The T-34, the mainstay tank of the Red Army during WWII, has been described as the most important weapon to help Russia win the war in the East. In the 1942 time period, the STZ factory in Stalingrad produced T-34 tanks that had such characteristics as steel road wheels, a ‘chisel' turret mantlet and interlocking hull plates. The T-34 tank was so respected that the Wehrmacht, desperate for more armored vehicles, even enlisted it into German service where it was known as the Pz.Kpfw.T-34-747(r). Cyber-Hobby's White Box previously released a 1/35 scale kit of such a captured T-34 from the STZ factory, but now Dragon is releasing a face-lifted kit that will be far more accessible to mainstream modelers. One feature of this kit is the inclusion of a genuine German turret bin installed on the turret rear! German crewmen found it necessary to do so because of the limited space available in the two-man turret. Dragon has done a fine job of replicating in 1/35 scale the characteristics peculiar to this T-34-747(r) STZ Mod.1942 type of tank. Of course, a feature is the aforementioned so-called ‘Rommel Kist' turret bin. This model is simply bulging with detail and there are photo-etched parts to represent fine elements. There are numerous slide-molded parts and the tank is shod in Magic Tracks that assemble quickly and easily. To finish it off, the box includes an interesting set of decals from Cartograf, including markings for 5.Panzer-Division, a unit that utilized this Russian tank. Ambitious modelers are now able to assemble a German Russian tank directly from the box!

Dragon's Black Label series is proving popular tanks to its coverage of out-of-the-ordinary subjects that are normally not available as regular plastic kits. Black Label previously released a kit of a unique WWII design from the USA – an M6A1 Heavy Tank, a type that dated back to late 1940. Now that particular kit (Item No.6789) has been joined by a 1/35 scale kit of its close relative, the M6. The 57.4-tonne M6 was designed as a tank able to respond to Germany's all-dominating Panzers that had previously swept through Europe in the Blitzkrieg, and approval to produce four prototypes was given in February 1941. The type proved unsatisfactory in testing, however, and in the end only eight M6, twelve M6A1 and 20 M6A2 tanks were built by Baldwin from 1942-44. The M6 had a crew of six and was armed with an M7 76mm gun, M6 37mm gun and no less than five machine guns. The M6 was distinguished by its cast hull. The Black Label M6 model sensibly makes use of relevant parts from its sister kit, though the hull is obviously quite different. Whereas the M6A1 had a welded hull, the M6 had a cast hull, and thus a brand new upper hull appears in the box. Furthermore, this upper hull is produced as a single-piece item to ensure complete accuracy. Indeed, the kit widely uses slide-molded components thanks to Dragon's technical know-how, making it easy to put together. It also features DS tracks for the sake of convenience. The M6 tanks produced in the early 1940s never left US soil as the design was considered anachronistic, but Black Label now makes the type available to all in this modern age!.

The newest Panzer IV plastic kit from Dragon is an Ausf. D featuring a 5cm KwK39 L/60 main gun. Production of the had commenced in 1939, with some 229 tanks produced altogether, these mounting the short-barreled 7.5cm KwK37 L/24 gun. However, this kit features something different, a variant of the weapon used on the 5cm PaK38 towed gun, which was tested on a Panzer IV hull in 1941. It was considered a potential solution to the difficulties that German tank guns experienced penetrating the armor of British Matilda tanks in the Battle of France.

One of Dragon's legendary kits from the early days was a 1/35 scale rendition of the Soviet ISU-152. This was a monstrous kit and it has now been updated and modified to create an even more amazing ISU-152-2. The 47.3-tonne ISU-152 was a heavy vehicle that served in WWII in the role of a self-propelled gun, assault gun and tank destroyer. Originally based on the KV-1 chassis, it was adapted to the IS tank chassis and duly entered production in December 1943. It operated with a crew of five and some 3,242 vehicles were built up till 1947. On the ISU-152-2 (also known as Object 247), the original 152.4mm ML-20S gun was replaced by a BL-10 high-powered L48.5 gun in a prototype that dated from August 1944. This 7.393m-long weapon had an 18,000m range. Although the actual ISU-152-2 type didn't enter service with this gun, later versions of the ISU-152 remained in service right up till the 1970s. Dragon has done a splendid job of replicating the brute characteristics of this ISU-152-2 type designed for the Soviet military. The ungainly design – with the massively long gun barrel protruding from a heavily armored hull – has been perfectly captured. The 1/35 scale kit is based on Dragon's earlier ISU-152, using some of the finely detailed components from that kit, but obviously with a completely new BL-10 gun barrel. Also new are the associated mantlet and muzzle brake. Moreover, it comes with Magic Tracks for an easier assembly. Although it might seem imbalanced, this assault gun has a powerful outline and it exudes strength. For fans of Soviet armor, this ISU-152-2 is a welcome and impressive release from Dragon.

Question: | What Dragon figure set is included with the building |
Answer: | There are 2 pages of setup menus available if you hold down the power button for about 1/2 second after powering the device up it will take you to those screens. Hold power button down again to shift between the two screens of options. I have poked around but have yet to figure out how to disable the power up beep. You can get a beep with each heartbeat and set other variables such as brightness but not the power up beep. If you figure out how to let everybody know. Email the seller if all else fails. Good luck. |
