13 best dewalt thickness planer
DeWalt thickness planers are power tools used in woodworking to achieve precise thickness on wooden boards and panels. They are part of the Power Tool Parts & Accessories category and fall under Power Hand Tools, commonly used in home improvement projects.
A DeWalt thickness planer typically features a powerful motor that drives the cutting blades. These blades are adjustable, allowing users to select the desired thickness for the wood they are working on. The planer effectively shaves off excess material, providing a smooth and consistent thickness across the entire surface of the wood.
DeWalt thickness planers are known for their durability, efficiency, and precision. They often come with advanced features such as depth scales, material removal gauges, and infeed/outfeed tables to support long or wide workpieces. The infeed and outfeed tables help maintain a steady feed of the wood through the planer, resulting in a uniform thickness.
Some DeWalt thickness planers also have a fan-assisted chip ejection system to efficiently remove debris and maintain a clean working area. The planers usually have a sturdy construction to withstand the demands of professional woodworking applications.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this machine the same as the 735 w/o the extra blades and infeed and outfeed tables |
Answer: | Yes it is the same as the standard 735. As to the ware on the blades - I've planed over 300bf in the 6 years that I've had this unit. I missed a label staple on the end of a board and now have a 1/32nd hairline strip that shows and I easily clean up with a scraper. I also purchased an extra set of HSS (high speed steel) knives and put the money out ($158 for the set) for carbide edged which I only use on the last phase of the construction. I've got an older 13" planer that I use strictly for rough plane jobs and paint and varnish removal when I recycle older woodwork. |
Question: | How much thickness does this take, when used just for finishing? i have ok smooth oak in 13/16", would like it ++smooth but can't give more than |
Answer: | You can take as little or as much off as you want. It is measurable down to about 1/64" but if there is any cupping or warping within the board that may vary a bit. I would recommend a random orbital sander going up to 320 grit to get a ++smooth surface |
Question: | How easy is it to change blades on this planer? Thanks |
Answer: | Easy, about 10-15 minutes: 1) Remove four 5/32nds" headed screws to remove the top yellow cowling. 2) Remove 3 red thumbscrews to remove the black dust shroud - clean out any blocked wood chips. 3) Remove eight 5/32nds" headed screws on each of the three blades. 4) Flip the blades, or sharpen if they've already been flipped. 5) Reassemble in the reverse order. If using a power drill with a 5/32nd inch allen wrench head (e.g., https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VH7ZQGC or something similar), set the drill on medium torque and it will take about 10 minutes. (If you manually unscrew the screws using the T handled allen wrench it will take twice as long.) If careful (having heard of the others stories), it doesn't seem hard to to remove/replace the screws with enough torque to seat them properly, but not so hard that they get struck. I'm planing very hard madrone wood, and the blades have lasted about 150-200 lineal feet of wood that is about a foot wide before needing replacing. Use the #1 (slow) feed speed for hard woods - I didn't know about this until reading the manual... |
Question: | Does this planer have a 2.5" or 4" dust ejector port? Thanks |
Answer: | It has a 2.5" port with a 4" adapter. Follow the useful advice from the other folks, use the 4" adapter with a 4" hose/duct. Cheers 🥃 |

The DEWALT DW735 features a three-knife cutterhead and a powerful 15 amp motor that delivers 10,000 rpm. It offers quick, accurate depth adjustment and the convenience of knives that are both reversible and disposable. This fully featured portable planer makes it easy to create clean custom stock.
Powerful 15 Amp Motor for Clean CutsBenchtop planers are a long-term investment that allow you to save money over time by buying rough stock and dimensioning it yourself. They also make creating custom materials easier, which, in turn, makes getting great results easier.
The DW735 13-Inch Planer's powerful 15 amp motor can handle deep cuts in tough hardwoods. Its three-knife cutterhead and two-speed gearbox deliver 96 or 179 cuts per inch (cpi). Use 96 cpi when dimensioning material and 179 cpi for a finer finish.
Reversible, Disposable Knives for Convenience
The DEWALT DW734 uses razor sharp knives that are reversible and disposable. These knives last 30 percent longer than traditional disposable knives, helping you avoid costly and time-consuming resharpening.
For fast, easy, one-tool knife changes, a set of pins machined on the cutter-head goes through holes machined on the knife. This helps you quickly locate the fresh knife and refasten the knife clamp.
Large Capacity and Easy, Accurate Depth Adjustment
This planer's extra-long infeed and outfeed tables provide 33-1/2 inches of material support. A turret depth stop saves you time when setting the machine at commonly used depths.
In addition, the planer's material-removal gauge and extra-large thickness scale help ensure every pass is accurate. A four-column carriage lock drastically reduces the movement that causes material damage, or snipe, when planning near the end of a board.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried planning off paint on cedar with this machine? I have hundreds of feet to recycle |
Answer: | yes. I've removed paint and finish with this.. not on cedar, but on mahogany and oak. However, do keep in mind that this will greatly impact the working life of the blades. But that's a small price to pay for such convenience. I say go for it. You'll love the result and it sure beats sanding or scraping with a card scraper. |
Question: | Can the in-feed and out-feed rollers or carriage lock be adjusted to reduce snipe |
Answer: | Make the last or final pass a very minimul cut depth ie. 1/64. This helps with snipe. The bigger the cut, the more snipe you will get. Make sure the material is support flat against the table as it begins the cut, and on the exit table as well. The pressure rollers tend to make the board 'tip' as it enters and exits (this is typical in any planer, even the big industrial ones found in mill houses). As far as waxing the tables, i much prefer to use a table top silicon type lube usually sold in spray cans at your local wood supply. These leave a non build moisture resistant film that will not only make the table very slick, but leave no waxy residue that can transfer to your lumber and cause finishing issues. Wax that transfers to your lumber can act as a release agent when applying typical lacquer base or poly type finishes. Last but not least, some snipe is considered acceptable from any planer. It's just the way it is. Always start with a board thats a few inches longer than finish length and plan on cutting off the ends. These little planers are better than most, but you can never plan on not haveing some snipe. |
Question: | My first project with this will be planing 8"-10" wide Jatoba planks. How many linear feet can I expect to get out of one set of knives |
Answer: | i really can not tell you , i still running my first set of knives and i have ran many hundred of feet thru , and they still run great we run oak, pine ,maple ,ash, walnut, beech , lot of oak &ash |
Question: | are you happy with this purchase? or do you wish you got the 13" model with 2 speeds for $150 more |
Answer: | I'm a hobbyist and have had the DW734 for about a year now. Most of my planning had been hardwoods, Maple, Cherry, Walnut and some Purple Heart. None of them have had complicated figure. The widest board I've run through the machine was about a 9" glue up. I've gotten very good results and virtually no tear out. For my purposes an extra 1/2" in width and 2 speeds wouldn't make any difference in my projects. For me, this was a great buy. Depending on your needs, your results may var :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the current model that is shipping type 1 or type 20. If you look up the parts diagram the type 20 has a different slide mechanism part number |
Answer: | I bought a new one today from a lumberyard and it is a Type 1. (says right on the sticker on the motor) Not sure if that means the slide mechanism is better or worse than the Type 20. I would assume it was made in 2014 because there is a "Dewalt use only" tag on the box which starts with 2014. Not sure if a "fresher" saw is a Type 20 |
Question: | Can xps be added, i know dewalt makes a kit to add it to some saws, but this model was not listed |
Answer: | mmToolparts actually sells a kit (3 proprietary DeWalt parts + their wiring harness) for less than $70. They have videos on their website that show how to install the parts on DW716, DWS779, and DWS782 saws. You will need some additional tools (torx screw drivers or torx bits, wire strippers/cutter/crimper) and somewhat mechanically inclined. Just google "DWS779 xps light kit" and they should be the top result. This might be an easier option versus going to a DeWalt service center in the post pandemic world. |
Question: | Does this miter saw come with a laser or any guiding system |
Answer: | It does not come with any laser for guidance. You may find my answer a bit crude, I've been using miter saws for many years and the best guiding system I found to work is my/your eyes. Having lasers or no lasers you still need to use your eyes to get the work piece spot on near the cutoff point. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Is there an LED cut line |
Answer: | You can add the LED light to this saw. Not a laser but a shadow light that show exactly where the saw blade will cut. I just did it last night. Parts can be had for about $70. This basically turns it into a model 780 which is much more expensive. Pretty simple to add. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do the filters come with the unit or do you need to buy them separately |
Answer: | The unit comes with filters. Replacement you have to buy separately. |
Question: | What size room does this cover |
Answer: | i think it would work fine for a 2 car garage it states it can filter 400 cubic feet per minute on high i use it with another ambient air cleaner to filter the air in my sharpening business shop which about 600 s.f. |
Question: | How does a person know when it is time to change the filter |
Answer: | I take a black sharpie and put black lines on the new filter when I can no longer see the lines I know its time to replace. |
Question: | I understand you get what you pay for but other than price i see no difference to the jet 708620b. anyone regret buying this unit over the jet |
Answer: | Sorry for the extremely late reply, but I thought others might still be comparing the WEN and JET models of air cleaners. The WEN 3417 or 3415T are the units which should be compared directly to the JET 708620b. Those units have virtually identical CFM and hardware specs to the JET. The WEN 3410 you referenced in this question is made for a much smaller space and pumps a lot less air, so it's not really a valid comparison. Compare equivalent models that have similar CFM ratings in order to get a fair idea of how the two brands truly compare. In that scenario, the WEN is a very good alternative to the JET, particularly given the shipping damage many owners have reported when purchasing the JET unit. The units are likely pretty equal, but using poor packaging which provides inadequate shipping protection can turn any 5-star product into a 1-star doorstop. I always check the percentages of 5-star and 1-star reviews to get an idea of the ratio of customers having problems versus perfectly happy customers. You might have a different method. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i mount the axtra 8-outlet power strip on the table saw |
Answer: | We do not recommend modifications on our tools as they are designed to work as is. If you are meaning plugging it in to a 8 outlet powers strip: that is not recommended. This unit should be plug into a direct outlet of using the appropriate extension cord ( VOLTS, LENGTH and WIRE GAUGE) |
Question: | What are the dimensions of the unit on the stand when closed up. WxHxD? Need to know if it will fit in the storage cubby I have in the garage |
Answer: | Laid down flat - 27 1/2" wide, 46" long (you can take about 3" off this by using the shorter handle length slots), 25" high with rail on (21 1/2" with it off). You can stand it up or lay it down - either works. |
Question: | Does this saw accept dado blade set |
Answer: | Yes, you will need the Dado Throat Plate which is DeWalt Part Number DWE7402D1. Per DeWalt, do not attempt to stack dado blades thicker than 13/16" (20 mm). Do not use dado blades larger than 8" (200 mm) diameter. Since dado cuts are not thru-cuts, the cuts must be performed with the blade guard assembly removed. To remove the blade guard assembly, pull riving knife/blade guard release lever and pull up on the guard or riving knife to remove. When using the dado, the special dado insert (also sold as an accessory) must be used. |
Question: | How good would this saw be for a beginning woodworker on a limited budget |
Answer: | It's a great saw. It has some safety features that I love. If you have a limited budget I would recommend that you stave for a couple of days and buy this saw. It is bulky and it's gonna cost you a little over $600 out the door but it's worth it. Remember when buying tools try to buy the best you can find. You don't want a cheap tool to stop working in the middle of the day. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How hard is it to level the jig when adjusting the side support |
Answer: | The bit is capable of being set to the depth of 1/4. I have never personally made a dovetail this small though because I used the jig only a few times and I only worked with soft woods. I believe if hardwoods were being used 1/4 would be adequate depth. |
Question: | I looked at the videos. Am I correct in assuming that you have to remove the blade guard in order to use this |
Answer: | I believe the bit is a 3/8 dovetail bit. I bought mine when I bought the jig. I would look up the jig on amazon and go to the "people who bought this item often buy..." I think that's how I got mine. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What is the absolute minimum thickness the jig will cut? I need to rip 1/4" strips |
Answer: | Yes, you can make box joints with the 4210. |
Question: | What is the difference between the gr 100 and the gr 200by model and is it worth the price difference |
Answer: | I believe it's a 1/2" shank but I'm not absolutely sure. It's in my shop up in CT and I'm in NYC at the moment, so I can't check it. I'll check this weekend and send confirmation. But your router should be able to handle 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" shanks with different collets. |
