12 best muslin for quilting
Muslin is a versatile and popular fabric choice for quilting and various other sewing projects. Here's what you need to know about muslin for quilting:
Material: Muslin is a lightweight, plain-woven cotton fabric known for its softness and breathability. It's made from natural cotton fibers, making it a popular choice for quilting as it's comfortable to work with and has a soft feel against the skin.
Texture: Muslin typically has a slightly coarse texture due to its plain weave, which makes it ideal for certain quilting techniques. The texture helps in holding quilt layers together and prevents shifting.
Color Options: Muslin is usually available in a natural or unbleached color, but it can also be found in various solid colors or even printed patterns, allowing quilters to choose the option that best suits their project.
Versatility: Muslin is highly versatile in quilting. It can be used for various purposes, including backing fabric, as a foundation for appliqué work, or as a base for hand quilting. Its neutral color also makes it a popular choice for quilt sandwich layers.
Durability: Muslin is a durable fabric that can withstand the wear and tear of quilting. It's known for its strength and longevity, ensuring that your quilts will last for generations.
Pre-Washing: Some quilters prefer to pre-wash muslin fabric to remove any sizing or shrinkage. Pre-washing can also soften the fabric and remove any potential chemical residues.
Thread Count: Muslin is often categorized by its thread count. A higher thread count indicates a finer and denser weave, while a lower thread count results in a coarser texture. The choice of thread count depends on the specific quilting project and personal preference.
Cost-Effective: Muslin is generally an affordable fabric option, making it accessible for quilters of all budgets.
Dyeing and Customization: Muslin is easily dyed or printed upon, allowing quilters to customize their fabric for unique projects. This flexibility makes it a great choice for creative quilting endeavors.
Care: Muslin is easy to care for and can be machine-washed and dried. It may wrinkle, but a hot iron can quickly smooth out any wrinkles.
In summary, muslin is a widely used fabric in quilting due to its versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness. It provides a sturdy base for quilting projects while offering the flexibility to customize and achieve the desired look for your quilts.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there an option to purchase 15 yards |
Answer: | Yes, you can..it is great for either hand embroidery or machine embroidery. Just remember, you need a stabilizer under the area you are working on. One that washes out or is "melted" with an iron work best for me. If you plan to put the embroidery on a garment, use a light weight stabalizer and carefully cut some of it away AFTER your work is finished. |
Question: | Is this fabric ready for dyeing? Is it free from any finishes, such as perm press |
Answer: | It is pretty thin felt actually. Decent quality but thin |
Question: | Is this a firm (on the coarser side) medium weight muslin |
Answer: | Hi! These felts are very stiff but I don’t think they would scratch your pans I bought them for crafting which was a mistake. They’re way too stiff for my purposes but I think they would be great for layering between pots and pans. Hope this helps! |

Question: | how thick is kona muslin |

Question: | Is this fabric good for injet printing |
Answer: | I've been using it as a liner for masks made with printed cotton. However, I should warn you that you may want to shop locally rather than by this if you're using it for masks. My package has been in CA since April 30! It's taken 7 days for it to travel from CHATSWORTH, CA 91311 to SANTA CLARITA CA DISTRIBUTION CENTER & it's sat at Santa Clarita for 2 days! I'm not sure what's going on in CA, but that's a very long transit time for just one state. |
Question: | How much fabric do you get |
Answer: | the package does not say but it is an unbleached color. It's not white. |
Question: | is this the same as Kona premium white |
Answer: | Yes, the thread count is the number of threads per square inch. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How stretchy is the material? I would like to use it to make a baby carrier |
Answer: | It is sold by the yard. One yard is 36" by the 118" fabric width. (Two yards would be 72" x 118".) I ordered 14 yards and it came on a bolt. It was 14 yards by 118 inches. |
Question: | What is the weight of this muslin |
Answer: | No this has a little cream when seen beside the kona white reg |
Question: | What color is it? White, off white, ivory |
Answer: | Hi, we only sell it by 10 yards increments |
Question: | Is the cotton organic |
Answer: | I can't say for sure, but it feels unfinished. I can tell you that it is very crisp, and somewhat coarse. I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than: crafting, pattern testing, or possibly as a photography backdrop. It's far to rough for apparel or curtains |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this fabric be used for punch needle hoop art |
Answer: | In my experience the muslin will not necessarily make a good skirt. It wrinkles heavily when washed and not soft enough to hang correctly. I use mine for background material and for making a mock up of my pattern to make sure it fits right. |
Question: | What are the dimension of this product , is it 45" by 5 yard as it says on the title |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Is this medium weight |
Answer: | It is not stretchy enough or heavy duty enough for a baby carrier for a growing baby that will use it awhile. I use musli to make or repair pants pockets. I did use it to make triangular wraps for sprained ankles to teach first aid to scouts. It is ok for a camp shirt. I hope this helps. For a baby carrier, you need a more heavy duty fabric such a canvas used to make tents or knapsacks. |
Question: | I am thinking about using this fabric to make curtains for my vintage camp trailer... My question is, would this be a good fabric for this use |
Answer: | I would say mid weight. Wash it before you make a muslin. |

Question: | Would this fabric work for hand embroidery |
Answer: | Well, it's good fabric for many projects, but it won't block out much light. |

Answer: | I have never heard of muslin used in skin care- sorry- this is for quilting |
Question: | What is the width of the fabric |
