Answer:	The jaws close shut tightly even when its not holding anything within the jaws. The tarp clips work very well with holding down the tarp / shade cloth material. I used them in conjunction to the grommets on the shade cloth to Better secure it to the foundation. We have horrible Bouts of Santa Anna winds. The clips helped the grommets from getting torn off the shade cloth during the windy conditions.
