14 best 3m auto darkening welding helmets
3M is a well-known manufacturer that produces a range of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety products, including auto-darkening welding helmets. These helmets are designed to provide protection to welders during welding and related tasks. Here's what you can expect from 3M auto-darkening welding helmets:
Safety and Protection: 3M welding helmets are designed to protect the welder's face and eyes from the intense light and heat generated during welding. They feature a special auto-darkening filter (ADF) that automatically darkens the helmet's lens when the welding arc is struck. This technology helps to reduce eye strain and the risk of arc flash injuries.
Auto-Darkening Technology: The auto-darkening feature in 3M welding helmets means that the lens automatically adjusts its shade level to protect the welder's eyes from the bright welding arc. When the arc is not active, the lens typically remains in a lighter state, providing better visibility. When the arc is initiated, the lens darkens to a shade that is appropriate for the welding process being used.
Variable Shade Settings: Many 3M welding helmets allow welders to adjust the shade level according to their specific welding application. This flexibility is essential because different welding processes and materials may require different levels of shading for optimal visibility and protection.
Comfort and Fit: 3M places a strong emphasis on providing comfortable and ergonomic designs in their welding helmets.Adjustable headgear and padding ensure that the helmet fits securely and can be worn comfortably for extended periods, reducing fatigue.
Durability: These helmets are typically built to withstand the rigors of welding environments. They are constructed from durable materials that can resist sparks, spatter, and heat, helping to prolong the life of the helmet.
Respiratory Protection: Some 3M welding helmets may also offer optional respiratory protection features, such as built-in powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs) or the ability to attach respiratory equipment for additional safety in environments with welding fumes.
Visibility: 3M welding helmets often feature large viewing windows that provide a clear line of sight, allowing welders to see their workpiece clearly and accurately.
It's important to note that 3M offers a range of welding helmet models with varying features and specifications, so welders can choose the one that best suits their needs and budget. These helmets are commonly used in professional welding and industrial settings to ensure the safety and comfort of welders while they perform their tasks.

The 3M Speedglas Auto Darkening Filter 9100XXi offers the same large viewing area as our 3M Speedglas ADF 9100XX. But thanks to improved optics, the 9100XXi ADF allows you to more readily recognize colors as compared to our other models.
From the Manufacturer
The 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet 9100 with Auto Darkening Filter 9100XXi helps provide professional-grade eye and face protection from debris and harmful radiation while offering better visibility. With improved optics, the 3M Speedglas Auto Darkening Filter 9100XXi allows you to more readily recognize colors as compared to our other models. Welders will see a view that is less green. Colors, shades, tone as well as light and dark contrasts will all stand out with more vivid detail. Many welders will find they have better control of the weld puddle with a view that appears lighter, brighter and more realistic. This may help you focus on your welding set-up, welding technique, precision grinding, and inspection of completed welds.
Switch Between Welding and Grinding in just 2 to 3 Seconds -- all with Your Gloves On
This helmet also comes with the 3M Speedglas Silver Front Panel 9100XXi, which offers the convenience of switching between welding mode and shade 3 grinding mode with a simple "gloves-on" touch of an external button on the silver front panel. There is no need to remove the helmet to change these settings. Memory modes allow accessing one of two pre-set welding modes. Both memory modes have an individual setting for dark shade, light to dark switching sensitivity and dark-to-light delay. An instant "Grab and Go" feature automatically turns the welding filter on to your most recent welding setting whenever you pick up the helmet. To save on power, it automatically shuts down after a period of inactivity.
Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades of shades 5, 8, 9 through 13, and a light shade of 3. With a viewing area of 2.8 inches high x 4.2 inches wide (72 mm x 107 mm), the 9100XXi provides the largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and an expansive field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction. Three arc detection sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. The lens then switches from light to dark shade in approximately 0.1 milliseconds (1/10,000 of a second), giving the welder an instant transition from light to dark shade while maintaining an optimal view for torch placement and weld puddle control. When the weld is complete, the filter automatically returns to light shade 3 with a delay of approximately 40-250 milliseconds, allowing almost immediate inspection of the weld pool and preparation for the next weld. Exhaust vents readily direct your exhaled air out of the helmet, helping to reduce heat, humidity and fogging of the welding filter.
The auto darkening filter can help reduce the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which boosts productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature can also reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of torch placement. The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,000 hours. The two Cr2030 3V lithium batteries that power the Auto-Darkening filter are easily accessible and replaceable, extending the helmet life.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this actually the 9100xxi? The second picture shows the 9100v welding filter, the first picture shows the newer shell however |
Answer: | Yes, you only get one diamond pad. |
Question: | Does it come with additional inside and outside protection plates? Sweatband and storage bag |
Answer: | They will last a very long time due to the fact that they ate diamond encrusted |
Question: | Is this hood okay for mig and stick as well as tig |
Answer: | I don't own the Bosch tool to answer your question. |
Question: | Does it have the side windows |
Answer: | Richard, My short answer is "yes". The MM910 sanding pad uses diamond dust for its surface; therefore, the expensive price. It is designed for "grinding" cement, plaster or mortar. Your situation might call for conventional sanding pads (MM70W or MM70P) The MM910 attaches to the Multi-Max tool through a MM14 hook and loop pad (think Velcro). Some companies make after-market accessories that retrofit to other brands so you have another avenue to find cheaper accessories. As an example, some company in China might make a universal accessory that fits Rockwell, Dremel or Porter-Cable because they all use the same layout for attachment. Regards, JLC |

Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc
The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades 5, 8, 9 through 13, and a light shade of 3. With a viewing area of 1.8 inches high x 3.7 inches wide (45 mm x 93 mm), the 9100V provides the third largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and a field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction.
Three sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. Exhaust vents readily direct your exhaled air out of the helmet, helping to reduce heat, humidity and fogging of the welding filter and protective visor.
The auto darkening filter reduces the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which can boost productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature also can reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of electronic placement. This, in turn, can also reduce the need for grinding and rework, saving time, effort and money. The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,800 hours. The two Cr2030 3V lithium batteries that power the Auto-Darkening filter are easily accessible and replaceable, extending the helmet life.
Flip-up design eliminates the need to remove the helmet for non-welding tasks
Designed for ultimate worker convenience, this welding helmet allows you to position the auto darkening filter down for welding and flip it up for other tasks. When the auto darkening filter is flipped up, eyes and face are still protected from debris, chips, dust, sparks and other objects by a clear protective visor, which is curved to maximize peripheral vision. You get a clear, 8” x 4.25” (17 x 10 cm) view, which is enables for precision grinding and inspection in low light conditions. This wide field of view allows workers to see better and maintain high productivity on the job. Convenience is a main benefit of the flip-up welding helmet because it allows workers to handle non-welding tasks without removing the helmet or supplementing an additional face shield. For added worker protection, a spark- and spatter-resistant fabric head cover is standard on all 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet Series 9100 FX models.
Welding Protection with Excellent Optics, Wider Front Views and Side Windows
The 3M™ Speedglas™ Auto-Darkening Filters Series 9100 offers uniform shading and minimal distortion across the entire filter viewing area. By selecting the right setting for each task, you help reduce eye strain and improve the quality of every weld. Any shade can be “locked-in.” For example, you can lock in the light state shade 3 for grinding. The 9100 series also includes an exclusive, innovative “tack welding comfort mode” which can help reduce eye strain.
One Helmet Works for Three Types of Welding
This fully assembled welding helmet with ADF (Auto Darkening Filter) offers sensitivity adjustments for use with most Stick (arc welding), MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding applications. The welding helmet uses an auto darkening filter that can be adjusted for different shades based on the welding amperage.
The ultimate in comfort with a headband that shapes for a customized fit
3M™ Speedglas Series 9100 FX helmets feature highly adjustable, ergonomically designed head suspension system featuring:
- Two adjustable crown straps for increased stability and weight distribution
- Padded front headband designed to evenly distribute pressure
- Swivel-mounted smooth ratchet system for simple, precise tightening and ergonomic fit
- Snap adjustment of nine different helmet angles
- Large knobs for simple adjustment of “prep” and “parking” pivot positions, even while wearing gloves
- Fits head sizes 6.25 to 8 (50 to 64 cm) approximately
The outside of the human head is lined with nerves, arteries, and acupuncture points: applying pressure to some of these spots can make a person feel fatigued. The headband of the Speedglas welding helmet series 9100 is designed to specifically avoid these vulnerable areas. By providing multiple adjustments and combinations, the helmet can be tailored to fit personal preferences and comfort settings. Less pressure, ¬ and a well adjusted personal fit – means more comfort, all day long.
The helmet also offers greater comfort when raised. Lifted into the raised position, the helmet’s “high point” is lower than many other helmets. From a design standpoint, that means keeping the helmet as close as possible to your head. Because the helmet is more balanced, the headband does not need to be tightened as much, helping to further increase wearing comfort. Adjustment of the helmet is easy. The smooth up-and-down pivot action can be “locked” in the up position – a light pull lowers the helmet back down again.
Versatile Eye and Face Protection for Welders
Welding helmets help protect the eyes and face in numerous ways. For starters, the helmet helps to block welding sparks and spatter from reaching the eyes and face. The helmet also helps protect the eyes from exceptionally bright light and rapid changes in brightness, which can both stress and harm eyes. Without protection, eyes can be temporarily or permanently injured by the intensity of light produced by welding. Eyes also have difficulty adjusting to rapid brightness changes while welding in dark locations, which can be both a productivity and safety issue. The helmet’s design allows for compatibility with select disposable welding respirators, including the 3M™ 8515, 8212, 8214, 8512, and 8514 Particulate Welding Respirators, to help provide respiratory protection for applications where metal fumes may be present. This durable and versatile welding helmet also meets the requirements of CSA Z94.3 and the high impact requirements of ANSI Z87.1-2010.

Answer: | Yes, this is a good option for welding outside, however any welding helmet with an autodarkening filter may be challenged with direct sunlight. Shielding your work area with a welding curtain is helpful. If that is not possible, you may want to consider one of the new passive lenses that are available for the 9100. Please contact the 3M Techline to further discuss at 800-243-4630. Thank you. |
Question: | can I use this hood with a hard hat instead of the ratchet with headband |
Answer: | I don't know much about the part numbers, but this model does have side windows. Every 9000 series hood has them, I believe. |
Question: | Can you attach a hard hat to it |
Answer: | Yes. You may consider one of 3M particulate welding respirators (e.g. #8214, #8212) or a 6500 series reusable half-face respirator and a #2097 filter (filters out particulates and nuisance welding fumes). Please contact the 3M Techline for assistance with respirator selection at 800-243-4630. Thank you. |
Question: | Is this solar & battery or just battery |

With a viewing area of 2.8 inches high x 4.2 inches wide (72 mm x 107 mm), the 9100XX provides the largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and an expansive field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction.
Three sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck.
The auto darkening filter reduces the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which helps to boost productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature also can also reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of torch placement. This, in turn, can reduce the need for grinding and rework, saving time, effort and money. The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,000 hours. The two Cr2030 3V lithium batteries that power the Auto-Darkening filter are easily accessible and replaceable, extending the helmet life.
For starters, the helmet blocks welding sparks and spatter from reaching the eyes and face. The helmet also protects the eyes from exceptionally bright light and rapid changes in brightness, which can both stress and harm eyes. Without protection, eyes can be temporarily or permanently injured by the intensity of light produced by welding. Eyes also have difficulty adjusting to rapid brightness changes while welding in dark locations, which can be both a productivity and safety issue.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this helmet have a solar panel to help keep the battery charged |
Answer: | Yup, I've had mine two years, daily user and still the same batteries. |
Question: | Does this hood have an external switch to change between welding and grinding mode |
Answer: | The hood doesn’t have an external switch to change between welding and grinding, it has an internal press button type switch. You have to raise the hood a bit to select weld or grind because the switch is located at the bottom left on the inside front part of the hood. |
Question: | Does this helment has grinding mode |
Answer: | Yes it does. There a "Mode" button that switches between grinding and welding settings. |
Question: | How fast does it darken |
Answer: | Instantly, I have never been flash blasted once wearing this Jackson hood. There were even times where it annoyed me at where I was working because the lighting wasn't the best and if I angled the lens up even on the lowest settings towards the lights it would darken. It only happened in that very specific situation and outside of that one area it never happened. This is by far my personal favorite auto darkener. 10/10 for me. |

Its reduced weight feels lighter on your head and neck, and is easily adjusted to personal settings. The headband can be adjusted in size, allowing for an excellent fit for each individual user. Easy back and forth adjustments of helmet add to the comfort. The user can also tilt the helmet to the preferred angle. The narrowest helmet in the 3M Speedglas lineup, the SL helmet is a great option for many tight.
Quick and Light, Perfect for Fast Tasks
Using specialized manufacturing techniques, 3M has reduced the overall weight of this welding helmet by greatly reducing the weight of the auto-darkening filter. The helmet is also designed to stay light. Unlike other lightweight helmets that can absorb moisture and become heavy, the Speedglas™ welding helmet SL is made from a strong, non-absorbent material. The helmet also comes with a motion sensor that automatically turns on the welding filter when the helmet is picked up.
Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc
The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades of shades 8 through 12, and a light shade of 3. Two arc detection sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. The lens then switches from light to dark shade in approximately 0.1 milliseconds (1/10,000 of a second), giving the welder an almost instant transition from light to dark shade while maintaining an optimal view for torch placement and weld puddle control. When the weld is complete, the filter automatically returns to light shade 3 in 60-250 milliseconds, allowing quick inspection of the weld pool and preparation for the next weld.
The auto darkening filter reduces the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which can help increase productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature can also help reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of torch placement. This, in turn, can also help reduce the need for grinding and rework, saving time, effort and money.
Welding Protection with Excellent Optics and Wider Views
This helmet offers uniform shading and minimal distortion across the entire filter viewing area. By selecting the right setting for each task, you help reduce eye strain and improve the quality and production of every weld.
Versatile Eye and Face Protection for Welders
Welding helmets help protect the eyes and face in numerous ways. For starters, the helmet helps block the spatter of welding sparks and spatter produced during the welding process from reaching the eyes, face and head. Helping to protect the eyes from exceptionally bright light and rapid changes in brightness is another safety benefit of a welding helmet.
