13 best diesel fluid
Diesel fluid typically refers to a variety of fluids and additives used in heavy-duty commercial vehicles and automotive applications to maintain and enhance the performance of diesel engines and associated systems. These fluids play a crucial role in ensuring the proper operation and longevity of diesel-powered vehicles. Here are some key types of diesel fluids and their purposes:
Diesel Fuel: Diesel fuel is the primary fluid used to power diesel engines. It is a hydrocarbon-based fuel derived from crude oil and is specifically designed for compression-ignition engines. Diesel fuel is available in different grades and cetane levels, with low sulfur diesel (ULSD) being the most common type due to environmental regulations.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF): DEF is a non-toxic, colorless, and odorless fluid used in vehicles equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). DEF is typically composed of urea and deionized water and is injected into the exhaust stream to convert harmful NOx emissions into nitrogen and water vapor.
Engine Oil: Engine oil is a critical fluid for diesel engines as it provides lubrication, cooling, and protection against wear and corrosion. Diesel engine oils are designed to withstand the high temperatures and pressures within diesel engines and come in various viscosity grades to suit different operating conditions.
Coolant (Antifreeze): Coolant is a mixture of water and antifreeze that circulates through the engine's cooling system. It helps regulate engine temperature, prevents freezing in cold weather, and provides corrosion protection for the engine's cooling components.
Transmission Fluid: In vehicles with automatic transmissions, transmission fluid is essential for smooth gear shifting and heat dissipation. Heavy-duty diesel vehicles often use specialized transmission fluids designed to withstand heavy loads and high temperatures.
Power Steering Fluid: Power steering fluid is used in vehicles equipped with power steering systems to assist with steering and reduce driver effort. It helps maintain smooth and responsive steering.
Brake Fluid: Brake fluid is used in hydraulic brake systems to transmit force from the brake pedal to the brake calipers or wheel cylinders. It must have a high boiling point to withstand the heat generated during braking.
Differential Fluid: Differential fluid is used in the differential (rear axle) of vehicles to lubricate and cool the gears and bearings. It ensures smooth operation and prevents wear.
Hydraulic Fluid: Some heavy-duty diesel vehicles, especially those with hydraulic systems (e.g., construction equipment), use hydraulic fluid to power various hydraulic components such as loaders, excavators, and cranes.
Proper maintenance and regular fluid changes are essential to keep diesel-powered vehicles running smoothly and efficiently. Using the correct type and quality of fluids, as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, is crucial to ensure optimal performance and extend the lifespan of the engine and related components.

Diesel exhaust fluid is one of the key elements of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) process used by most medium and heavy-duty engine builders to meet EPA 2010 regulations. Blue DEF is a non-toxic solution of 67.5 percent purified water and 32.5 percent ultra pure automotive grade urea. Blue DEF is not a fuel or fuel additive. Instead, when injected into the exhaust stream and passed over a catalyst, helps convert NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapour, two harmless and natural components of the air. is stable, colourless and odourless, and meets ISO Standards 22241 for purity and composition and is an American Petroleum Institute (API) certified diesel exhaust fluid. These are the highest quality and safety standards in place to ensure optimum SCR performance. Making sure you do not run out of in a SCR equipped truck is simple, watch the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) gauge, which is part of the diesel fuel gauge, for when it is time to refill. DEF is stored in a dedicated tank next to the fuel tank on the driver's side. The tanks range in size from 6 to 23 gallons depending on the truck's application. The DEF tank fill opening is designed to accommodate a DEF fill nozzle to ensure only DEF is put into the tank. A diesel fuel nozzle will not fit into the DEF tank opening.
- One gallon of is used approximately every 300 miles
- A truck with a 20 gallon DEF tank can go up to 6000 miles between fill-ups
- When used in an SCR system will reduce the levels of NOx emissions of those engines

Product description
Valvoline Premium Blue Diesel Exhaust Fluid enables on-highway diesel engines to meet the EPA's near-zero NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emissions levels required for 2010 and later. The Environmental Protection Agency requires all 2010 and later on-highway diesel engines to meet NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emission standards. In order to meet these lower standards, most engine manufacturers are using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust after-treatment. These systems mix Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) with exhaust gas and use a catalytic converter to change the NOx emissions into Nitrogen and water.
- Compatible with all on and off highway SCR systems
- API and AdBlue certified
- Meets ISO 22241 specification
- Manufactured and packaged using only dedicated equipment to ensure the product is pure and contaminant free

Question: | Does this 2 pack come with the pour spout |
Answer: | Yes, there is a pour spout. I regretted the purchase of this product because when the special freight is added it became so much more expensive than purchasing it locally. Sam's Club has it for a lower price and there is no freight charge. Some Speedway gas stations have it at the pump which makes it very convenient and even cheaper. |

Question: | I have a 2015 vw beetle tdi, will this work for my car as well? add light just came on. thank you |
Answer: | This will work fine in your Beetle it is the same fluid as delivered through the VW dealer network. Diesel Emissions Fluid must meet an International standard and it works in all vehicles that take Diesel Emission Fluid. |
Question: | Does the bottle, as shown, connect directly to the filler tube on the car, or is an adapter or another container needed? Thanks |
Answer: | The bottle connects directly to the throat of the holding tank in the car (2009 X5). Very simple to use, very clean, and zero mess. I read a suggestion to save the bottle and basically use it as a funnel for the next refill. The urea is about a tenth the price buying it in regular one gallon containers. |
Question: | Is there a difference between ad blue and Blue DEF |
Answer: | DO NOT use the cheap DEF found in a box at the big box stores and auto parts shops! It will cause your system to become contaminated. I just paid BMW to clean my tanks, nozzles and sensors and put their fluid in to get my car back on the road (2014 BMW 328d). DO NOT USE ANYTHING BUT THE PRODUCT RECOMMENDED BY YOUR CAR MANUFACTURER... |
