13 best home tools smoke detectors
Home tools smoke detectors, often referred to as combination smoke carbon monoxide detectors, are essential devices for ensuring fire safety and protection from carbon monoxide in residential and commercial spaces. They play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and security of individuals and properties.
Combination Smoke Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
- These devices are designed to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) in the air.
- Smoke detectors sense the presence of smoke particles in the air, usually signaling a fire.
- Carbon monoxide detectors sense the presence of carbon monoxide gas, which is colorless, odorless, and extremely dangerous.
Fire Safety:
- Smoke detectors are a fundamental component of fire safety measures. In the event of a fire, they provide early detection and alert residents or occupants, allowing them to evacuate and call for help promptly.
- Early detection of a fire can significantly reduce property damage and save lives.
Carbon Monoxide Safety:
- Carbon monoxide detectors are crucial for safeguarding against CO poisoning, which can result from malfunctioning appliances, inadequate ventilation, or blocked chimneys.
- CO is often produced by burning fossil fuels such as gas, wood, or oil. It's a poisonous gas and can be lethal if undetected.
Installation and Placement:
- Combination detectors should be strategically placed throughout the living spaces, including bedrooms, hallways, living rooms, and near sleeping areas, to ensure comprehensive coverage.
- Proper installation is critical to their effectiveness. Follow manufacturer instructions for optimal placement and installation height.
Power Sources:
- Detectors can be powered by batteries, hardwired into the electrical system, or a combination of both (dual-power). Battery-operated detectors are essential in case of power outages.
- Regular battery checks and replacements are necessary to ensure the continued functionality of the detectors.
Testing and Maintenance:
- Routine testing of the detectors, usually through a test button, is essential to verify their functionality.
- Regular maintenance includes cleaning to remove dust or debris that may affect their performance.
Alarm Sounds and Notifications:
- Different alarm sounds indicate the type of threat detected, whether it's smoke or carbon monoxide.
- Modern detectors may have features like voice alerts or smartphone notifications to provide additional information and alerts remotely.
Compliance and Regulations:
- Detectors should meet the relevant safety standards and regulations set by organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or other local safety agencies.
Ensuring the proper installation, maintenance, and functionality of combination smoke carbon monoxide detectors is vital for maintaining a safe living environment and protecting against potential fire and carbon monoxide hazards.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anybody ever used this for wall mounting |
Answer: | no wipe with a damp cloth and I let it air dry |
Question: | when it says x 3 dose that mean you get 3 of these, or is it just 3 pieces |
Answer: | There's several in the nearly 5,000 reviews at 4.8 stars. They show the bag in a variety of levels of capacity with and without compression strips being used. The perfectly reasonable photos in the product advertisement show the 50L bag at max capacity. In the section labeled Features and Details the bag dimensions are accurately listed. Combine those with any form of length measuring device to verify the photos shown in the accurate advertisement, not to be confused with package dimensions. It is packed folded in half top to bottom and unpacked with personals thus reducing the thickness. So, if photoshopped, they are done accurately as depicted by dimensions given and review photos. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My entire home is equipped with BRK smoke detector (4120 B) and Carbon Monox Det (CO50120B). They need replacing. Will new BRK fit extant casings |
Answer: | Hello. No. Our current alarms do not work with First Alert alarms and they are not compatible. They will either need to be all Kidde or all First Alert. |
Question: | can these be connected together so if one is set off they all go off |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | How does the Alarm Latch feature "easily identify initiating alarm"? This is major problem with false alarms on my existing Kidde/Firex dual alarms |
Answer: | Up to 12 smoke or smoke + CO alarms can be connected, along with up to 6 non-alarm devices, such as strobes and horns. This is per the manufacturer's website. |
Question: | Can a BRK Model 92120B smoke detector directly plug in and replace an old BRK Model 4120B smoke detector (without an adapter |
Answer: | Hello. While the alarms are going off, the alarm setting off all of the others, the red LED light and then the green LED light will blink, every second. The other alarms will just have the red. If they stop on their own, the alarm that set off all of the others will have a red and amber LED light flashing one second each every 10 seconds. If you are getting nuisance alarms, we would recommend going ahead and blowing out all of the alarms around the back side edges very thoroughly with a can of compressed air like a can of keyboard cleaner. This will go a long way to avoiding nuisance alarms. Feel free to call us at 1-800-880-6788 with the problem alarm in hand if this doesn't help. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i need replace a fire alarm that was made in1990. it 120 v and only has 2 wires going to it, look at the photo u see 3 wires could my not be groud |
Answer: | If you can break both common and power it should work |
Question: | Can you post a pic of the quick connect power harness? I am replacing a defective unit and want to see if it will fit |
Answer: | I installed a 30amp inline fuse on the power out lead. It is easier to pop in a new fuse then walk home and replace the speed controller. Never fear, the controller will eventually blow but I am now getting a year instead of 3 months use out of the controller.. |
Question: | Can these be installed in combination with Kidde I12040 alarms? They would be hard wired into one system |
Answer: | As far as I can fixed at the low end at 12 volts and matched to the 12 volt fan I am running. It has a nice speed control and can be turned off. If you need a lower voltage I would look for one matched exactly to your voltage requirements. If it is out of spec you cannot be guaranteed or safe. |
Question: | I frequently get false alarms in the middle of the night with these. Is there another brand compatible with the interconnect I can replace them with |
Answer: | The version I received as of 2019-05-28 does fully turn off the output; there's a switch built into the potentiometer used to control the duty cycle. With that switch off, I measure 0 input power draw at 12v, but my meter tolerance is a few mA so it could possibly be drawing up to ~5ma when "off". |

User questions & answers
Question: | If there is a false alarm, can I turn this off from my i-phone |
Answer: | I open back back forgot I had installed alarm, I have a keypad by back door. When alarm sounded true keypad, nothing. I ran to unplug. Duh, battery operated then run to phone. Phone stopped everything. I didn't even get a call. That happened December 30 2018. |
Question: | How long does the battery last |
Answer: | At first my batteries were reporting 85% after 6 months, and again about 85% after the second 6 months. Then I helped my neighbor in the condo next to me setup a zwave system. Suddenly my batteries are only lasting 4-6 weeks. In other words, your signal strength will have a lot to do with how long the batteries last. |
Question: | Will this, if wired to an existing system, trigger a notification if a non-z-wave Alarm goes off (can I buy just one or do I need to replace all |
Answer: | I don't think this can be wired to an existing system? It doesn't have the receptacles on the back like the wired units do. So, as far as I can tell, you'd have to replace them all. As an aside, I left my wired system in place (4 detectors) and just installed 2 of these. I figured if we're home the wired system will alert us inside the house. If we aren't home the zwave alarms will trigger eventually, but potentially not as quick (depending on source of smoke) without the same number of detectors. |
Question: | are they hard wire? (120v with battery backup) and do they have an interconnect wire |
Answer: | No, thus they are not code compliant in most jurisdictions since interconnect is often required. |
Product description
The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers
Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
Question: | How long do batteries last |
Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many come in a pack? The listing says 6, but some people in reviews say only got |
Answer: | The detectors with sealed batteries have a 10 year lithium battery installed, and have a slightly lower standby current draw. If the unit were to go off frequently, the battery of course would not last the 10 years. The sensing circuits on all manufacturers devices are only good for about 10 years, as this is there approximate life of the radioactive element inside the chamber. Hence, it makes no sense for a manufacturer to put a longer lasting battery in them. Units with replaceable batteries usually come with a 5 year battery, which you should replace once and then get a new detector on the 2nd battery's end of life. |
Question: | Are their pics of the back to see if it connects with my 3-prong wiring system |
Answer: | Wall mounting is permitted by the manufacturer, although ceiling mounting is generally preferred. The smoke alarm must NOT be mounted too close to a room corner, or it will be ineffective. See the manufacturer's literature for information and restrictions on mounting locations. Best. |
Question: | Where is the manufacture date on the smoke detectors |
Answer: | Yes, through X-Sense's US distributer, which also confirms the firmware matches the US standards. |
Question: | How does the battery gets installed. Images doesn't provide any directions there |
Answer: | All the X-Sense detectors are made in China. However, they have a US division that ensures the firmware adheres to all NFPA and UL standards. Every country has different requirements, thus different firmware. All R&D and manufacturing is done in China. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacture date on these items |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off. |
Question: | If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector. |
Question: | Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't |
Answer: | Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D. |
Question: | Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals |
Answer: | Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this. |
Question: | When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to |
Answer: | I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM. |
Question: | does it come with the hardwire connector |
Answer: | Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery |
Question: | Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery |
Answer: | I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information. |
Question: | How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light |
Answer: | The back cover comes off install battery and replace |

User questions & answers
Question: | When I unplug this device the green light goes off even though the batteries are installed as a backup. Is that normal |
Answer: | It's about 5 1/2 in from hinge to hinge ~ 14.5 cm. It does provide full cover. The foam is flush with my face without being uncomfortable. It however is not waterproof. The foam has air slots so it can breathe. I've used these for Chemistry lab as well as wood working, and they work great. |
Question: | When I try put battery in or plug it in, the alarm goes off! Does that alarm sound stop? It's brand new |
Answer: | They stay on surprisingly well! I use them for my dog grooming business. They are light weight so that works good for me. They might be a bit too light for sports. If you got hit with a ball they would probably crack and potentially cut you. |
Question: | How do you turn on the "low battery hush |
Answer: | Yes, it should do a good job to keep out drywall dust. However, I ended up removing it due to condensation buildup while using it |
Question: | What is the location of the wall plug on the device? Will it cover the entire outlet |
Answer: | yes they can fit over Rx glasses but I don't recommend because they became blurring and you will not see very well |

Designed for home use, the Kidde KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in CO alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring of CO levels--even during power outages.
About Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Killer
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.
Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house from CO exposure by giving you an unmistakable signal when levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beats every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed.
Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk is unique among traditional CO alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged.
LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.
Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.
The UL-listed Kidde KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.
