I was raised on mysteries and thrillers. But it wasn’t until I was a high school senior that I read a book with a main character who was Native American like me. It was also the year a friend mentioned a new guy at her school who was just my type. Although I never met him, it was later revealed he was actually an undercover narcotics officer. I recall wondering what would’ve happened if we had met? Or, rather, what if he needed my help? Why would an undercover cop need the help of a young Ojibwe woman?

The idea simmered for twenty years. During that time, I worked in Indian education, and it was a struggle to find books that reflected our kids. Fewer than 1% of books for children and teens feature a Native main character. I decided to write the Indigenous Nancy Drew thriller I wished for as a teen. I had to figure out why a young Ojibwe woman might feel compelled to help with an undercover investigation in her own tribal community. It took me ten years to write the story.

What topic did you enjoy researching the most?

The most enjoyable research was learning about traditional Ojibwe medicines. My cousin Sammy told me about the time she had an earache and poured pee into her ear. Urine is sterile and can be substituted for hydrogen peroxide.

The most surreal research was learning how to make meth. I attended a police academy class on the methods of production and about identifying clandestine meth labs.

What do you hope readers will take away from reading Firekeeper’s Daughter?

I hope readers take away a more nuanced view of tribal communities like mine. There are too few stories about and by Native Americans. We are still here and have dynamic stories to tell. I hope it helps those who want to reconnect with their communities, cultural teachings, and language. Most of all, I hope teens find an aspect of the story that resonates with them.

Answer:	No. The box is not sealed. It is a very well protected box meaning it very durable. There is no plastic wrap around the box. When shipped it is surrounded with bubble wrap and boxed tightly keeping doll from rattling. I have not received damaged Silk-stone dolls at all.
