14 best home smoke detector

A home smoke detector, also known as a smoke alarm, is a critical device designed to detect the presence of smoke or fire in a residential environment. These devices play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of occupants by providing early warning in the event of a fire. Here is what you need to know about home smoke detectors:

  1. Function:

    • The primary function of a home smoke detector is to alert occupants to the presence of smoke or fire by emitting a loud, audible alarm.
    • They work by continuously monitoring the air for the presence of smoke particles or by detecting a sudden increase in temperature, both of which can indicate a fire.
  2. Types:

    • There are two primary types of home smoke detectors:
      • Ionization Smoke Detectors: These detectors use a small amount of radioactive material to ionize the air between two electrically charged plates. When smoke enters the chamber, it disrupts the ionization process, triggering the alarm.
      • Photoelectric Smoke Detectors: These detectors use a light source (usually an LED) and a light sensor. When smoke particles enter the chamber, they scatter the light, causing the alarm to activate.
  3. Combination Detectors:

    • Some modern smoke detectors are combination detectors, incorporating both ionization and photoelectric technologies for increased sensitivity to various types of fires.
  4. Installation:

    • Smoke detectors are typically installed on the ceiling or high on the wall in key areas of the home, such as bedrooms, hallways, and common areas.
    • It's essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for proper placement and installation.
  5. Interconnected Alarms:

    • Interconnected smoke detectors are wired together so that if one detector detects smoke or fire, all detectors in the network will sound an alarm. This ensures that everyone in the home is alerted, even if they are in a different part of the house.
  6. Battery-Powered vs. Hardwired:

    • Smoke detectors can be powered by batteries or hardwired into the home's electrical system. Battery-powered detectors are easy to install but require regular battery replacement.
    • Hardwired detectors are connected to the home's electrical wiring and may include battery backup in case of power outages.
  7. Maintenance:

    • Regular maintenance is essential. Test smoke detectors monthly to ensure they are working correctly.
    • Replace batteries as needed and replace the entire smoke detector unit according to the manufacturer's recommendations (usually every 10 years).
  8. Legal Requirements:

    • Many jurisdictions have laws or building codes that mandate the installation of smoke detectors in homes, specifying their type and placement.
  9. False Alarms:

    • To reduce false alarms, avoid installing smoke detectors in areas prone to cooking fumes or steam, and clean detectors regularly to prevent dust buildup.
  10. Carbon Monoxide Detection:

    • Some smoke detectors also incorporate carbon monoxide (CO) detection capabilities, providing dual protection against fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

In summary, home smoke detectors are essential safety devices that provide early warning of potential fires, allowing residents to evacuate and seek help promptly. Regular maintenance and adherence to installation guidelines are crucial for their effectiveness.

FIRST ALERT

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers

Question: pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious
Answer: I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit.
Question: Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops
Answer: No
Question: I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago
Answer: The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling.
Question: How long do batteries last
Answer: Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain.

User questions & answers

Question: My entire home is equipped with BRK smoke detector (4120 B) and Carbon Monox Det (CO50120B). They need replacing. Will new BRK fit extant casings
Answer: Yes all the wired Nest Protect needs is the 120V hot (black) and neutral (white) wires in the electrical box connected to the plug-in pigtail that comes with the Protect. If your house has multiple detectors now you will usually also find a red wire in the electrical box that interconnects your old detectors so that if one goes off they all sound. That wire is no longer needed with the Protect so you just cap it with a wire nut.
Question: can these be connected together so if one is set off they all go off
Answer: Yes, but only if you are connected to the internet and then only for the last ten days, and only if the level rises above the heads up level (which is 70ppm and rising for around an hour or a shorter period if over 150ppm). To counter what someone else's answer was - Carbon monoxide does NOT sink. It is in fact lighter than air (CO has an atomic weight of 28 versus Nitrogen (N2) which is also 28 - but marginally heavier (by 0.003 amu due to heavier isotopes), Oxygen (O2) which is 32 and Argon which is 40. However the weight is similar enough in the air in your house that it tends to distribute as a fluid and is measurable anywhere in a room; it really depends upon how air moves through the space. The levels tend to fluctuate rapidly as CO distributes and any outside air mixes in and additional CO is added. Overall, there is no perfect way to measure the CO levels with one device in one place, but this is as good as most people need.
Question: How does the Alarm Latch feature "easily identify initiating alarm"? This is major problem with false alarms on my existing Kidde/Firex dual alarms
Answer: I just checked this for you. I unplugged my wifi router and started a test. All detectors alarmed as expected. So, yes, the system works even without active wifi.
Question: Can a BRK Model 92120B smoke detector directly plug in and replace an old BRK Model 4120B smoke detector (without an adapter
Answer: I think very few here understand the question. National code requires interconnected smoke detectors as of 2004, there is an extra wire in the circuit and all smoke detectors are on that wire for 'signal'. When one alarms they should ALL alarm. If I am reading the answers correctly, NEST does not comply with the signal wire. However, it looks like it does set up its own wireless network to act like they are all interconnected. To be honest, after paying for the extra wire behind the wall, why would I want to by 6-8 nests at $100 each when the originals are 20-30 each? This way there is one smart point to notify if any detector is going off. Nests way 6-9 smoke detectors, 6-8 login, 6-8 ip address. Ugh, what a nightmare!

Product description

The Kidde KN-COEG-3 AC powered, plug-in CO and explosive gas alarm protect you and your family from two deadly threats. The KN-COEG-3 includes 9V battery backup that provides protection during a power outage, when AC-only units cannot provide protection. By pressing the Peak Level Button you can see the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous digital display shows you the level of carbon monoxide (if any) the unit is sensing as well as if gas is present. The gas sensor is a metal oxide sensor designed to detect natural gas (methane) or propane. Temperature range- 40 degree Fahrenheit to 100 degree Fahrenheit.

Protect your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO), methane, and propane exposure with the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm. The Nighthawk is an easy-to-install unit that provides reliable protection against the dangers of CO and explosive gas. The digital display shows if gas is present indicates CO levels in parts per million, allowing you to see if, how, and when levels change.

Advanced Technology in an Easy-to-Install, Plug-In Design

Designed for home use, the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO, methane, and propane exposure. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring--even during power outages.

The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure

The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.

Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.

Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels

When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.

Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels

The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.

LED Shows Sensor Status

With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.

Convenient Mounting Options

The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.

The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the sound level I need one for basement and need to hear on ground floor
Answer: Dear cutomer, excuse that this prodcut Y301 can't detect hydrogen gas, it's mainly sensitive for methane and propane. thank you very much
Question: is this an explosive gas and carbon monoxide detector? it only says "carbon monoxide detector" on the actual product
Answer: Don't worry, it's normal, the large moisture change can affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm, but the data on display only switch to 1,2 or 3, but won;t trigger the voice and light alarm. If the data become 5 or more than 5, voice and light alarm will be triggered. Thank you very much and best regards.
Question: No manual included. Do I just plug it in and test it? What does it display if gas is detected? Thanks fellow Amazoners
Answer: HI Niran, it's sensitive to methane and propane. We think it can't used to monitor and detect CO. thank you vey much
Question: I smell natural gas in my house, and am wondering if that is the same as explosive gas? Will it detect natural gas
Answer: Dear Karen, temporarily the Y301 doesn't get UL certification, it passed CE, FCC, EMC and RoHs. We are applying US ETL certification which is equivalent to UL certification. Thank you very much and best regards.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the manufacture date on these items
Answer: The Hayward Elite Quartz model # SP056525A is CSA tested. The Hayward Elite Quarts model # SP056525 IS UL and CSA tested.
Question: If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert
Answer: The manufacture will have them. Hayward, I believe, is a well established manufacture and can be depended on.
Question: Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't
Answer: No it does not have a timer shut-off. It is turned on and off with a heavy-duty weather proof switch on the control box. It is very well made and has been really enjoyable.
Question: Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals
Answer: Rhonda,The hole is 3 3/4" in diameter. The light kit comes with the hole-cutting tool needed to cut the hole in your pool wall. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow when installing this light. The only other things you will need is an electric drill and a drill bit for drilling into metal. This is so you can drill a "pilot hole" to center the hole-cutting tool that comes with the kit. My wife and I we're able to install this light in about 15-20 minutes. We installed this under water light 5 years ago, and it still works like a champ today...haven't even had to replace the bulb! And that's with a ton of use! So even though this light gives plently of underwater lighting, we purchased another one recently (cause we wanted even more underwater lighting), and we will be installing it in a couple of weeks when the weather gets warmer. Hayward underwater lights are tops in their class and you won't be disappointed with this light. Again, this kit comes with everything you need for installation, except the drill and drill bit, and I'm sure you'll be happy with the results! Hope this helped.Phillip.

User questions & answers

Question: is it photoelectrict? Can it be connected to a fire alarm system
Answer: Your warranty starts at the date of purchase. Keep your receipt. Your 5 year shelf life starts the day you power it up. The expiration date is hard coded into the software and only starts the day you plug it in..... This is from BRK WEBSITE
Question: Have u noticed high electric bill
Answer: It doesnt matter. If you have a device alarming, you, family and pets need to remove yourself from the house and possibly call fire department. Both sources will kill you.
Question: is this detector one that is disposed off when battery is down
Answer: According to the National Fire Protection Association: Choose smoke alarms that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory.Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On levels without bedrooms, install alarms in the living room (or den or family room) or near the stairway to the upper level, or in both locations.Smoke alarms installed in the basement should be installed on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs leading to the next level.Smoke alarms should be installed at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms when cooking.Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Wall-mounted alarms should be installed not more than 12 inches away from the ceiling (to the top of the alarm). If you have ceilings that are pitched, install the alarm within 3 feet of the peak but not within the apex of the peak (four inches down from the peak).
Question: I am looking at replacing my kidde 1275 smoke alarms, which should I replace with as mine were made
Answer: The "radioactive part" is how it works. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Simple. As for false alarms, this unit with its "radioactive part" is actually much more likely to give false alarms that condition people to ignore them. It is also much less sensitive to the smoldering, smoke-producing fires that are more common in homes. That's why ionization detectors are no longer recommended in residential settings. Experts now recommend only photoelectric devices in homes, so if you have these, you should replace all of them with the SC7010B.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the unit that was recalled for not detecting smoke
Answer: so after fighting with it, i believe the answer might be smoke alarms? the octagonal shape with sides that are parallel to the battery case appear to fit into smoke alarms while the hexagonal (also on Energizer) do not. particularly First Alert/Intertek model SC9120B
Question: how long do the batteries last
Answer: Duracell components and batteries are produced at several locations in the U.S. and abroad, including Europe and China. If you have additional questions please contact our Customer Relations team at 800-551-2355 between the hours of 9am and 6pm EST.
Question: Why can't this be shipped to area code
Answer: Usually a 2 year lifespan from the date of manufacture. I have always had good luck with Duracell lasting the longest, more than the bunny claims!
Question: does it have a siliene button
Answer: It's the date usually found on the btry. On my last purchase of Duracell 9v coppertop btry's MAR 2015 is printed on the btry. The package, while it has no good to date on it says it is guaranteed fresh for 5 years. On this packaging you can not see a good to date on it until you open it and look at the btry. Therefore since it is gtd for 5 years I believe the manufacture date was 2010. Using a top rated btry like Duracell we change smoke alarm btrys every 2 years contrary to the suggested 1 year time frame of replacement. We also check the alarm function every month. We also use these 9v btry's in our garage door openers. Hope this answers your question. LR

User questions & answers

Question: Are these for direct wire to your electric or are they to be operated by the batteries alone? Also, would this size protect a 1200 sq ft home
Answer: The answer is a definite YES. It took me most of one season to figure out how to make my pool vac more efficient. First I ordered the Hayward cannister, which only hoped a little, till I tried adding the non sock filter, which nicely traps all the particulate debris, and keeps it out of your filter pump.
Question: Are they interconnect
Answer: No. It does not come with a basket.
Question: Does it come with batteries
Answer: We have the same. I pop the handle out, put the sock on and then pop the handle back in. Works just fine for us.
Question: Is this a smoke detector too? Some of the reviews say it isn’t
Answer: As long as your pool's (salt chlorinator) control panel's anti freeze mode is set at 36-40F, you should be satisfied with these socks for collecting small fragments and leaves. You will see a slight frost along the water's surface which should not create a problem. I have use the skimmer socks for about 10 years and have not had a problem. ***make certain that the freeze setting is at or above 36F

Question: What is the required weekly LED testing
Answer: It doesnt matter. If you have a device alarming, you, family and pets need to remove yourself from the house and possibly call fire department. Both sources will kill you.
Question: dimensions please? not package dimensions,,,i don't care about shipping. why is such basic info so elusive on amazon
Question: how often do th ebatteries need replacing? Nothing was mentioned on the Amazon page. Thanks

Question: Does fit right in to the bracket, to replace an existing ceiling smoke alarm
Answer: That information should be in the product description.
Question: Is this hardwired or battery power only
Answer: no
Question: does this interconnect
Answer: YES! I love it!!!!
Question: Is the green light on all the time
Answer: It's probably best to put a lightweight mattress on it. I have a Serta Perfect Sleeper Eurotop. It is extremely lightweight, very comfortable, and it doesn't add the extra weight that makes the slats on the frame squeak.
