3 best rust dissolvers

Rust dissolvers are chemical products designed to remove rust and corrosion from various surfaces, particularly in the automotive industry. These products are essential for restoring metal components that have been affected by rust, ensuring safety and prolonging the lifespan of vehicles. Here is some information about rust dissolvers:

  1. Purpose: Rust dissolvers are formulated to dissolve and remove rust from metal surfaces. They work by breaking down the iron oxide (rust) and converting it into a more manageable form that can be easily removed.

  2. Applications: Rust dissolvers are commonly used in the automotive industry to treat rust on car bodies, frames, and various metal components such as nuts, bolts, and exhaust systems. They can also be used on other metal objects, including tools, machinery, and household items.

  3. Types of Rust Dissolvers: There are different types of rust dissolvers available, including:

    • Liquid Rust Converters: These products typically come in liquid form and can be applied directly to rusted surfaces. They contain chemicals that react with rust, converting it into a stable compound.

    • Aerosol Rust Removers: Aerosol rust dissolvers are convenient for treating smaller areas or hard-to-reach spots. They are applied as sprays and often contain chemicals that dissolve rust on contact.

    • Gel Rust Removers: Gel-based rust dissolvers adhere to vertical surfaces and are ideal for situations where a thick consistency is needed to cling to rusted areas.

  4. Safety Precautions: When using rust dissolvers, it's essential to follow safety precautions. This may include wearing protective gear such as gloves and eye protection, working in a well-ventilated area, and disposing of used products properly.

  5. Surface Preparation: Before applying a rust dissolver, it's crucial to clean the surface as thoroughly as possible. Remove loose rust, dirt, and grease to ensure the product can penetrate and work effectively.

  6. Post-Treatment: After using a rust dissolver, it's advisable to apply a protective coating or primer to prevent future rust formation. This can help prolong the life of the treated metal.

  7. Product Brands: Several automotive and hardware brands manufacture rust dissolvers, each with its unique formulations and application instructions. Popular brands include WD-40 Rust Remover Soak, Rust-Oleum Rust Dissolver, and Evapo-Rust, among others.

  8. Effectiveness: The effectiveness of rust dissolvers can vary depending on the product, the severity of rust, and the application method. Some products may require multiple applications for heavily rusted surfaces.

Rust dissolvers play a crucial role in maintaining the appearance and structural integrity of vehicles and metal objects. When used correctly, these products can help remove rust, inhibit further corrosion, and extend the lifespan of metal components, ultimately contributing to safer and more durable equipment.

Rust dissolvers are chemical compounds designed to remove rust and corrosion from various surfaces, particularly those found in the automotive industry. These products are commonly used in car care and maintenance to restore the appearance and functionality of metal parts and components. Here are some key points about rust dissolvers:

  1. Rust Removal: Rust dissolvers are formulated to break down and dissolve the iron oxide (rust) that forms on metal surfaces due to exposure to moisture and oxygen. They are effective at removing both light surface rust and heavier corrosion.

  2. Types of Rust Dissolvers: There are various types of rust dissolvers available, including:

    • Liquid Rust Removers: These are typically liquid solutions that can be applied directly to the rusted area. They work by chemically converting rust into a soluble compound that can be wiped or rinsed away.

    • Rust Converter: Rust converters are products that not only remove rust but also create a protective coating on the metal surface to prevent further corrosion.

    • Rust Penetrants: Penetrating oils or sprays are used to loosen rusted bolts, nuts, and other fasteners by penetrating the rust and making it easier to disassemble.

  3. Application: Rust dissolvers should be applied according to the manufacturer's instructions.Generally, you would clean the surface, apply the product, allow it to sit for a specified period to penetrate and dissolve the rust, and then wipe or rinse it off.

  4. Safety Precautions: When using rust dissolvers, it's essential to follow safety guidelines, such as wearing protective gloves and eye protection, working in a well-ventilated area, and avoiding skin contact or inhalation of fumes.

  5. Rust Inhibitors: After removing rust, it's advisable to apply a rust inhibitor or preventive coating to the cleaned metal surface. Rust inhibitors help protect against future corrosion by creating a barrier between the metal and environmental factors.

  6. Finishing: Depending on the specific application, you may need to repaint or refinish the metal surface after using a rust dissolver to restore its appearance and provide long-term protection.

  7. Automotive Use: Rust dissolvers are commonly used in the automotive industry to treat rusted areas on cars, trucks, and other vehicles. They can be applied to various components, including the chassis, suspension, exhaust system, and more.

  8. Maintenance: Regular maintenance and inspection of your vehicle can help identify and address rust issues early, preventing more extensive damage.

In summary, rust dissolvers are essential products for removing rust and corrosion from metal surfaces, particularly in the automotive industry. They help maintain the appearance and structural integrity of vehicles by eliminating rust and providing protection against future corrosion. Proper application and safety precautions are crucial when using these products.

User questions & answers

Question: Is rust bullet mbgsp clear liquid metal blast rust treatment and rust remover suitable for removing rust from the cast iron table top of a table saw
Answer: Yes it will remove rust from most any metal. We haven't found a metal surface that it doesn't remove rust from. So It will work on your cast iron table top.
Question: how is the product used
Answer: We put it in a spray bottle and we're using it to remove the rust from my old truck.
Question: Can you paint this and will it prevent futher rusting from occurring
Answer: Same answer as Bill Feb 12. Also, it does not prevent rust from occurring.
Question: does this have to be rinsed or wiped off, or can it be coated over after drying without rinsing/wiping
Answer: My experience. Used it this summer on some serious rust on a jeep floor panel. I followed manf. instructions best as I could. Removed as much loose rust as possible.Thoroughly wet it down w/metal blast, waited, and rinsed with water while metal blast was still wet. I let it dry completely before coating with rust bullet. I could see the transformation of the rust layer after metal blast. Seemed to convert the rust to a solid base. I believe this uses phosphoric acid, so likely the reason for thorough rinsing. I would think the rust bullet may not adhere well if any residual acid is left behind. If left to dry, maybe respray a bit and rinse while still wet.Overall, seemed to work pretty good. I used this combo on many rusted areas on the jeep. In some spots aluminum body filler was used followed by paint. So far holding up ok. Will tell better after the salty upstate NY winter. The key is getting to ALL the rust. Good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you dispose of this and is it safe for septic systems
Answer: It removes rust from every surface that I've tried. For clothes I use Whink Rust remover. it is sold here on Amazon. The rust will disappear upon contact with the rust stain on cloth.
Question: As i get older i notice my knees and elbows aren't as effective as they once were. do i apply this directly to the skin
Answer: I went to CLR's own website and found this: What surfaces should I not use CLR on?DO not use CLR on natural stone or marble, terrazzo, colored grout, painted or metallic glazed surfaces, plastic laminates, Formica, aluminum, steam irons, leaded crystal, refinished tubs or any damaged or cracked surface. CLR may etch older sinks, tubs and tiles. CLR is corrosive. Avoid contact with wood, clothing, wallpaper and carpeting. Some laminated surfaces (counter tops) are coated with a synthetic surface which may be affected by rust removers; clean spills immediately. However I did find a youtube video with a homemade recipe that seems to have been quite successful for a lot of people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lamfkNTAas Best of luck to you! :-)
Question: Do you have to soak item for it to work? Can you just put some on a wire brush and scrub the item that needs to be cleaned in order for it to work
Answer: Any metal capable of rust will be prone to rust if exposed to humid environments. The simple solution is after cleaning with EvapoRust is painting it to protect it.
Question: Does it work on cast iron cookware
Answer: With the evapo rust, you need to make sure there are no oils, grease, etc prior to being on the metal when you soak the evapo rust. Once you soak the evapo rust and the rust has been removed, the product has done its job. You do want to wash it off afterwards and dry it. To keep it from re rusting is another problem in of itself. We have a product called rust block that comes in either a trigger spray or aerosol can. Spray a layer of it on there and it will keep the object from re- rusting for up to a year

User questions & answers

Question: Would this stuff work for freeing up a seized piston in an engine that has been sitting
Answer: Yes. You can "paint " it on with a small brush. It might take a couple applications. The cooler the temperature the less the permatex will run.
Question: What's the safest way to dispose of this stuff? Can I flush it, and if so, should I dilute it first
Answer: I used this on my Hyundai Tiburon and i got some rust remover on the paint. Nothing happened too the paint and it has been 6months since i used it. Still no affect on the paint. I dont know for sure if this will guarentee your paint though. Did remove the rust very well though! Had to reapply 3 times but all the rust came off. Hope this helps!
Question: I have two windshield wiper arms I can't remove from the car without breaking and replacements are rare. Can this treat rust in place
Answer: Absolutely,. it will work on your rust issue. Just make sure to cover the area that you apply the Metal Rescue gel with a piece of plastic wrap sheet that fully covers it to prevent the gel from drying out before it can remove the rust. Since your rust is very light at the moment, it should only take the gel a half hour to an hour to completely remove the rust. Once the gel is removed, you must protect the bare metal area with a rust inhibitor or some touch-up paint. In fact, I just removed some light rust that was appearing on the trunk hinge on my FR-S a few months ago. It removed the rust (it was in a hard to get at area, but, the plastic wrap easily formed around it and kept the gel from drying out) and I coated the exposed metal area with some touch-up paint and it looks perfect. It's always better to correct rust issues when it first appears because the rust hasn't had enough time to etch deeply into the metal.
Question: When using this on a car does any paint come off
Answer: Metal Rescue is a rust remover. You know that brass will tarnish and possibly corrode, but, I do not know if Metal Rescue is formulate to remove corrosion on brass. you should go to the manufacturer's website and pose your question there. It may answered in their FAQ section. Good luck.
