8 best flight sims

Flight simulators, often referred to as flight sims, are video games or software applications that replicate the experience of piloting an aircraft. These simulations are popular among aviation enthusiasts, aspiring pilots, and gamers who are interested in experiencing the thrill of flying without leaving the ground. Here are some key points about flight sims:

  1. Realism: Flight simulators strive for a high level of realism, aiming to replicate the physics, controls, and behavior of real aircraft as closely as possible. This includes factors like aerodynamics, weather conditions, and cockpit instrumentation.

  2. Types of Aircraft: Flight sims cover a wide range of aircraft, from small general aviation planes to commercial airliners, military jets, and even spacecraft. Players can choose the type of aircraft and the specific model they want to fly.

  3. Training Tool: Flight simulators are often used as training tools for actual pilots. They provide a safe and cost-effective way for pilots to practice various flight maneuvers, emergency procedures, and instrument flying.

  4. Graphics and Visuals: Modern flight sims boast impressive graphics and visuals, including detailed 3D models of aircraft and realistic depictions of landscapes, airports, and cities. High-quality visuals enhance the immersion.

  5. Control Options: Flight sims can be played with a variety of control inputs, including joysticks, yokes, pedals, and even virtual reality (VR) headsets. These peripherals enhance the realism and control precision.

  6. Scenarios: Flight sims offer a wide range of scenarios and missions. Players can engage in casual free-flight exploration, complete challenging missions, or participate in online multiplayer events.

  7. Flight Planning: Some flight sims include tools for flight planning, allowing players to choose routes, set waypoints, and navigate using real-world navigation aids.

  8. Community and Modding: Many flight simulators have active communities of players and modders. This community involvement often results in the creation of additional aircraft models, scenery, and enhancements that can be added to the base game.

  9. Commercial and Civil Aviation: Flight simulators cater to both commercial and civil aviation interests. Commercial aviation simulators are used by airlines for pilot training, while civil aviation simulators are popular among hobbyists.

  10. Notable Flight Sims: Some popular flight simulators include Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D, and various versions of the FlightGear open-source simulator.

Flight sims offer a unique and immersive experience for those interested in aviation and flying. They can be used for entertainment, skill development, or as tools for serious training and practice. The choice of a flight simulator often depends on the individual's interests, whether it's casual flying, professional training, or a combination of both.

Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe

Based on 187 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Anti-aircraft fire blankets you. Blast debris hurls toward your propeller. And you wonder why you didn't join the navy. This ain't no free-flight, cloud-gunner, glory ride. This is ground assault: the real, gritty combat that can make or break a battle, and take your life in one massive explosion. Bombs shatter enemy airfields, trains, and tank columns as you streak across the European countryside in WWII's greatest planes, dodging small-arms fire, gripping your joystick with sweaty palms and white knuckles, pumped with adrenaline-living history.

As a U.S. Army Air Force, Royal Air Force, or Luftwaffe pilot in Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 3 you fly in the historical framework of the tactical air war in northwest Europe starting in mid-1943, but there's a significant difference. The skill and perseverance you and your squadron or Staffel bring to each battle can alter the tactical situation and the timeline of the campaign. This open-ended and flexible campaign means you can influence events, alter history, and extend the timeline to add new technology to your arsenal. How you handle these tactical and technological advantages will determine the outcome.

In Combat Flight Simulator 3, it's 1943, and no one knows what's going to happen.

New features include:

  • Enhanced campaign play sends you on involved tactical missions in a campaign where success or failure can move the frontline, influence the quality of equipment available, and even change the outcome of the war
  • New collection of 18 aircraft featuring bombers with crews (fly medium bombers and take control of the bombardier or gunner position), stunning 3-D cockpit detail, accurate performance and damage modeling, medium bomber operations, WWII state-of-the-art aircraft (including the first jet fighters)
  • Custom graphics engine powers super-high detail ground-attack targets and improved scenery with enhanced 3-D modeling and texturing
  • Cooperative multiplayer missions and free-for-all dogfights via the Internet and LAN
  • Reactive world: areas of the campaign world will trigger events, spawn aircraft, generate flak, etc. in response to your presence
  • Role playing elements: pilots have qualities like Bombing Skill, Vision, and Health
  • Strategy: you make decisions that influence how the war is fought, where to put the pressure on the enemy, and what aircraft improvements are crucial to the war effort

Review

With stunning graphics and accurate flight models, Combat Flight Simulator 3 lets you revisit the Western Front during World War II as a pilot in a variety of production and prototype period aircraft. Significant improvements have been made over the earlier versions of the series, such as the addition of a dynamic campaign and cooperative multiplayer mode. Plus there is incredible attention to detail--with a new graphics engine that combines the ability to render planes in flight with highly detailed terrain that looks great even at low levels, adding a new dimension to low-level bombing runs.

There is a price to pay for this attention to detail: performance. You're going to need a high-end processor and graphics card to get the most from this game. We would recommend a Pentium 4 and GeForce4 combination (or equivalent) to get full satisfaction. Anything less and you have to start compromising on the in-game detail settings, or accept stuttering frame rates.

There are 18 aircraft that you can fly in the game, plus many variant models, though there are some notable omissions. While you can happily take control of a Spitfire, Me-109, P51 Mustang, or Junkers 88, you won't come across a Flying Fortress anywhere in the game. The lack of heavy bombers is strange, especially considering the theatre of operations.

Criticisms aside, there is still plenty to enjoy. The flight models are excellent, especially when you switch on the realism settings, with each aircraft having distinct characteristics. The missions are well thought out, as is the campaign system, which enables you to gain access to more aircraft as you progress and acquire skills, which can improve your tolerance to G-forces for example.

Combat Flight Simulator 3 is a worthy addition to the genre. It has enough to keep long-time flight sim fans entertained and is also accessible enough for novices to pick up and play. --Jason Weston -- Amazon.co.uk

  • Choose to fly for the U.S., England, or the German Luftwaffe in 34 different and unique aircraft
  • You'll battle against tough AI-controlled opponents in the European Theatre Of Operations, or form squadrons with friends and go on cooperative missions
  • Switch positions between pilot, gunner or bombardier -- or fly in experimental jets that barely made it into combat
  • Reactive game world reponds to your presence -- trigger new events, unlock aircraft, and much more
  • Fantastic graphic displays with enhanced 3D modeling and textures, with realistic cloud and weather modeling make you feel like you're really 600 ft. in the air

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work on Windows
Answer: I have Windows 7. But I didn't like anything about the game. So about two days I uninstalled it. Never played it again and game it away. It ran on Windows 7 without a problem, never crashed.
Question: I like my win 8.1 friend would love to find out if this program will work with win. 8.1. anybody out there can you please help
Answer: As I recall, compatibility for this ceases after Windows XP. Windows 7 pro had a feature called XP Mode, I believe, which could run XP programs, but all XP support was dropped with Windows 8. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure this is the case, although it's been quite a while since I've played this on our Vista desktop. As for the game: Excellent game especially for its time (2002). Still very realistic and while the graphics on the ground are horrible, the graphics in the air are all that matter and they're great. Haz fun.
Question: Does this Sim work on windows
Answer: My Sim does not work with Windows 7. My game card is a Radeon X300/X550/X1050 series. It should work, but it will not. I need some expert help making my system work so I can enjoy my Combat Flight Simulator again. Help...somebody...help?
Question: does it work with windows 10 and thustmaster usb joystick
Answer: Yes it works with Windows 10. I don't know about your specific joystick, but it works with the one I have, a Saitek ST200.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I attach a 34" Monitor to this (or three of them?) Or does it only fit
Answer: You can attach a single 34" monitor (or larger) but if you plan to attach three of them, absolute max size is 32" with 27" being recommended as the max/best size in triple configuration. Please ensure that your monitors have the VESA mounting in the back (4 hole pattern).
Question: Hello, how much space is needed to use this item
Answer: Hello Rawllee, as the other people suggested 5ftx5ft is what is needed. Ideal placement is in corner of room to minimize the space taken.
Question: What size monitors can be put up and how do you configure them to spread out over three tvs do it looks natural
Answer: Up to 30" (must be VESA compatible - 4-bolt patten on back). You enable a setting in the graphics card configuration that "spreads" the desktop onto the 3 monitors and corrects for the bezel width.
Question: Hello, how heavy is this seat
Answer: Are you asking about the total weight of this cockpit or just the seat (apart from the rest of the framework). The total weight of this cockpit is around 120 lbs. The seat itself probably weighs around 30 lbs or so. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: El flight Simulator 2019 tienen versión en español
Answer: Hola Gracias por tu mensaje. Juegos de simulador en ingles y español. El manual está en ingles, frances e italiano, pero la guía de instalación está solo en ingles. Lamentablemente no hay manual en español en la actualidad. Saludos cordiales, Dean
Question: Are the graphics better than those in fsx? If not I'm not interested
Answer: Hello Thank you for your question. Comparing graphics is subjective and different opinions will of course vary. What I can say is that the quality will vary from aircraft to aircraft and from airport to airport/scenery, but you can checkmark various settings via the launcher and advance settings to increase quality (please read included manual on disc for how to do this). The leve of detail you can obtain will of course also depend on the capabilities of your graphics card. While of course graphics are important, as a simulator and not an arcade/console game, the most important aspect is the actual simulated flight physics, of which this simulator faithfully recreates for many hundreds of different aircraft. This sim has been in development for over 20 years, and has been used in a range of projects in academia and industry (including NASA) and even home-built cockpits. ATC Flight Simulator Company builds FAA approved flight simulators that use FlightGear for the visuals, so it's safe to say this is one of the more advanced simulators available. Kind regards, Dean
Question: can this be returned if not what was wanted
Answer: Hello Thank you for your question. If you are unhappy with your purchase, please contact us directly and we will be happy to assist. As others have mentioned, you can indeed download this, however the download does not include the many extras that our disc version includes. Some customers prefer software on disc for a number of different reasons, along with the additional benefits and after sale support provided by PixelClassics. There are many benefits to this package which are not included by default with the download. 1) This deluxe edition includes the entire world wide scenery. That's over 13GB of data and includes scenery that is not included within the initial download. 2) 600+ bonus aircraft on disc. That's around 580 more over that of Microsoft's offerings, and of course at a much lower cost. Again, these bonus aircraft are not included in the initial download, and it would take you a great deal of time to download them all individually. 3) 800 aircraft liveries provided on disc, with link to download 100's more. 4) Exclusive PixelClassics installation guide on how to install the main simulator, bonus aircraft/scenery, plus quick start guide. 5) Multiplatform edition include installs for both Windows PC and Mac OS X on the same disc. 6) 200+ PDF user manual. 7) Custom PixelClassics PC installation menu, giving easy access to installation, user manuals, email support and more. 8) All software is fully scanned 100% virus clean via three leading security programs, AVAST, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes. Some people do not feel comfortable with downloads which are open to viruses and malware if not downloaded from original source, and this is one very good reason why some prefer to purchase a disc based version over free download. 9) Professionally designed and printed discs. 10) Full after sale support is provided. While there are support forums, any help there is voluntary and therefore you are not guaranteed to receive help, where as I am obliged to help and happy to do so. I answer all messages within 24h Mon-Fri, and continue to help until a suitable solution is found. PixelClassics
Question: I just bought this game, can i make a digital copy of it so i can play it on my gaming laptop that has no cd rom
Answer: Hello Thank you for your question. Yes simply copy the whole content of the installation disc to a USB memory stick and install from there. Alternatively message me directly and I can send you a download link. Kind regards, Dean

User questions & answers

Question: Does the throttle work on twin engine aircraft such as the a
Answer: Yes. In flight sims if you assign the throttle axis to the throttle input in game, the throttle should operate all engines together like any other throttle. Ive tested it in Xplane. If you want to fly a twin engine plane and control the throttles separately (for aiding in steering on the ground and things like that), you need to use a key binding for the seperate throttle inputs or just drag it with the mouse pointer. You could always assign then to the seperate axises on the throttle but that might be awkard. I use those for prop advance, mixture ect.But for normal flying it works fine.
Question: How is this joystick secured to the desk? It seems like with that small base it would slide around a lot especially with the rudder controls
Answer: Like Will answered, there are four suction cups on the bottom of both the stick and throttle that, on *some* desks, will work very well (smooth surfaces like glass are best, but an ikea or wooden desk might be hit or miss). With very aggressive joystick movements the base can come up off the desk. Myself personally have not had any issue with it sliding from the rudder/yaw though!Beyond that there are four rubber "feet" that grip fairly well for sliding, however that isn't the problem I had with them. My issue is that the base will "rock" up off the desk with hard throttle input because it's kind of sticky when it's brand new (at least mine was). I rectified this by taking it apart and removing some of the silicon grease used. This loosened it up more than the adjuster on the side allowed for and it's very comfortable now. I also removed the "bump" in it while I was at it, and now the whole thing works perfectly for me.I should add that there are two holes on each base that would allow for a screw or bolt to pass through. Would be rock solid that way if you want to mount them to something!
Question: What are the individual footprint dimensions for each (L x W
Answer: both sticks have the same footprint which is about 6.75" X 6.75"
Question: Can you run a helicopter simulation with these controls? If so, what is a good helicoptor simulator program? Thanks
Answer: HOTAS works pretty good for helicopter controls (I've only played ARMA though) but I'd recommend removing the "bumps" in the throttle. It's very easy to do, completely reversible, and helps a ton for helicopter flight! I'd also recommend removing a little of the silicon grease used to lubricated the throttle, as this will help loosen it up more. Cheers!https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=115981

Answer: It works great with Elite Dangerous. I have used it for about 2 months. Unfortunately, my number 3 button and the right hat switch stopped working. I used neither switch very much. I'm awaiting a response from Logitech to see if they will replace the stick.
Question: Approximately what is the twist (yaw) range, in real-world degrees? And the pitch/roll range
Answer: The joystick's handle itself twists approximately 15 degrees to either side for yaw, angles appx. 40 degrees (side to side) for roll, -pitches (forward/down) at appx 45 degrees and +pitches (backwards/up) at 30-35 degrees. What those motions will correspond to will really depend on the application in which they are used. Most flight games have advanced control settings that will let you tailor the response of the aircraft to the range of motion of the stick in advanced or personalized control set up menus.
Question: does anyone know if this is compatible with the online game WarThunder
Answer: yes, warthunder even has a preset for this the stick.
Question: Has anyone tryed it on the game Star Citizen
Answer: You should check out Thrustmaster T.16000M. You can try running dual joysticks too for SC, like two of Thrustmaster T.16000M or combine one T.16000M with this Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work with Xbox one
Answer: don't know. don't have xbox one. my connections are h.o.t.a.s. flight controls. however, if xbox has external controls connections you might be able to use the chair. be sure to research the connectivity first.
Question: Will this work eaqually as well for a racing/driving simulator
Answer: Yes it would. There are others that are just racing, but this one has the removable center pad.
Question: What is the approximate seating height
Answer: The approximate seat height goes from !8” in the front to 16” in the back.
Question: Does the center control rod and front tray detach
Answer: Yes. The Center Bar comes out so the two side panels can be used for the HOTAS instead. I use this for an "Elite" space simulator myself. ;)

About Playseat

The first time Fernando Smit - founder and president of Playseat - thought about building a racing chair, it was because he wanted a better way to play racing games. Based on his experience as race driver, he built his very own racing chair with the wheel at the right height and the pedals at the right distance, by using an old bucket seat. To make sure it was usable by others, this first version was already adjustable. Famous race drivers - such as world champion F1 driver Sebastian Vettel! - use Playseat gaming chairs to train, which of course is a really nice way to be promoted.
