When the kids are riding, I leave slack in the cable so it bottoms out about 20 feet from the end. They still clear the ground, but the rise then gently slows them before they hit the spring. When it is tight, they need to hang on because they swing when they hit the spring.

I can tell you that every detail, including the price (council does not have another (4# "American Felling Axe" at this price point), and the reviews attached to this product indicate that it is indeed the Velvicut. Ofcourse , if you are looking, you know about the Velvicut, so I will spare the details (see my review if you care). One thing I can tell you is, if you want a good alternative of the less expensive variety (no heirloom, but very effective, Council makes the 4# Felling Axe for the US Forest Service. A major difference, believe it or not (if you know, you'll believe it), is the quality of the handle, specifically the grain orientation. There is less attention to the detail and finish of the Forest Service version. However, I have seen retailers "grade" the surplus they obtain, typically pricing the hand picked at about $10 more than the random pick (around $50). Either one of these axes will get the job done (splurge for the hand-picked, and good luck locating the surplus).

Answer:	Jason, The overall design of the new Woodcraft axe is as close to flawless as I could possibly get. I am 6' 1" and about 180lbs. Swinging the axe and the overall cut is perfect. As far as comparison to the boy's axe, I would say this is more for bushcraft and camping related tasks. I personally would now go with a slightly longer handle, the 24" version of this axe. The reason being is just point of swing in relation to my height. As far as material, they are the same, so it's down to head design as well (which I prefer the woodcraft design) the wedge design loves to bind.
