12 best battery operated sump pumps
Battery-operated sump pumps are essential tools for homeowners to prevent water damage and flooding in basements and other low-lying areas. They fall under the category of power water pumps and are typically found in the Tools section of Home Improvement stores. Here is some information about battery-operated sump pumps:
Purpose: Battery-operated sump pumps are designed to pump water out of a sump pit or basin in situations where there is a power outage or when the primary electric sump pump fails. They provide a backup solution to protect homes from basement flooding during storms or when the main electrical supply is interrupted.
Components: These pumps usually consist of a pump unit, a float switch or sensor, a battery, and a control panel. The float switch detects rising water levels and activates the pump when needed. The battery provides power to the pump when there is no electricity from the grid.
Installation: Installing a battery-operated sump pump typically involves setting up the pump unit in the sump pit, connecting it to the battery, and installing the float switch at the desired water level. The control panel manages the system and monitors battery status.
Battery Types: There are different types of batteries used in these systems, including deep-cycle marine batteries and maintenance-free AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries. AGM batteries are often preferred because they require less maintenance and are less prone to leakage.
Battery Life: The duration a battery-operated sump pump can run on battery power depends on factors such as the battery's capacity, the pump's energy efficiency, and the rate of water inflow. Some systems are designed to provide several hours of backup power.
Alert Systems: Many battery-operated sump pump systems come with alert features that notify homeowners when the battery needs replacement or if there is a problem with the backup system. This helps ensure that the system is always ready for use.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep the system in good working condition. This may include testing the pump periodically, checking the battery's charge status, and replacing the battery as needed.
Availability: Battery-operated sump pumps are widely available at home improvement stores, plumbing supply shops, and online retailers. They come in various models with different pumping capacities to suit the specific needs of your basement or crawl space.
It's important to choose a reliable battery-operated sump pump system and install it correctly to ensure it functions as a dependable backup during power outages or emergencies, helping to protect your home from potential water damage.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this pump come with a battery |
Answer: | The pump does not come with a battery. |
Question: | Can anyone please recommend a battery to purchase for this unit |
Answer: | Make sure you get a size 27 deep cycle marine/rv battery, but pay the extra money for an AGM type. I bought the standard one for $81 at Sam’s Club, and it worked fine at first, but it died in 2 years because I did not check and maintain the water levels. After much research I realize that I should have paid the $159 price for the AGM version (maintenance free), and all would be well. I also got into the habit of unplugging the regular pump and dumping a 5 gallon bucket of water down to trigger and exercise the backup system fully. |
Question: | What size pvc pipe goes into the single fitting at the top of the unit, and what method are you using to attach it? Thanks |
Answer: | I glued a three-foot section of 1-1/2" PVD pipe to the wye-fitting at the top of the pump assemble. At the top of the three-foot section I used an 1-1/2" Fernco rubber coupler with stainless steel clamps to connect it to the drain line. You're going to love this pump. It's the quietest pump I've ever heard. |
Question: | Is it ok to connect to the primary pumps PVC before the check valve, eliminating the need for 2 check valves |
Answer: | No, you need a check valve for each pump. This happened to my sump pump installation: Over time, the flapper (acts like the valve) in the check valve deformed a little, detached from its hinge point(s), and ended up in the FRONT part of the body. This meant that when water was being pumped out of the sump, the water forced the flapper into the check valve opening... BLOCKING the flow! The check valve ended up working backwards, basically. With the water unable to flow, after enough time, the sump pump burned itself out. If two pumps are feeding through just one check valve, the same thing could happen to both pumps. Each pump needs its own check valve. It's OK for the discharge lines to merge afterwards. BTW: If you really depend of a reliable sump pump installation, spend the extra $30-$50 bucks and get a couple of industrial-strength check valves (regardless if you have a single or double-pump system). They will be "out of sight and out of mind" parts of your installation; you need to KNOW that they'll last! |

User questions & answers
Question: | If an upstairs neighbor had a water-pipe breakage, would this type of pump help prevent flooding from the water coming down into my unit |
Answer: | Steve: The unit is really designed to pump water out of a small to medium-sized boat. However, it does have an attachment that will screw on to a hose, so it could serve as a temporary fix if you could feed a hose out a window on into a tub. |
Question: | Will it work to drain a waterbed |
Answer: | Doubtful, though I've never owned a waterbed so I can't say for sure. The intake is the bottom of the unit which needs to be physically submerged in the water (pipe is for discharge only) - so unless you have a big hole on the top of the bed, or a bucket that it's draining into, this likely isn't the tool for you. |
Question: | If placed on a flat floor of a dinghy, how much water would not be captured by the pump |
Answer: | Hey, J. Baker, Pete Meyer here. I have only used it in row boats with electric trolling motors on them. I have been able to remove all but about a pint by putting it in the stern of both my boat and my fisherman friend's. It is very efficient at getting rid of almost all the water in a corner of a boat where one can put most of the weight in that same corner to make it the lowest part of the floor. My friend took the pump to her house today as she just pulls her boat up on the shore and we had over an inch of rain. Her boat probably was really full. But she just puts it in and turns it on and gets her gear ready while her boat is bailing. She loves it! |
Question: | Is it submersible |
Answer: | Yes. I just got my pump today and used to drain some water off a pool cover and it worked great. 3 D batteries are said to last up to 5 hours. I used the little pump for an hour or so and it worked great. Be sure to turn on when in the water. If can't then turn on then drop into the water quickly so pump primes. I bought a 10-foot extension hose also so I could use the pump in more places where a longer drainage hose is needed. I am also going to try in one place on my driveway that collects a couple of inches of rain to see how the pump does. Note: we will be resurfacing our driveway come Summer but in the meantime, some uneven areas collect a little water. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it good |
Answer: | No. It is terrible and I wish I could return it. It is very difficult to change the batteries and seems to go through batteries faster than my other pump. |
Question: | does it generate enough pressure to operate a sprinkler |
Answer: | It can move water from here to there, but not with enough pressure to operate a sprinkler |
Question: | Does this pump have to be submerged to operate or would that burn out the motor |
Answer: | The bottom/inlets have to be submerged in water to pump. The batteries will run out before you burn up the motor, it does not seem to need the water for cooling, it is not like you garage disposal. |
Question: | Would this work to drop off into the lake and rinse a boat out? We do not have power access on the dock |
Answer: | I would not recommend this pump in that application. Although it would provide water from the water source, I would have my doubts about it handling "rinsing a boat". This pump was designed to handle light duty work such as stopped up sinks, draining toilet tanks, etc. Thank You. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it safe to pump gasoline with |
Answer: | The pump is intended for water. I would not recommend pumping gasoline with this pump. |
Question: | How many amps does this pump draw? I cant exceed 7.5 in my application |
Answer: | On hard loads, this pump pulls over 4 amps in steady state. Start up requires significantly more. The amperage it consumes is directly related to the load. You would need to use a large starting capacitor big enough to handle the startup amperage and any spikes in the workload (blocked inlet, etc). For reference, you can calculate the theoretical amperage (expect real word to be 4-6X higher than theoretical because of friction losses and motor inefficiencies.): Theoretical Amperage = (pump gph) * (feet liquid is lifted) * (density of your liquid E.G. Water = 8.3 lbs/gal) * 0.000377 W/(ft*lbs/hr) / 12VExample: The pump is rated for 300gph with a 10ft lift. Assuming water as the liquid, a perfectly efficient 12V motor would need .78 amps, and I've seen it pull > 4 amps, so you may want to multiply your theoretical calculation by 5 for a decent back-of-the-napkin calculation. All in all, you'd need to test it for your specific application. |
Question: | Is this made in the usa |
Answer: | No - this item is purchased offshore. Regards, Bob Wayne Water Systems |
Question: | Can i attach a water hose nozzle at the end of the water hose and turn it on and off with the nozzle with out destroying the pump |
Answer: | You need a pump known as an "on demand" pump. There are many for sale here on amazon as they are very common. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I got this hooked up and activated the float to test. The pump activated, but when I lowered the float it kept running. Is the controller defective |
Answer: | When the float switch for the backup pump is activated, he pump will run on a timer which is usually around 25-30 seconds. I would recommend testing it again and give it at least a minute to shut off. For further information contact our service team at 800-991-0466 option 3. |
Question: | Can this run semi-continuous while connected to AC power when main pump fails? Wayne controller had burning smell while charging and running |
Answer: | The unit has its' own floats, so the pump will run when the water level raises the float, so it depends on where you place the backup pump float. Place it above the main unit float so if the water level continues to rise due to a failed main pump, the backup pump will kick-in. |
Question: | If my main pump fails will the back up kick in |
Answer: | That will only happen if you have the battery back-up unit in Working order. It is designed to kick in when the power fails or if the power has been out and the float switch on the main unit is activated and then the battery unit takes over. You need to consult the owner's manual for the exact info. |
Question: | battery run time |
Answer: | It really would depend on the type of battery ,marine battery deep cycle works best. and the amount of water entering your basement . From a few hours to all day |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could this pump be hooked up to a battery on an idling truck |
Answer: | I supppose so, since it runs off 12v |
Question: | how do you attach this as a back up sump pump? Any guidance is appreciated |
Answer: | There are directions in the guide. Essentially you attach it to your main sump pipe a little higher up from your primary pump and position the float switch along the same pipe so it'll trigger if it gets above the point where your primary pump float switch is located at. You will need to buy some additional PVC pieces most likely (like a Wye fitting, a 45 degree angle pipe, and a check valve) and you'll need to cut your primary pipe to bring in the pipe line coming from the backup pump. I had some issues getting the float switch at the right level since I had to put the switch higher than it showed it in the diagram in the guide but overall it wasn't too tough to do myself and I'm not the handiest when it comes to home improvement. |
Question: | Does the alarm reset itself or does it continuously sound the alarm until manually reset |
Answer: | Hi there, The alarm will sound continuously until you reset it. You can disable the audible alarm, like if you know the primary pump is not running like during a power outage, by holding the MUTE ALARM button until it beeps at you, about 10-12 seconds. You can reset it by doing the same thing when you are ready. Thanks |
Question: | How big is the pump |
Answer: | Hi there, The pump itself has a foot print of 5 7/8" x 5 1/2" and is 8" tall Thanks |

Question: | What is the water volume per minute at 6 ft height (or at any other benchmarked height |
Answer: | the batteries only lasted 2 hours and had to be changed out, dont know the volume of water, I used it to pump out the bottom of the pool. took a long time. |
Question: | Will this pump work with a simple rotating sprinkler? Would there be enough pressure |
Answer: | It might work once but then it will break. I’ve got 2 of them and my partner got one and they worked great the 1st time but all 3 never worked again. Rotating sprinkler? Can’t even think of using this with that application. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the PSI or max head (pumping vertical height) of this pump |
Answer: | Length of hose for a sump pump is not nearly as important as lift. you can have a long horizontal run with only minor flow loss. Friction loss (the loss from hose length) at these low pressures is very small. The elevation (aka lift) is the true limiting factor. (PSI means pounds per square inch, FYI, the water pressure coming into your house from the main is about 50-80psi, someone wondered what psi meant). Based on the chart, this pump moves about 30 gallons per minute (gpm). If you lift ten feet the flow drops to about 20 gpm; at 20 feet of lift it's flowing about 10 gpm. I have used this with vinegar to flush my tankless water heater and I used it with about 50/50 mix of simple green and water in a 5 gallon bucket as a parts washer for motorcycle parts and the pump is fine. I do flush it with clean water when I am done. |
Question: | Does it have an automatic shut off |
Answer: | The pump does not have an automatic shut off. I added a float switch because I wanted it to pump out a sink that had a slow-running clogged drain where I had the washing machine. When the sink was mostly pumped out the float switch turned off the pump. It worked great for a couple years until I got around to dealing with snaking the drain which didn't have an easy clean-out. This is a good pump, since the sink drain got taken care of, we've been using the pump to pump koi pond water over a 5' fence to our neighbor's garden using about 150' of garden hose. The pump runs continuously for 5+ hours without issues in this process. |
Question: | Will clothes washer hoses fit on this pump |
Answer: | The pump itself fits a garden hose nicely. You can buy the attachment package listed next to it for the converter piece. It only came to around $8.00. It also comes with a larger hose. I didn't need it for my spa but if you need to empty a washer or bigger pool it seems like it would come in handy. Hope that helps. Good luck. :-) |
Question: | Can this be user to flush a tankless heater with vinigar |
Answer: | I bought the pump for this very reason. I'm not sure if it is rated to handle vinegar, but at the price I figured I'd try it and see. I have two tankless water heaters, and I wanted a pump that could clean out both at the same time and this pump certainly does the job. I have a hose that runs from the pump, into a splitter. From the splitter I have two hoses going to each water heater (one hose per water heater). Even pushing water through two hoses, it still has a strong flow, with each hose pushing about the same flow as the water hose faucet outside your house opened wide open (guestimate). The splitter I have allows me to adjust the flow rate by closing off some valves if it is too strong. For just one water heater, i would think this pump is too strong (as it REALLY moves water), but I'm not a plumber so I couldn't say for sure. If I were to do it again, I think I would have purchased the 1/4 HP pump, or even the 1/5HP for cleaning out water heaters with vinegar. I cleaned out my water heater this week for the first time using this pump. I let it run for 2 hrs, and I noticed that it got warm (about the temp of a warm-to-hot bath). I'm not sure if that is normal, but thought I'd let you know. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long is the transfer hose? From pump to car, tractor |
Answer: | About 1 1/2 foot. I thought about changing the hose but it has a built-in switch to cut pump off at full tank. It REALLY works great to pump from gas cans into mower and such. I also use to pump out gas from 12gal boat gas tank....work well |
Question: | How long do the batteries last? will it pump 10-20 gallons before new aa batteries die |
Answer: | I am certain it would. Pumps through 10 gallons with ease. NO sign of slowing up. You will be happy with how it works |
Question: | Do you have a model that works for transfering drinking liquids |
Answer: | no |
Question: | Is it just me, it seems a little scary to use an electrical device (cheap one at that) to pump Gasoline. Any electrical device can create spark |
Answer: | Static electricity can make a spark, the gas pump at your local service station is probably powered by 120 volts. This thing uses a single AA. I love mine and never worry about it. |
