13 best starter telescopes
Starter telescopes, also known as beginner telescopes, are designed to introduce individuals, especially newcomers to astronomy and stargazing, to the wonders of the night sky. These telescopes are typically user-friendly and more affordable than advanced models. Here's what you should know about starter telescopes:
Basic Design: Starter telescopes often feature a simple and straightforward design to make them easy to use for beginners. They usually consist of an optical tube, a mount or tripod, and eyepieces.
Affordability: One of the key features of starter telescopes is their affordability. They are priced to be accessible to those who are just getting started in astronomy or have a limited budget.
Aperture Size: Aperture size refers to the diameter of the primary lens or mirror in the telescope. In starter telescopes, the aperture is generally smaller compared to more advanced models. While this limits the telescope's ability to gather light, it's sufficient for basic celestial observations.
Mounts: Starter telescopes often come with simple altazimuth or equatorial mounts. These mounts allow users to point the telescope at celestial objects and track their motion across the sky.
Eyepieces: These telescopes typically include a few eyepieces with varying magnifications. Users can interchange these eyepieces to adjust the telescope's magnification and field of view for different objects in the sky.
Portability: Many starter telescopes are designed to be portable and lightweight, making them easy to transport to different stargazing locations.
Ease of Use: Beginner telescopes are designed with ease of use in mind. They often come with user-friendly instructions and may include features like finderscopes to help users locate objects in the sky.
Limitations: While starter telescopes are excellent for beginners, they do have limitations. Their smaller apertures may limit their ability to observe faint and distant celestial objects in detail. However, they are well-suited for observing the Moon, planets, and brighter deep-sky objects.
Educational Tools: Many starter telescopes are sold as part of educational kits and may include guides or resources to help users learn about astronomy and telescope operation.
Upgradeability: Some beginner telescopes are designed to be upgradeable, allowing users to enhance their optical performance by swapping out eyepieces or adding accessories.
Starter telescopes are a great way for individuals interested in astronomy to get started with stargazing and celestial observation. They provide an accessible entry point into the hobby without requiring a significant financial investment. As beginners gain experience and knowledge, they may choose to upgrade to more advanced telescopes with larger apertures for more detailed and advanced observations.

User questions & answers
Question: | I cannot see thru the telescope even after taking all caps off it is stil blank image |
Answer: | We are having the same issue. It’s been properly set up but even after allowing it to come to temperatures outside, there is nothing we’re seeing. We’ve adjusted magnification, tried different lens, still blank. And yes, all the caps are off too. I have a curious, yet disappointment kiddo on my hands. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |
Question: | I can’t get the the telescope to lock in place when we find something to look at, how is this done |
Answer: | You have to use the little knob that looks like a T and also the long handle bar (you turn the handle bar right to tighten and left to loosen. They are both apart of the stand. |
Question: | Is this user friendly as described ? Since im a beginner is this the right fit for me |
Answer: | I set it up in 5 minutes. I observed the Moon, Venus and Cassini twin stars (actually quad) with in 30 minutes on 25 mm. I have never owned a telescope in my life. The instructions are pictures describing what part goes where under them. How to set up your phone is a bit of a mess but I understood and decided to address that later. I was too excited to see Venus, and then sad when it looked like a big star, lol. There is another way to set it up to see even closer images, so I’ll be experimenting. I want a bigger one now... lol 😂. I’m managing my expectations on the 3X with 10mm parts. I just want to see it all! |
Question: | Is this good for photographing an eagle 100 yards away |
Answer: | As long as the Eagle is stationary, yes. This comes with a 10mm and 25mm eyepiece. I think the 10mm would work. |

The AstroMaster 90AZ Refractor Telescope for adults and kids to be used together is a user-friendly and powerful telescope engineered with a lightweight frame and fully-coated optics. Our Celestron telescope features a fully-coated 90mm primary mirror. It also features an AstroMaster Altazimuth manual mount that includes a panning handle that allows you to make precision adjustments to easily follow celestial objects as they appear to move across the night sky. The two eyepieces combine with the 90mm aperture optics to produce amazing magnification. The 20mm eyepiece offers 50x magnification, while the 10mm eyepiece provides up-close views up to 100x. This allows you to focus on distant objects with amazing clarity. We have designed the AstroMaster series of telescopes for kids to enjoy exploring the cosmos with adult supervision. Superior materials provide crystal-clear, bright images of Saturn, Jupiter, and the Moon, along with deep space objects including brighter galaxies and nebulae. You can also use this telescope for viewing land-based objects during daytime hours. The telescope is quick to set up and requires no tools. The kit includes a rugged, pre-assembled tripod with 1.25-inch steel tube legs, which provide a stable platform for hours of safe use. As a bonus, download our BONUS Starry Night Basic Edition astronomy software for interactive sky simulations, a 36,000-object database, and printable sky maps. It’s the best way to learn about the night sky, download printable sky maps, research thousands of celestial objects, and plan your next observing session. Buy with confidence from the world’s #1 telescope brand, based in California since 1960. You’ll also receive a two-year warranty and unlimited access to technical support from our team of US-based experts.
Celestron’s Astromaster 90AZ refractor telescope is a good choice for anyone who wants a dual purpose telescope. With more than double the light gathering power of 60mm starter scopes, it’s a great introduction to astronomy and it can double as a long range spotting scope. Bigger and more impressive than it looks in pictures, the Astromaster 90AZ is an adult size telescope that stands nearly five feet high and weighs about 20 pounds. With it’s fully illustrated quick set up guide, the telescope is easy to assemble, and the package includes an erect image prism, high and low power eyepieces, and astronomy software for your PC.
Refractors are known for their crisp, high contrast views of the Moon and planets and the Astromaster 90 delivers sharp views right out of the box. The low power 20mm eyepiece (50X magnification) nicely frames the moon, while the high power 10mm eyepiece (100X magnification) delivers a crisp close up image full of detail. The sharp Achromatic optics of the Astromaster 90AZ show me memorable views night after night. On a moonless night I like the way the 20mm eyepiece frames the ghostly glow of the Orion Nebula. Zooming in with the 10mm eyepiece, I can easily pick out all four stars of the Orion Nebula’s embedded quadruple star the Trapezium.
The AstroMaster 90 AZ also features a newly designed Alt-Azimuth mount and tripod. The tripod comes fully assembled, and the telescope simply clamps into a standard dovetail. This new tripod seems reasonably solid, I had no trouble focusing on the Moon and stars even with the high power eyepiece. An Alt-azimuth mount, of course, is best used at low to medium powers because it does not track the motion of the stars. As soon as you get the Moon centered in the eyepiece, it starts drifting toward the edge-this is caused by rotation of the Earth. Celestial objects will stay in the low power field of view for three or four minutes, but with a high power eyepiece they may disappear in a minute or less.
Celestron’s AstroMaster 90 AZ is one entry level telescope that offers great views during the daytime as well as at night. The sharp optics produce a right side up image, the mount is easy to use, and the included planetarium software helps you find planets in the night sky. --Jeff Phillips

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use another tripod I have a bigger sturdier and has wheels |
Answer: | Yes and you should! The tripod is the weakest link on this product. This isn't a mark against the company, as the tripod is often the weakest link in any optics set up. I am not sure why your tripod has wheels or how that would benefit, since orienting objects are easier to do using a stable base and the spotting scope attachment along an axis, but hey, follow your heart! |
Question: | How do you attach the cell phone holder? It is not even mentioned in the instructions |
Answer: | There is a part of the cell phone holder that twists. As you twist clockwise or counter clockwise the opening widens I order for the eyepiece to fit in it. Once you are able to fit the cellphone holder on the eye piece you tighten the twisting part to fasten the cellphone holder in place. I hope that helps. |
Question: | Does it can see the moon |
Answer: | Yes it can does see the moon.... Really it just magnifies the light that comes into your eyeball which your brain interprets as the moon. |
Question: | What all can you see with this telescope |
Answer: | The parking lot across the street was all ilI could ever see. It is absolutely trash. The company must be giving all these great reviews |

User questions & answers
Question: | My viewfinder is upside down. Is this standard |
Answer: | Hi Frances, Thanks for your interest in a Qurious Telescope Kit! We pack all of our kits with maximum fun in mind. This 1650 starter kit is actually a perfect kit for that age. The instructions and activity guide, pictures etc. may need some help from an adult depending on reading/comprehension level, but learning how to use a telescope is a great bonding activity! Everything in the kit was designed to be fun, and educational for elementary aged kids while encouraging safe play. This kit has an added hand-held compass, monthly lunar phase guide, year long star chart, reusable, glow in the dark solar system stickers, and an activity guide with lots of different challenges for Space fun at home, even on stormy nights when a telescope can't be used. However, all telescopes do require patience (and adherence to safety warnings!) to learn how to focus and use properly. Keep the need for patience and perserverance in mind when you order and receive your kit and you should be good to go. |
Question: | Does this telescope have coated lenses |
Answer: | Thanks for your interest in a Qurious Telescope kit. Our current telescope models have a maximum magnification of x66. Planets close enough to see will be visible as small halos. To see planets clearly, you'll need a telescope with about x200 magnification and illumination. Our telescope kits are intended to help kids learn how to use and get comfortable with scientific tools, develop patience and scientific testing methods, focusing skills and moon tracking/observation. Hope that answers your question and thanks again for your interest in Qurious! |
Question: | Why can i not see anythinga through the main lense |
Answer: | I’m still trying to figure out myself how to see out of this telescope!! It’s very nice well made but I think I need to work on it more!! The stars most definitely |
Question: | Which eyepiece to phone adapter do you recommend? i'd like to take pictures with my iphone 7 plus. thanks in advance for your time |
Answer: | I would NOT waste my money on a different tripod for this telescope. It is more of a pirate monocular than a telescope. NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURE OR DESCRIPTION!!! |

ABOUT MAGNIFICATION
- The focal length of the eyepiece, combined with the focal length of the telescope, determine the magnification power.
- To calculate the power of your telescope with any particular eyepiece, simply divide the focal length of the telescope (400mm) by the focal length of the eyepiece (indicated in “mm” on the eyepiece collar).
- For example, when you use the eyepiece H20mm with this telescope, the magnification will be 20X.
ERECTING EYEPIECE/BARLOW LENS/MOON MIRROR
- Normally, a telescope offers a upside down image, the 1.5X Erecting eyepiece not only increases the magnification of telescope 1.5 times but also correct the direction of the image.
- The 3X Barlow lens can triple the magnification factor provided by the telescope.
- Because there is great deal of reflected glare when the full moon is observed, the addition of the moon mirror will remove this glare and make it possible to sharpen surface details. The moon mirror is screwed into the eyepiece when you use it.
HOW TO SET UP AND USE
- Open the Tripod.
- Screw the Aiming control into the tripod mount.
- Place the Telescope tube onto the tripod mount and lock the tube.
- Locate the Finder scope onto the Telescope tube.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you attach a camera to this telescope |
Answer: | How do get info on camera attachment |
Question: | Is it infrared |
Answer: | Nope |
Question: | Is it equipped for astrophotography |
Answer: | You can't use this to take long astronomic exposures because the planet or nebula (or whatever) will move during the exposure. To take long exposures, you need two things: an equatorial mount and a clock drive. However, you can take great shots of the moon or other really bright object. The moon is so bright, a fast shutter speed works fine. |
Question: | Is this telescope easy to travel with |
Answer: | Not really. It needs a good size case for it. Plus I would not trust airport to cate for it. If in your car or RV it would fair much better. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this scope be used as a spotting scope for bird watching |
Answer: | Excellent for bird-watching. At 20x, it's fine. At 40x (long distance) you may want a strudier tripod, and because it's daylight, you can look through the smaller 42mm hole (take off the little cap) in the dust cap and that will improve the sharpness at high power. If you want a better spotting scope, simply buy a fancy wide-angle/high-performance 1.25 eyepiece (super-plossl, etc), around 15 mm focal length. |
Question: | You say that any tripod that I use for photography should work. Does that mean that I can screw my tripod head into the telescope |
Answer: | Yes. As others have said, the tripod that comes with the telescope is reallllly flimsy. There are a couple of screw holes on the bottom of the telescope. I was able to attache the telescope to my other tripod using the detachable head on the tripod. |
Question: | I'm a real beginner/plan to purchase this for my son so we can both explore the night sky, etc. Is it really easy to setup?/How long will it take |
Answer: | The scope is really good for beginners and it is easy to set up. As others have said the the included tripod is small for portability and not very stable. If used fully "retracted" on the hood of a car for example, it's OK. I've used it with a Celestron 7.5MM eyepiece and a 2x barlow lens and it can still resolve the rings of Saturn on a clear night. It's not designed for that kind of magnification but for an inexpensive scope with simple lenses I was impressed. I wouldn't recommend trying that though until you have some practice on focus, finding objects in the sky, and purchasing a heavy duty camera tripod. You must remember even with the highest power eyepieces, which you only want to consider using for viewing planets, objects are really small which is due to it's 400mm focal length. Overall it's WAY better than spending 40-50 dollars on a cheap toy at the local discount store. Another good option comparable to this is the Orion 76mm Fun Scope. It's really only for table top use but it's easy to swivel up/down left/right. It is a reflector though and images don't appear as crisp in my opinion. You'll find out that half the quality of a telescope is how good the tripod or mounting set up is. For the price you can't go wrong with this scope. I own several telescopes from computer driven to large reflectors and still grab this for quick views of Orions belt, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and star clusters like the double cluster and the Pleiades. Just to add to an already long answer, I added an inexpensive laser object finder (similar to the Celestron Star Finder) instead of the mostly useless viewfinder. It makes it ten times easier to point the scope at objects you're trying to look at and it doesn't take much modifications to get it screwed to the scope tube or stuck on with foam tape. Your son will thank you! |
Question: | can i see with my left eye |
Answer: | Only if you look at objects on the left....use right eye for objects on the right side....if its straight above you , you can use both eyes. |
