13 best defender alarm systems

Defender alarm systems, also known as combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors or alarms, are devices designed to enhance safety and security in residential and commercial spaces. These alarm systems play a critical role in fire safety and protection against the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Here is some information about defender alarm systems and their relevance to fire safety and security:

  1. Purpose: Defender alarm systems are designed to detect the presence of smoke and carbon monoxide gas in the environment. Their primary purpose is to alert occupants of potential fire hazards or the buildup of dangerous levels of CO, allowing them to evacuate the premises or take appropriate actions.

  2. Detection Methods:

    • Smoke Detection: These alarms use photoelectric or ionization sensors to detect smoke particles in the air. When smoke is detected, the alarm triggers a loud audible alert.
    • Carbon Monoxide Detection: Defender alarm systems use electrochemical sensors to detect the presence of carbon monoxide gas. CO is colorless, odorless, and highly toxic, making it crucial to have a reliable detector to warn occupants when CO levels become hazardous.
  3. Combination Units: Many defender alarm systems combine both smoke and carbon monoxide detection in a single unit. This is especially common in homes and businesses to provide comprehensive protection against fire and CO poisoning.

  4. Audible Alarms: When smoke or elevated CO levels are detected, the alarm emits a loud, distinctive sound to alert occupants. The alarm's intensity and pattern may vary depending on the manufacturer and model.

  5. Battery and Hardwired Options: Defender alarm systems can be battery-operated or hardwired into a building's electrical system. Battery-operated models offer flexibility and can be installed without wiring, while hardwired versions typically offer continuous power and may interconnect with other alarms in the building.

  6. Interconnectivity: Many modern defender alarm systems are designed to be interconnected, meaning if one alarm detects smoke or CO, it can trigger all alarms in the interconnected system to sound simultaneously. This ensures that everyone in the building is alerted.

  7. Monitoring Services: Some defender alarm systems can be connected to monitoring services that automatically alert emergency responders when an alarm is triggered. This can provide an additional layer of protection, especially when occupants are away from the premises.

  8. Regular Maintenance: It's important to perform regular maintenance on defender alarm systems, including testing them regularly, replacing batteries, and cleaning sensors. This ensures their continued reliability.

In summary, defender alarm systems, or combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, are essential tools for ensuring the safety and security of residential and commercial spaces. They are designed to detect smoke and carbon monoxide and provide audible alerts to warn occupants of potential fire or CO hazards, allowing for a timely response and evacuation if necessary. These devices are a critical component of fire safety and security in homes and businesses.

    User questions & answers

Question: What kind of battery does it use
Answer: Hi, The Fortress Guardian uses 3AAA batteries for the motion detector and a 23A battery for the remote.
Question: The main unit is no longer activated by the door sensors, though it is still active. What will fix this
Answer: If you are speaking of the motion detector being the main unit and just having the simple sensors being synced into it, or if you are referring to the mail unit that is part of one of the door sensors, the main thing that would stop any of them in that they become no longer synced to each other. If that is the case, I would suggest you at least pull out batteries or replace as needed and try another sync set up, like you did when you first received them. Good luck, the good thing is that they are not expensive to replace.
Question: It works the SOS button on other countries ,in mine country is the same
Answer: This is not an alarm tied into a telephone system. It only sounds at the unit. The SOS button will sound the alarm without it having been activated. Again, though it is just a very loud alarm sounding from the unit itself, it does not send a signal to an alarm company or police
Question: I want to order 3-4 of these. Can one fob be programed to manage all of the sensors
Answer: Hi Hot Flash Diva, Yes, one remote fob can be programmed to multiple Guardian units. I hope this helps and please let us know if you have any further questions. Thanks for choosing Fortress!

    User questions & answers

Question: Can this alarm be installed on sliding doors
Answer: Since sliding doors design vary based upon manufacturer it's hard to accurately answer this request. However, if you can adhere both items of this product side by side - one being stationary, the other being the movable piece, then it will work just fine. In other words, when the sliding door is in the closed position, you must be able to install this product in such a way that when the door is opened, the two pieces "break contact" with one another thereby sounding the very loud and high-pitched alarm. Hope this helps.
Question: I can see they have buttons/switches, are they easy for young children to mess with
Answer: There is just a switch. The item that looks like a big button on the front is not a button. I believe it is just the speaker. The switch is a standard sliding switch. If children could reach it, they could turn it off, depending on their age and the location of the alarm. On doors, these are usually mounted at the top of the door, well out of reach of children in normal circumstances. The alarms are also pretty small (about 2.5 inches long), so they don't attract much attention.
    Question: what type of batteries
    Answer: Energizer LR44 1.5V Button Cell Battery 20 pack $9.88 at https://www.amazon.com/Energizer-LR44-Button-Battery-Replaces/dp/B00FO97DCU/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1487866701&sr=8-1&keywords=LR446+battery
Question: We want to install alarms in a vacation rental. Will these damage the walls/windows when removed after a week
Answer: The ones I gor today actually did come standard with 3M double sided tape and it sticks great. Dont know if it will damage after being on a few weeks but ai was able to pull it off the wall after about 30 min and no damage.

    User questions & answers

Question: When I unplug this device the green light goes off even though the batteries are installed as a backup. Is that normal
Answer: It's about 5 1/2 in from hinge to hinge ~ 14.5 cm. It does provide full cover. The foam is flush with my face without being uncomfortable. It however is not waterproof. The foam has air slots so it can breathe. I've used these for Chemistry lab as well as wood working, and they work great.
Question: When I try put battery in or plug it in, the alarm goes off! Does that alarm sound stop? It's brand new
Answer: They stay on surprisingly well! I use them for my dog grooming business. They are light weight so that works good for me. They might be a bit too light for sports. If you got hit with a ball they would probably crack and potentially cut you.
Question: How do you turn on the "low battery hush
Answer: Yes, it should do a good job to keep out drywall dust. However, I ended up removing it due to condensation buildup while using it
Question: What is the location of the wall plug on the device? Will it cover the entire outlet
Answer: yes they can fit over Rx glasses but I don't recommend because they became blurring and you will not see very well

    Product description

The First Alert CO600 Plug In Carbon Monoxide Alarm utilizes an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor to detect carbon monoxide. The plug in design of this personal carbon monoxide detector means you can simply plug the alarm into a 120 volt wall outlet, and the carbon monoxide detector is ready to go. When CO levels become elevated, a loud 85 decibel alarm alerts you to the threat. Designed to be simple to use, the CO detector has just 1 button that silences or tests the unit, as well as an end of life timer that lets you know when it is time to replace the device.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert CO600 carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. Installation is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The unit monitors and re-alarms if carbon monoxide levels persist sounding a loud 85-decibel horn. UL listed.--Bree Norlander

Question: Would this device work in a 6' x 6' hunting blind with a Mr. Heater heating unit
Answer: Not for sure but wife read that rhey can fluxiate between 0-3 with no problems mine does it also
Question: your cob b lcm coc allarm is 15$ 6 is 99$ . why does quantity coct more
Answer: When I used the digital gas detector to test it worked fine.
Question: How far apart are the mounting holes
Answer: There are two possible causes. The unit was not zeroed out upon activation or you do have a very low level of gas in your home atmosphere, with the first being my best guess. Unplug and move and re-check the reading. If this does not resolve the issue send it back for a new one. Mine has worked well for 6 months so far.
Question: Why is the 2 pack more than 2 times the price of the single detector
Answer: I returned these detectors. They don't have any information printed on the case - no manufacturer name, no instructions, no UL approved indicator, etc. These were made in China which is usually okay but I am not comfortable in relying on them to protect my family. I will be researching further and looking for better detectors that can be trusted.

Orbit 62100 Yard Enforcer Motion-Activated Sprinkler with Day & Night Detection Modes,Black

    Orbit

Based on 4 reviews Check latest price

    Product description

The Orbit Yard Enforcer (TM) Motion-Activated Sprinkler protects landscapes and gardens from animals and pests. A powerful combination of spray, motion and noise not only acts as a deterrent to scare off animals, but also conditions them to stay away from the enforced area. The heat and motion-activated sensor detects movement from up to 40 feet away and triggers the valve to spray a burst of water. The heavy-duty metal dual-step spike allows you to position the Yard Enforcer wherever you need it in your yard. The Yard Enforcer is also the only motion-activated sprinkler that includes a flow-through outlet above the valve. That means you can add sprinklers to the enforced area that are triggered by the sensor as well. The dual-purpose sprinkler has a timed watering feature that allows you to water your garden 30 minutes at a time. Other pest and animal repellent methods simply do not provide the same level of simplicity and control: fences are expensive; netting is inconvenient; and repellent wears off and is harmful to you. Keep deer away from vegetable gardens, cats out of flowerbeds, birds from strawberry patches and ponds, and dogs away from lawns without the use of harmful methods: Don't hurt em, just squirt em.

    • HUMANELY REPELS ANIMALS AND PESTS: Keeps animals and pests out of plants, yards and gardens using a harmless spray of water.
    • UNIQUE DAY AND NIGHT DETECTION: The only deterrent sprinkler on the market with options for day only, night only, or 24 hour protection, giving you the flexibility to ensure the Yard Enforcer only activates when you need it
    • STABLE DESIGN: Simply press spike into soil or turf to firmly hold the Yard Enforcer in place.
    • SAVE WATER AND BATTERY LIFE: Includes sensing technology for optimum water and battery conservation; get over 7,500 activation cycles on just 4 AA alkaline batteries and as little as 2 cups of water per activation.
    • INTELLIGENT SENSING TECHNOLOGY: Sensing technology learns the difference between trees and animals, so your water will not activate every time the wind blows.
    • NOTE: The number "56036" is the model number for one PART of the item "62001". Number 56036 is the model number for just the sensor.

    User questions & answers

Question: How does this work compared to the scarecrow? need to keep a herring out of my Koi pond
Answer: I have used this on my Koi pond for many years now with great success. So I don't get sprayed during the day.... my water supply has a battery timer.... The timer is set for 10PM tp 8 AM..... so simple..... works great and I can set the time for it to work.
Question: There seems to be an additional part in my package that is about 2" long and 1" high that is not part of assembly instructions. Any clue as to what this is
Answer: The extra item drove me nuts for about 30 minutes. Until i figured out that it is simply a screw on replacement part so the "helmet head sensor" can be mounted by sliding the square part on the "valve square front. This lowers the "Helmet sensor" to be about eye level with like a rabbit or cat. Simply unscrew the all black small round knob that is on the "helmet sensor" remove the screw and remove the piece you just detached (the 4 inch bracket that has a round hole that would normally fit the vertical pipe shaft. Now replace that 4 inch part with the smaller 2 inch long part that has a square end and a round end. Push the screw thru the round end and into your "helmet sensor" (it only fits one way), then hook it/slide it onto the sensors square front. The "helmet sensor" now just sits there, not exactly a secured in a long term way but i guess it works.
Question: What happens if a human steps on the lawn? Will that turn on and spray on a person? I don't want it ends up spraying on myself
Answer: Yes, if you trigger the motion detection, and you are in the area of spray, you will get sprayed, just like a deer or rabbit would. If you need to be there and don't want to get sprayed, you will need to turn it off temporarily.
Question: Will it work on mailmen delivering bills
Answer: Shannon, yes it will work on things as large as humans, though we can't promise that they won't return with said bills at a later date.

    Effective and Humane Pest Deterrents

Tired of critters wreaking havoc in your yard? Are they eating or destroying your garden, flowers, or other yard vegetation? The Yard Enforcer is a motion-activated sprinkler that combines sound, water, motion and ingenuity as a defense to one of your most precious assets: your landscape. They deter deer, birds, cats, dogs, skunks, opossums, and other similar pests and animals without hurting them.

    Three Detection Modes

The exclusive Detection Mode feature allows you to control when the Yard Enforcer is activated. You can use them only during daylight hours, or, for protection 24/7, select the ‘always on’ mode. Only want to protect the yard at night so it doesn’t spray human visitors during the day? The ‘night only' mode will do just that.

    Expandable Spray Zone

The Yard Enforcer has the ability to increase the water enforcement area by connecting additional impact sprinklers (sold separately), via the dual flow-through ports controlled by the valve. Another option is to increase the protected zone with additional Enforcers that can be linked together through the flow-through outlet.

    Superior Coverage

The powerful infrared sensor can detect intruders from up to 40 feet away and has a wide viewing angle of 120 degrees, that’s 1600 square feet of protective coverage from a single unit.

    One Smart Sensor

The Yard Enforcer has a passive infrared motion sensor that detects animals from up to 40 feet away, even at night, to give you maximum protection, and its intelligent sensing technology learns the difference between animals and tree limbs blowing in the wind to prevent overwatering.

    Adjustable Line of Sight

Position the sensor and sprinkler in the direction of where the pest enters the yard to chase them away before they reach the plants and landscaping you are protecting. The sensor unit can be angled down for smaller animals, or angled up for larger animals and birds.

    Doubles as a Sprinkler

The Yard Enforcer has a 30-minute watering cycle that enables it to function as a timed sprinkler. Protect the yard without the hassle of having to switch out the Enforcers for a sprinkler every time the lawn or garden needs watering.

    Hose-Y Adapter

The Yard Enforcer is at its best when it's left untouched, so it can keep your plants safe from pests. Putting a hose adapter or splitter at your faucet gives you more flexibility for additional watering applications.

    Garden Hose

Now that you've chosen your weapon, get a professional-grade garden hose that's durable and long enough to reach all the way back to your hose faucet.

    Impact Sprinkler(s)

Increase your overall spray coverage by adding more impact sprinklers downstream of your Yard Enforcer. Just make sure you have enough hoses to make the connection between each sprinkler.

    User questions & answers

Question: I bought this but cannot open it. Is mine defective or is there a trick to opening it
Answer: Sometimes you are right. I had one defective out of three I received. The spring was loaded improperly which made the latch always to be in the open. Or if I forced it, the spring would dislodge and make it difficult to even close. And once closed it would not open. Now if that is the case then you need replacement. However, if you are trying to understand how it works, all you have to do is when the latch lodged in the recess, basically in its closed position, pull out as if you are navigating around the latch notch that stops it. So the idea is pull laterally first and then turn the latch around the notch. Hope that helps.
Question: do the screws come with this, or if not, what size do I need to buy
Answer: Screws do come with it but buy your own. The screws that come with it are cheap and will break. By the same size screws but buy concrete screws. They're much stronger,
Question: Does it only work when someone is inside
Answer: I installed this on my front door. As others have said, you must be inside to lock it, and it cannot be locked or unlocked from the outside. So you have no access to the door from the outside when the lock is in place. I keep it locked all the time, even when I'm not home, because I go in and out through my back door. For extra safety and strength, I installed two of them on my front door, one about chest high and one about two feet from the floor. I did this because I have a glass panel on the top half of the door, so if a burglar breaks the window, the bottom blocker is out of reach. As extra security for my back door, I installed a security door (like a screen door except it's heavy gauge metal with its own handle lock and deadbolt). This door blocker is extremely well-made (heavy metal) and is a fantastic product. I highly recommend it.
Question: Would the Fire Department have trouble entering a house with this lock in case of a fire
Answer: I have experience breaking doors. I’ve put locks like this or better on my house knowing it will slow the fire dept down a bit but like others have said we have tools that will break even this. A halligan tool in the right hands will get through this pretty quickly, however with a lot of noise and certainly will deter the average criminal. 800lbs is a good amount of force to withstand, I think a average 200lb fireman with a halligan tool is probably capable of 1000lbs Of force applied to a certain spot on the door. If you put the lock high or low that will make breaking That more difficult. But the hydraulic tools fireman carry go up to 5000lbs.

First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarm | Battery Operated, SCO5CN

    FIRST ALERT

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

    Product description

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.

The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

    User questions & answers

Question: pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious
Answer: I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit.
Question: Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops
    Answer: No
Question: I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago
Answer: The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling.
Question: How long do batteries last
Answer: Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain.

First Alert PRC710 Combination Alarm, 1 pack

    First Alert

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

    Product description

Featuring a low profile, contemporary design, the First Alert PRC710 Slim Photoelectric Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm with 10 Year Battery provides the same protection as a standard smoke alarm while taking up only a fraction of the space. This slim, battery operated smoke detector requires no hardwiring for installation, making it an ideal solution for those who want to enhance fire safety without hiring an electrician. It features a built in 10 year lithium ion battery that provides continuous power for up to a decade. Equipped with an ultra reliable photoelectric sensor, the smoke alarm detects smoke from slow burning, smoldering fires while keeping false alarms to a minimum. A patented smoke entry system further enhances the detector's reliability by providing a direct path to the smoke sensor. The unit also features an advanced electrochemical sensor that detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources such as faulty fuel burning appliances and blocked chimneys. The simple twist lock mounting system installs easily onto a wall or ceiling, while the tamper resistant locks help prevent removal of the battery to keep the alarm secure. Half as thick as a standard alarm, the smoke detector has a sleek, slim design that blends in seamlessly with most decor. A loud 85 decibel alarm sounds when smoke is detected, and a convenient test/silence button lets you easily check alarm function and mute false alarms. TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS: Activating the battery. Mount alarm to mounting bracket to activate. Once unit is activated, it cannot be turned off. NOTE: After you activate the battery, the power indicator light may flash. (If the unit alarms, the light will blink rapidly, and the horn will repeatedly sound 3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps.) Once the Smoke Alarm is on the bracket, you can rotate the Alarm to adjust the alignment. Clean the Smoke/CO Alarm at least once a month; gently vacuum the outside of the Smoke/CO Alarm using your household vacuum’s soft brush attachment. A can of clean compressed air may also be used. Follow manufacturer instructions for use. Test the Smoke/CO Alarm. Never use water, cleaners or solvents since they may damage the unit. If the Smoke/CO Alarm becomes contaminated by excessive dirt, dust and/or grime, and cannot be cleaned to avoid unwanted alarms, replace the unit immediately. DO NOT LOCATE THIS SMOKE/CO ALARM: In garages, furnace rooms, crawl spaces and unfinished attics. Avoid extremely dusty, dirty or greasy areas. Where combustion particles are produced. Combustion particles form when something burns. Areas to avoid include poorly ventilated kitchens, garages, and furnace rooms. Keep units at least 20 feet (6 meters) from the sources of combustion particles (stove, furnace, water heater, space heater) if possible. In areas where a 20-foot (6 meter) distance is not possible – in modular, mobile, or smaller homes, for example – it is recommended the Smoke Alarm be placed as fa from these fuel-burning sources as possible. The placement recommendations are intended to keep these Alarms at a reasonable distance from a fuel-burning source, and thus reduce “unwanted” alarms. Unwanted alarms can occur if a Smoke Alarm is placed directly next to a fuel-burning source. Ventilate these areas as much as possible. Within 5 feet (1.5 meters) of any cooking appliance. In air streams near kitchens. Air currents can draw cooking smoke into the smoke sensor and cause unwanted alarms. In extremely humid areas. This Alarm should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a shower, sauna, humidifier, vaporizer, dishwasher, laundry room, utility room, or other source of high humidity. In direct sunlight. In turbulent air, like near ceiling fans or open windows. Blowing air may prevent CO or smoke from reaching the sensors. In areas where temperature is colder than 40˚ F (4.4˚ C) or hotter than 100˚F (37.8˚ C). These areas include non-airconditioned crawl spaces, unfinished attics, uninsulated or poorly insulated ceilings, porches, and garages. In insect infested areas. Insects can clog the openings to the sensing chamber. Less than 12 inches (305 mm) away from fluorescent lights. Electrical “noise” can interfere with the sensor. In “dead air” spaces. See “Avoiding Dead Air Spaces”.

    User questions & answers

Question: This gets such terrible reviews...What are better choices for a 10-year smoke/carbon detector
Answer: I have no idea if any of the brands available are any better than this.
    Question: how to silence
Answer: There is a reset/silence button on the front cover of the detector. Push it and it should reset. If not you battery is no good and you need anew detector!
Question: Do you ceiling mount this fore/co2 alarm? doesn't co2 settle to the ground first
Answer: This is a CO alarm, not a CO2 alarm. CO2 is what makes your soda fizzy and is in in chained cylinders at restaurants... CO is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas. The ONLY way to detect it is by detector. It is generated by any gas-powered appliances like dryers, stoves, snowblowers, cars, etc, and by burning like fire places. CO is BARELY lighter than air (about .96 to air being 1 for vapor density), and will mix and collect like normal air does, with drafts and normal air movement. CO detectors can be mounted at just about any height, though many manufacturers (somewhat arbitrarily) picked 5ft or chest height as the ideal mounting height. Smoke and heat rise, so smoke/heat detectors are required to be mounted within 12" of the ceiling. Combination detectors are common, and need to be mounted within 12" of the ceiling for the smoke function to operate properly.
Question: Does it use the same ceiling mounts as previous first alert detectors
Answer: The ceiling mount is different, but the screws are in the same place. Just loosen the screws, swith mounts, and tighten back up.
