughter that also had a light that shinned from above. This would be nice to have on this one, but does not. with a top light you could look at objects that the light will not shine through. I especially like the camera/computer hookup. I hook it to a 32 inch tv and it gives a great picture of the object and you can take moving videos of little critters, like in pond water, or even small blood samples. the camera and software came with the scope i bought. this scope has four lenses. i use the lowest and next highest the most. that is the .4 and the 10 (which are then magnified by the optical by which ever lens you put in. this scope came with two options. The third lens is a 40, i have a little trouble focusing with this one, you have to get really close to the object, so make sure you use a cover on the slide over the object so you don't get stuff on the lens. And the fourth lens is oil emersion, a small bottle of oil comes with the scope. I think if i where doing it again i would try to find one that is both bottom and top lit. Not sure how that effects the price. Over all very happy with the quality of the scope, I would give it a 9.5 on a scale of 10. Have fun. |

| Answer: | No, you cannot use this microscope to view gemstones, or any solid object (at least not in a way that will be useful). There are two main types of microscope - compound, and stereo. A compound microscope, like the AmScope B120C-E1, is designed to look at translucent samples - drops of pond water, thin slices of tissue, and so on. Light is shined up through the sample and into the eyepiece, allowing you to see the cells/organisms in the sample. For viewing solid objects, you need a stereo microscope such as the AmScope SE400 (http://www.amazon.com/AmScope-SE400-Z-Widefield-Inspection-Microscope/dp/B005C75IVM). These microscopes are more like magnifying glasses on steroids, and use reflected light to illuminate the top of whatever you're viewing. If you want to examine gems, coins, circuit boards, insects, etc., go with a stereo microscope. Note that a "binocular" microscope just means the 'scope has two eyepieces - it does not imply "stereo" or "compound". |
