Question: All you need is a soldering iron, flux, and solder nothing fancy
Answer: They include solder. You do not use separate flux. You need a pencil type 25-40 watt soldering iron. You should have a digital volt meter (even a cheep one will be OK). If you have a signal generator and an oscilloscope it would be of great help if you want to follow the training portion of the manual but they are not absolutely necessary - - I did not have a scope or signal generator and was able to successfully complete this kit. You should have had some practice soldering PC boards before starting this kit.

Answer: This kit contains small parts, and soldering is required, with supervision, and comfort with a soldering iron and plenty of room, I would recommend age 10 as a minimum, but depends on the skill level of the builder. Question: Is this doable for a beginner who has never soldered? The other elenco kits just seem too basic
Answer: If you never soldered, I would not recommend doing that. The kit is relatively easy to solder, and it's doable, but most likely you will need to calibrate your hand on something simpler and the basic kits are inexpensive. As a beginner, the hardest (and funnier) part is to troubleshoot the kit and when I started assembling it, I had one bad solder at the first section. Have fun!

Question: will these slides work with any microscope? We got our son a die-cast microscope set for Christmas & just wanted to include some more slides with it
Answer: Yes, but set lower expectations.., this little kit is great for beginners and will fit with just about any standardish viewing stage. The slides are plastic and full of artifacts/micro bubbles. Your not going to get better than about 600x before it's a problem. It is a good starter kit for learning about the very basics and simple slide prep but you might consider supplementing with a premade slide set to demonstrate what actual results should look like. The seaMonkeys are fun but the magnified container will not fit under a scope...you should find some depressed slides (ones with a little dip for a drop of water) to view live hatchlings. Sadly a 5 pack is like 10 bucks but you will enjoy a lot more viewings at high magnification of many more kid friendly things with those type of slides. Good luck!

Answer: I think all Elenco slides should be able to work with their brand equipment. I don't own the 12 slide with 36 specimens but they look like the same slide that came with this one. Keep in mind that a real microscope is far better than this one although this is great for field work. I would recommend a larger and stronger microscope for your slides and this for outdoor study that you could afford to lose or damage if that should be the case. Hope this helps.
