13 best derwent graphic pencils
Derwent Graphic Pencils are high-quality drawing pencils that are widely used by artists, illustrators, and anyone interested in creating detailed and expressive drawings. These pencils are known for their consistent performance and come in various grades to cater to different drawing needs. Here's what you should know about Derwent Graphic Pencils:
Grades: Derwent Graphic Pencils are available in a range of grades, from 9H (the hardest) to 9B (the softest). The H grades are harder and produce lighter lines, while the B grades are softer and create darker, richer lines. The F grade stands in between and is often used for general-purpose drawing.
Quality: These pencils are known for their high-quality graphite cores. The cores are smooth, allowing for precise and consistent lines. They are also easy to blend, making them versatile for various drawing techniques.
Tonal Range: The wide range of grades in Derwent Graphic Pencils allows artists to achieve a full tonal range in their drawings. Artists can switch between harder and softer pencils to create depth and shading in their artwork.
Versatility: These pencils are suitable for a variety of applications, including sketching, drawing, shading, and more. Artists use them for everything from detailed illustrations to expressive, gestural sketches.
Packaging: Derwent Graphic Pencils are typically sold individually, in sets of graded pencils, or as part of larger sketching or drawing sets. The packaging often indicates the pencil grade and may include a color-coded system for easy identification.
Blending and Shading: Many artists appreciate the ease with which Derwent Graphic Pencils can be blended and layered. Blending tools such as blending stumps, tortillons, or your fingers can be used to achieve smooth transitions and gradients in drawings.
Erasing: These pencils are erasable, but some of the softer grades (B grades) may leave more graphite residue on the paper, making it a bit challenging to erase completely. Artists often use high-quality erasers to address this issue.
Paper Selection: The choice of paper can significantly affect the results when using Derwent Graphic Pencils. Many artists prefer to use high-quality, textured papers that allow for better control and shading.
Sharpening: To achieve fine lines and maintain precision, it's important to keep your Derwent Graphic Pencils sharp. A high-quality pencil sharpener is recommended for this purpose.
Artistic Application: Artists use Derwent Graphic Pencils for a wide range of artistic styles and subjects, including portraits, landscapes, still life, and more. They are also suitable for both beginners and experienced artists.
Overall, Derwent Graphic Pencils are a trusted choice in the world of art supplies due to their consistent quality and the ability to create a wide range of effects in drawings. Whether you're a professional artist or just starting with drawing, these pencils can be a valuable addition to your art toolbox.

Derwent Graphic Graphite Pencils Tin with Pencil Sharpener (Set of 6)
The Graphic pencils are a Derwent staple; graphite was first discovered in the 1500s in Borrowdale in the Lake District, a stones throw from Derwents first pencil factory and the company produced the first graphite pencil in the UK.
A Popular Choice
The 6 tin contains 6 different degrees of Derwent Graphic pencils, plus a sharpener. The pencils are a popular choice and are widely used by designers, artists and illustrators.
Finished in black livery with a distinct orange stripe for easy identification, the pencils degree is imprinted into its paintwork. The hexagonal barrel allows for greater precision and control and the pencils are easy to sharpen and break resistant for long periods of use.
Graphic 6 Tin
H stands for Hard and B stands for Black, therefore the higher the number the Harder or Blacker the pencil. The Graphic 6 tin contains HB, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B drawing pencils, offering soft smudge-able lines to build up layers of tone and the harder 2H pencil for fine straight lines and detailed work, plus a sharpener.

User questions & answers
Question: | do these crumble or chalk up the paper very much while drawing dry, or when used wet, compared to traditional wc pencils? thank you for your help |
Answer: | You might try calling Pental. They sell eraser refills but I'm not sure of the part number. Also. I bought large erasers that I use. I don't bother using the eraser on the pencil at all. Ya can't have enough erasers (Humor). |
Question: | Do they play well with others? Like If were to use them in tandem with other watercolor pencils for a pop of color or mix to dull or shade a color |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | hello. I am looking for a good pencil for laying down an underdrawing for a watercolor painting. would you recommend these? thank you for your help |
Answer: | Yes it comes with .3 .5 .7 .9 in a bubble envelop. |
Question: | What paintbrush/s would work best with these pencils |
Answer: | This was a set of four pencils, each for a different size of lead. I was surprised to find that each pencil arrived with a 2-inch stick of lead pre-loaded in the barrel. Prior to receiving the set, I had locally bought packages of spare lead in each of the four sizes, but was still happy to discover they arrived loaded, especially because the largest lead size was not in stock at the first stationery store I visited. I have been entirely pleased with performance of the pencils so far. I use them for creative sketching en plein aire mostly. Very handy not to need a sharpener anymore, though I still use wood pencils for my shading style of drawing. Both types of instrument have their place for me. |

STAEDTLER found the right conditions for its plantation in Ecuador in South America. Over an area of about 1,800 hectares there, the trees will grow that will become the STAEDTLER pencils of the future.
