13 best waterproofers
Waterproofers, in the context of car care and automotive maintenance, refer to products and treatments used to protect a vehicle's exterior surfaces from water damage and related issues. These products are designed to create a barrier that repels water, preventing it from infiltrating and potentially causing damage to various parts of the vehicle. Here's what you need to know about waterproofers in the automotive context:
Purpose: The primary purpose of waterproofers is to provide a protective layer on the car's exterior surfaces, such as the paint, glass, and trim, to repel water and moisture. This helps prevent issues like rust, corrosion, and water spots.
Types of Waterproofers: There are several types of waterproofers available for automotive use:
- Paint Sealants: These are often synthetic polymer-based products that create a durable, hydrophobic (water-repelling) layer on the paint, offering protection against UV rays, contaminants, and water damage.
- Wax: Car wax, especially synthetic or ceramic waxes, can provide a layer of water resistance to the vehicle's paint while enhancing its shine.
- Glass Sealants: Waterproofers designed for glass surfaces help repel water and improve visibility in rainy conditions.
- Trim and Plastic Sealants: These products protect plastic and trim pieces from fading, cracking, and moisture damage.
Application: Waterproofers are typically applied to the clean and dry surface of the car. The application method can vary depending on the product, but it often involves using applicator pads, microfiber towels, or spray-on formulations. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper application.
Benefits:
- Protection: Waterproofers protect the vehicle's exterior surfaces from water damage, including rust and corrosion.
- Enhanced Appearance: Many waterproofers provide a deep shine and gloss to the paint, making the car look more attractive.
- Ease of Cleaning: A hydrophobic surface makes it easier to clean the car, as dirt and contaminants are less likely to adhere to the treated surfaces.
- Improved Visibility: Glass sealants improve visibility during rainy weather by causing rainwater to bead up and roll off the windshield and windows.
Duration: The effectiveness and durability of waterproofers can vary depending on the product and environmental conditions. Some products may need reapplication every few months, while others can last longer.
Compatibility: Ensure that the waterproofing product you choose is compatible with the specific surfaces you intend to treat, whether it's paint, glass, or plastic.
Maintenance: Regular washing and maintenance of your car are still important, even with the application of waterproofers.Cleaning the vehicle helps maintain the effectiveness of the waterproofing treatment.
In summary, waterproofers for cars are products designed to protect a vehicle's exterior surfaces from water damage and improve its overall appearance. They can help prevent issues like rust, corrosion, and water spots while making it easier to maintain a clean and shiny car. The choice of waterproofing product should align with the specific needs and surfaces of your vehicle.

Answer: | I have used it on rain coat, two pair UGG boots, isotoner gloves and a pair of UGG suede slippers that I always run outside in. Of course first 24 hours, AFTER bringing in house from spraying you will notice smell and may even feel a slightly different texture to your material items. After about 48 hours it's as if you never sprayed anything on them at all. Regarding dogs, I have a 215lb English Cream, Golden Retriever. Smartest dog I have ever known but I have to vac 2x a day just to keep up. Hair is not attracted to sprayed items at all. Enjoy your day. Bj |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this product be used on a leather stearing wheel to maybe hide that sticky feel |
Answer: | It should work on leather to stop it from absorbing water. |
Question: | will this make a boot or shoe water proof |
Answer: | Yes, it will. |
Question: | Can you spray the inside the shoes |
Answer: | Thanks for asking! We would recommend to spray the entire surface from 7 - 10 inches away with a light, even coat |
Question: | How much will the color be affected if used on white sneakers |
Answer: | I applied 2 coats & let dry completely between coats...outdoors (about 8-12 hrs between each coat, during 75+/dry weather & avoided inhaling fumes)...to a pair of relatively expensive, white, 'high top' sneakers & while slight...2 BFFs said they could barely notice the color change 'close up' when completely dry, & not at all when I was wearing them...it still bothered me. So, I put ONE 'SCANT' coat of white WAX, KIWI shoe polish over this 'waterproofing' & that worked great, making them as white as B4...Even 3 years later, I can't believe how good they still look. Living in SE Pennsylvania, I have worn them thru MANY DOWNPOURS/snowstorms/while cleaning snow off my car...even when I've, unintentionally, stepped in water puddles...stm…also at several sporting events, concerts etc. & my feet stay dry as can be! BTW, I haven't reapplied the Kiwi Waterproofing since I first got them, but I have reapplied the white shoe polish, after using a diluted REGULAR Dawn/warm water solution & a soft, microfiber cloth to gently clean & allowing them to dry completely...to keep them looking good, for as long as possible...& only notice 'dirt' & VERY SMALL amount of the white polish on the cloth, that easily washes off the cloth, so that tells me I'm not 'washing off/effecting' the original coats of waterproofing...A lot is still left in the can, but since it is 3+ yrs old, just getting a new can, for when I find a new pair of boots I'm looking for & sharing with Friends...MUCH cheaper for same amount, here @ AMAZON than I paid at a shoe store (price sticker still on it) & saw your question/concern. Hoping this helps...HAPPY THANKSGIVING/HOLIDAY SEASON!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | I already put linseed oil on my pine joists (in my shower) over a year ago now. Could I now put this product on for a better waterproof seal |
Answer: | I don't see why not. It has been a year. If it was only a few months, I would not use it. |
Question: | Can this be used on outdoor cedar furniture to seal and maintain the woods natural color |
Answer: | I have not tried cedar specifically but so far the all the other types of wood have kept their original color. There was a little bit of a whitish film right after application but that went away after it soaked in. |
Question: | If i use this on a trellis made of new pine 2x4s, how long can i reasonably expect it to last? when will i want to to reapply? no ground contact |
Answer: | If you apply the product generously and then come back before it dries and do another light application you should get a minimum of 3 years and most likely 5 years. |
Question: | I have made a wooden sink cover for my kitchen. Would this product keep the wood from warping/taking on water damage |
Answer: | We used this product in the back of a box truck. The floor has been wet many times over the last year and the wood has held up great. We have no warping or damage. Good luck. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use on polyester |
Answer: | I would think it would be fine to spray the outer fabric of the coat. I wouldn't apply so much as to saturate to down. |
Question: | Can I use this in a down coat |
Answer: | I sprayed a 7 person tent about twice with one can. Worked great. Went camping and had two small leaks near the seams after a heavy downpour over several days of camping. Used a second can starting with those areas and had no leaks the second camping trip! Now I just reapply with one can depending on how much camping we expect to do that season. |
Question: | How much of an area can one can cover |
Answer: | I understand your condition. I flew in the Navy, and pre-flights in the rain were the worst. I'm not sure this product is you. It's not resistant to abrasions, and would definitely not stand up to laundry detergent. It's designed to be applied to an existing water resistant material, like a tarp or tent. Although it says you can apply to other things like boots, in my opinion, this would cause the product to wear off fairly quickly. You have my sincere sympathy and hope that you find a good solution. |
Question: | I work in the oilfield. its raining like crazy right now. can i use this on my fr clothes, wash them, and still be water repellant? im soaked. lol |
Answer: | I have used it on rain coat, two pair UGG boots, isotoner gloves and a pair of UGG suede slippers that I always run outside in. User questions & answers
Question: | I need to weather proof a paper attached to outdoor posting signs. Will this work for me |
Answer: | This should work well as a lot of mariners use it to waterproof their maps when boating. I would put at least 3 coats on, with a drying time of 1 hour between each coat. |
Question: | It says it can be used on Any porus surface. Will it work on Field Jacket and Field Pants |
Answer: | I would use Scotchgard Heavy Duty Watershield for fabrics on those. It worked on my friend's well-used tent, she'd used it before camping with her grandkids at the lake and it rained. |
Question: | Does this work on fabric, such as canvas and cotton or nylon |
Answer: | You could try THOMPSON'S® WATERSEAL® FABRIC SEAL. also at Amazon. |
Question: | If you plan to paint the wood too. Should this go under or over the paint |
Answer: | I would use it over any paint or stain. You may want to check the directions on the paint since it may already have wood sealant and protection, but an extra coat of Thompsons would probably add some additional protection. Make sure the paint is completely dry before using the Thompsons. |

His discovery became known as Thompson's WaterSeal Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer and initially was used by architectural and construction firms for concrete applications.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it slippery when wet |
Answer: | Nope!!! Use a good drive way sealant. This product is very lightweight and does not hold up well. |
Question: | Can you apply primer and paint over the sealer once it has completely dried/cured |
Answer: | Apologies for not answering this sooner. This is a penetrating sealer / water repellent and does not contain a resin so it will soak into the substrate and completely disappear when fully dried. |
Question: | If used on a garden bed will it excrete chemicals into the plants |
Answer: | This product is specifically designed for exterior concrete & masonry as well as Stone and stucco. It would work perfect for your sidewalk and around the foundation of your home but I probably would not recommend it for your garage just because it mainly offers water repellency and very little oil and chemical protection. You might want to use a actual film-forming sealer for that unless you're only worried about water intrusion in which case this would work fine. |
Question: | Does this look dry after curing? I'm looking to use this on flagstone. Any preparation recommendations aside from pressure washing |
Answer: | Hi Don. Our product is mainly designed to keep water from penetrating through the treated surface and allows vapor transmission or "breathability" through the other side so I'm not sure if this product would be ideal for waterproofing a basement floor. I would think an acrylic product might work better for your purposes. You could also check with that product manufacturer to see how well tile will stick to it. |
