9 best sega master system consoles

The Sega Master System is a home video game console that was released by Sega in 1985. It was Sega's first foray into the console market, and while it didn't achieve the same level of success as its successor, the Sega Genesis, it still holds a place in gaming history.

Key features and information about the Sega Master System:

  1. Hardware: The Master System featured an 8-bit CPU, which was less powerful than the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), its primary competitor at the time. It had 64KB of RAM and used cartridges as its primary game format.

  2. Controller: The console came with a unique controller that had a directional pad, two action buttons (1 and 2), and start and pause buttons. Some games also supported additional peripherals like light guns and 3D glasses.

  3. Games: The Master System had a library of over 300 games, including popular titles like "Alex Kidd in Miracle World," "Sonic the Hedgehog," "Phantasy Star," and "Wonder Boy." Sega's mascot, Alex Kidd, was prominent on the system.

  4. Compatibility: The Master System had backward compatibility with the Sega SG-1000, a previous Sega console, through the use of an adapter.

  5. Challenger to the NES: While the Master System faced stiff competition from the NES, it found success in some regions, such as Europe and Brazil. In Brazil, it continued to be popular for many years after its discontinuation.

  6. Sega Mark III: In Japan, the Master System was known as the Sega Mark III. It had some design differences and a different game library tailored to the Japanese market.

  7. 3D Glasses: One unique feature of the Master System was its 3D glasses accessory, which allowed players to experience 3D effects in certain games.

  8. Legacy: Although it didn't achieve the same level of success as the NES, the Sega Master System played a significant role in Sega's history. It laid the foundation for Sega's future consoles, including the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) and the Sega Saturn.

  9. Collector's Item: Today, the Master System has become a collector's item for retro gaming enthusiasts. Some of its games and peripherals are highly sought after by collectors.

In summary, the Sega Master System was Sega's first entry into the console market, known for its 8-bit graphics, unique games, and competition with the NES. While it may not have achieved the same level of popularity, it remains an important part of gaming history.

Sega Master System 1 - Video Game Console

Based on 46 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The SEGA Master System is the videogame console that almost could. Despite its technical superiority to the dominant NES, the machine lacked just one critical thing: Mario. Without this icon and the emergence of Sonic the Hedgehog still five years on the horizon, the Master System ran a far distant second to the NES during the 8-bit generation -- the phoenix-like resurrection of videogames following the Atari 2600-lead industry crash. The Master System was essentially a conduit for SEGA to get its arcade hits into the home. Even though the Master System did not have the horsepower to completely replicate the experience of SEGA's enviable stable of arcade smashes like OutRun and Space Harrier, there was no other place to play these games outside of an arcade. But SEGA also released plenty of great, original games for the console over its lifespan, including Alex Kidd in Miracle World and one of the greatest role-playing games of all-time, Phantasy Star. However, thanks to Nintendo's iron-grip agreements, few third-party publishers ever supported the machine and software came out at a very frustrating pace. Months could go by between major releases and that made a dud on the Master System feel even more painful. One of the Master System's quirkiest (and coolest) features, though, was the 3D Glasses peripheral. The thick, wraparound shades may have looked a little clunky from the outside, but the effect was positively stunning. Sadly, like the Master System itself, the peripheral was under-supported with just over a half-dozen games, including Maze Hunter 3D and Space Harrier 3D. Despite its narrow mass audience, the Master System had -- and still has -- a very loyal fan base. Thankfully, the thumping SEGA received with the Master System did not daunt its quest for the living room, leading to the Genesis, which corrected most of the Master System's mistakes and gave Nintendo a run for its money for the majority of the 16-bit generation.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it work on my Retrobit
Answer: You put the fluid on one end (or 99 percent rubbing alcohol) and insert into bottom of cartridge to run back and forth on the gold contact pins. Then, you take the dry side and do the same again. Wait a few minutes and your cleaned connector pins will work usually after one cleaning as most vintage games tend to collect dirt from contacting the cart slot for long periods of time
Question: Does it work in a normal sega genesis like the 2 or the
Answer: DON'T USE SANDPAPER ON YOUR GAMES! I'm assuming by 'corruption' you mean corrosion or rust. This may work, depending on how severe it is. They're worth picking up either way, since you'll need to clean some games eventually. If it doesn't work, I would recommend using Brite Boy metal polish if you can get it. In a pinch, Brasso or lemon juice can work. For Brite boy/Brasso- apply a TINY amount on a Q-tip, rub gently, clean off excess/residue immediately. Please keep in mind, both of these will actually remove a tiny layer of the metal contacts along with the corrosion... apply too much or too often & you risk ruining the cart. For lemon juice- soak a Q-tip, apply to contacts, let sit 10-15 seconds, then rub off with a dry Q-tip. Repeat as necessary. This is less abrasive than the metal polishes, but it takes a lot more effort to get results- and, if you don't get all of it cleaned off when you're done, the sugars mean you'll just rust over again later. Just, please- no sandpaper! You could seriously screw up your contacts!
Question: Could someoe please tell me what is this
Answer: These cards may be a little big for that. I would recommend using the 1UPCard Mini on Game Gear cartridges!
Question: will this work with a pal sega megadrive model
Answer: Yes, I've used it to wash swim suits and beach towels with good results.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with all cords and controllers
Answer: Indoor
Question: Does it come with controls and tv and power cord
Answer: Yes it will fit in a 40" space. Mine is on a small table
Question: Is this console compatible to the sega games I’m purchasing. I’m looking for the first sega console
Answer: Yes.
Question: does this system play sega master system 1 games
Answer: I had it outside planted in a container for two years. I loved it, and it looked fabulous. The only reason it isn't out any longer is that I live in New England and it got trashed by two bad storms last year - high wind and heavy snow broke the top 8" or so off. I had not planted it in the stand and was using floral wire to hold it upright, attached to the stair railing. I think that was my mistake - because it had less room to move in the storm, it broke because it couldn't bend. I liked it so much I'm thinking about getting it again for the same location. This time I would use the stand and put it in a container that the stand would fit in as I think this would make it more solid. I could imagine wanting to spray it with green floral spray paint (I've seen here on Amazon), but I hadn't planned on doing that as it looked just fine to me. I say that because it had faded a bit after two years since it sat in direct sun for easily half the day. I hope this helps... good luck!

Sega Master System Controller Pad without packaging (SEGA brand - Model#3020)

Based on 26 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The Sega Master System controller (SEGA brand - model#3020) WITHOUT PACKAGING has 2 buttons, one of which additionally performs the function of the traditional "Start" button; the pause button is on the game console itself. The original controllers, like Sega's previous systems, has the cord emerging from the side; in 1987 the design was changed to the now-typical top emerging cord. The controller uses the prevailing de facto standard Atari-style 9-pin connector and can be connected without modification to all other machines compatible with that standard, including the Atari 2600, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum with Kempston Interface or similar.

  • For use with Sega Master System
  • Officially SEGA brand product
  • The Master System controller has 2 buttons, one of which additionally performs the function of the traditional "Start" button
  • Highly collectible item
  • Brand new condition (Packaging is not included)

User questions & answers

Question: Would this be a good controller for a VIC
Answer: It is a hinged tree. It has a TON of branches that split into smaller branches. I usually put in the bottom section and straighten all of the branches before moving on to the next section. This makes assembly easier.
Question: Would this work on a C
Answer: There are no lights on this tree. You have to buy your own, which is better, because the lights in prelit trees only go out.
Question: Would this on a genesis
Answer: My husband built a 3 1/2' X 4' base to set it up on and the branches go over the edges of this base on all sides. It is definitely not skinny at the bottom, but not so big it looks bottom heavy. The tree slopes up nicely to the top. Hope this helps...
