10 best automotive wheel bearing greases
Automotive wheel bearing greases are specialized lubricants designed for use in wheel bearings, which are critical components of a vehicle's suspension and steering system. These greases are formulated to provide long-lasting lubrication and protection for wheel bearings, ensuring smooth and reliable operation. Here are some key points about automotive wheel bearing greases:
Purpose: The primary purpose of wheel bearing grease is to reduce friction and wear in wheel bearings. This helps extend the life of the bearings and ensures proper wheel movement.
Composition: Automotive wheel bearing greases are typically made from a base oil and a thickening agent, along with various additives. The base oil can be mineral oil, synthetic oil, or a combination of both, depending on the formulation. The thickening agent gives the grease its consistency, allowing it to stay in place and provide lubrication over time. Additives are included to enhance performance, such as anti-wear agents, corrosion inhibitors, and extreme pressure additives.
High-Temperature Tolerance: Wheel bearings can generate significant heat, especially during long drives or under heavy loads. Automotive wheel bearing greases are formulated to withstand high temperatures without breaking down or losing their lubricating properties. This is critical for preventing bearing failure.
Water Resistance: Wheel bearing greases must also be highly resistant to water and moisture. Bearings are often exposed to wet conditions, and water ingress can lead to corrosion and premature wear. Water-resistant greases help protect the bearings from these issues.
Compatibility: It's essential to use a wheel bearing grease that is compatible with the type of wheel bearings in your vehicle. Some vehicles have sealed, pre-lubricated wheel bearings that do not require additional grease. Others have serviceable wheel bearings that need periodic greasing.Always consult your vehicle's manual or a trusted mechanic for guidance on the type of grease to use.
Application: When servicing wheel bearings, the old grease should be thoroughly cleaned out before applying new grease. The new grease is typically packed into the bearing or applied using a grease gun. Overfilling should be avoided, as it can lead to excess heat generation and leakage.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of wheel bearings is essential to ensure their longevity and reliability. Service intervals for greasing may vary depending on your vehicle's make and model, so consult your owner's manual or a professional mechanic for guidance.
Sealed vs. Unsealed Bearings: Some vehicles have sealed wheel bearings that are pre-lubricated for life and do not require additional greasing. In contrast, others have unsealed bearings that need periodic greasing. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
In summary, automotive wheel bearing greases are specially formulated lubricants designed to protect wheel bearings from friction, heat, moisture, and wear. Proper application and maintenance of these greases are essential for the safety and performance of your vehicle's wheels and suspension system.

Question: | is it silicon free |
Answer: | I see no indication that there is any silicone in this grease. Not sure why there would be silicone in any bearing grease, but for sure no silicone in this product. |
Question: | made in usa |
Answer: | The container does not specifically give country of manufacture, but I doubt with a Timken product of this quality it does not matter. I really think it is made in the USA, but nothing says it isn’t or is. The address in Ohio is on the can and also a phone number-234-262-3000. Maybe calling them would shed light on this question. |
Question: | Does anyone know the difference between this and the allstar all78241 timken brand premium red type wheel bearing grease? can they be used together |
Answer: | I bought the Allstar 78241 and I got the GR224TUB shrink wrapped with a Allstar performance label. I think it’s the same thing. |
Question: | Would this be No. 0 grade |
Answer: | No, it's closer to number 2 grease. It's thicker than #0 so it stays in the bearing without slinging out. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what can i use to remove this grease from the bearings of a machine which requires a food-grade product |
Answer: | hey there. we use the grease in differentials on our motorcycle trikes ytrikes. if you have a food grade product machinery, try removing the grease with a citrus based cleaner. these are non toxic and will cut the grease. replace the grease with any fda food rated product such as dow corning molycoat |
Question: | Does this work well in cold temps? What to use on fish house trailer |
Answer: | I use this in my excavator 30 miles north of Nome Alaska the average temp. in the summer is 53 F goes down to -29 in winter |
Question: | Can am atv suspension |
Answer: | If a Can Am has grease zerks then yes you can use it. This a decent high pressure grease. My only fault is it bleeds red oil out of your grease gun all over the place. So you will need to store your grease gun in a plastic bag and be prepared to wipe it down every time you need to use it. |
Question: | Will this work on garage door components (track, etc) or should I use white lithium grease? Also, what is the differerence between this and WLG |
Answer: | This product can be considered a "red lithium grease". For your application, it would just be a color difference. However, I don't think grease would be good for garage door tracks because it would attract and hold grit, dust, dirt, etc. Grease would be OK for bearings, but for tracks and wheels a teflon, silicone, or waxy spray would be better, and not as likely to attract dirt. |
