13 best tankless hot water heaters

Tankless hot water heaters, also known as on-demand or instantaneous water heaters, are a type of water heating system used to provide hot water for various household purposes.Unlike traditional water heaters with storage tanks, tankless water heaters heat water as it is needed, offering several advantages:

  1. On-Demand Heating: Tankless water heaters heat water only when a hot water tap is turned on. This means you get hot water on demand, eliminating the need for a storage tank to keep a large volume of water constantly heated.

  2. Energy Efficiency: One of the primary advantages of tankless water heaters is their energy efficiency. They can be significantly more energy-efficient than traditional tank-style water heaters because they don't constantly heat and reheat water to maintain a set temperature. This can result in lower energy bills over time.

  3. Space-Saving: Tankless units are compact and wall-mounted, saving valuable floor space compared to traditional tank-style water heaters, which can be quite large.

  4. Endless Hot Water: Tankless systems provide a continuous supply of hot water, as long as the demand doesn't exceed their capacity. This can be particularly advantageous for households with high hot water usage.

  5. Longer Lifespan: Tankless water heaters often have a longer lifespan than traditional units, potentially lasting 20 years or more with proper maintenance.

  6. Reduced Risk of Water Damage: Since tankless systems don't have a large tank of water that can leak or rupture, they reduce the risk of water damage caused by tank failures.

  7. Temperature Control: Most tankless water heaters offer precise temperature control, allowing you to set your desired hot water temperature.

  8. Variety of Fuels: Tankless water heaters can be powered by electricity, natural gas, propane, or even solar energy, providing flexibility in choosing the energy source that best suits your needs and location.

  9. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep a tankless water heater operating efficiently. This includes descaling to prevent mineral buildup, which can affect performance.

  10. Installation Costs: While tankless water heaters can save money on energy bills over time, they often have a higher upfront cost than traditional tank-style heaters due to the need for specialized installation and venting.

It's important to choose the right size and type of tankless water heater for your household's hot water needs. Factors such as the flow rate, temperature rise, and the number of fixtures or appliances using hot water simultaneously should be considered when selecting a unit. Proper installation and maintenance are also crucial to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Tankless hot water heaters have gained popularity for their efficiency and convenience, especially in homes where hot water demand varies throughout the day.

Product description

This Smart Technology electric tankless water heater is configured as a "whole home" model for climates where incoming water temperature is 62°F and above. The ECO 18 is capable of heating over 2.5 gallons per minute, which is the equivalent of one water saver shower head (with a 1.5 gpm flow) and one sink with a low inlet water temperature of 62°F, and an output setting of 105° F. Two showers emitting no more than 1.5 gpm each can be run simultaneously when incoming water temperature is above 70° F. Digital temperature control allows you to set your temperature in increments of 1°. All tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate and temperature rise, and there is a direct relationship between the two. So if used in a cold area requiring a high temperature rise, it will be more limited in the amount of fixtures (gallons per minute) it can heat at one time compared to a warmer climate. However, when sized properly it will provide endless hot water and only consume the energy needed, giving the user complete control. Prior to purchase and installation please verify this model is the right size for the expected demand and electrical requirements. The ECO 18 requires a minimum 150 amp electrical panel for installation with 40 amp double pole breakers connected to sets of #8 awg wire. Plumbing connections are 3/4" NPT. For additional assistance please feel free to contact our support center at 877-474-6473.

User questions & answers

Question: How do know which size to buy? We will supply two bathrooms, dish washer, clothes washer. What size should I choose
Answer: I noted someone below stating they got the largest one and they can only run one water source at a time. My guess is they installed it wrong by not getting the electric hooked up right, or maybe the unit was just defective, or they live in Alaska. I went under size with an Eco 27 a few years ago because that’s all my electric panel could handle. We have zero issues in the summer. During winter months we can only run one shower at a time and have to slowly fill a tub (maybe 3/4 fill speed). To save as much money as I am on electric bill and have unlimited shower lengths (only 1 person at a time mid-Dec to mid-March) is totally worth it. On here today because I’m thinking of upping my panel size so was thinking of going with a larger one now. Regardless, CCRC’s experience with the largest unit not working is nothing like the experience I’ve had, and again I intentionally undersized mine for the house. The website has a clear chart to explain size you need based on number of water fixtures in your home and ground water temperature.
Question: Can this unit supply a 3,700 sq foot home with 3 1/2 baths
Answer: In the lower states it can, but in the northern states, multiple simultaneous users, it will be overloaded. If you can afford a 3,700 square foot home, then you can place a unit in each appropriate demand zone and be very glad you did. I love mine, live in KY, get great supply when the water is above 60 degrees, and then it slows the flow as the temperature drops. I have dishwasher, washing machine, garden tube, 2 showers, 3 sinks and 4 people. It is better than great in the summer, okay spring and fall, and we are conservative in the winter.
Question: What is the power consumption of this tank-less heater
Answer: The instantaneous power consumption while the hot water is running is quite high (up to 18kW or 27kW depending on which model you’re looking at on this page). However, when no hot water is being used, the power consumption is 0 (or a minuscule amount to run an LED light or something). The total power consumption over the course of several days or longer should be much lower than a tank heater but the short term power usage while the heater is making hot water will be much higher than a tank heater. It’s just that the unit sits idle most of the time while a tank heater will use power fairly frequently even when no hot water is needed as the water in the tank cools off over time and needs to be re-heater fairly constantly
Question: remote
Answer: This unit does not have the ability to have a remote temperature control.

3 Smart Steps for Endless Hot Water

Step 1: Determining your average inlet water temperature is important, this allows you to determine how well your unit will perform in your desired location. A lower inlet water temperature will require a higher kilowatt product.

Step 2: Next you will determine how many applications your unit can run simultaneously at your chosen location inlet water temperature. Tankless electric water heaters are sized for maximum simultaneous use, not maximum fixtures in your home.

Step 3: Determining specifications and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit into your breaker panel.

User questions & answers

Question: Ours has only been in service for less than a year - will not adjust temperature to anything above 85 Deg. F. What do you think is the problem ? kds
Answer: My only guess is that the rheostat (variable resistor) that the temperature adjustment knob is attached to may be faulty. If that isn't it then I don't know. Sorry.
Question: The warrenty says that this unit must be installed by a licensed electrician and plumber, for them to honor the "life time warrenty." why
Answer: Hello Bob, The reason is the same as why an innumerable number of gadgets around the world have that little "warranty void if removed" label. Because getting inside of one requires a certain level of training and expertise. Same with this unit. GadgetsGo is an authorized Ecosmart dealer. Kind regards,HenryGadgetsGo
Question: My house is wired 110V. What additional items do I need to purchase for the conversion
Answer: Just to expand slightly on prior answers, normally a residential service feed is 240 volts between the two incoming hot legs. There is also a neutral leg, which (hopefully) has zero potential with reference to ground. The voltage between either one of the hot legs and the neutral leg is 120 volts. The 120 volt circuits in your house are connected to one or the other of the two hot legs, and only one. An attempt is made to assign circuits to the two hot legs in a way that will roughly balance the load between them. The other side of a 120 volt circuit is connected to the neutral leg. There is additionally a safety ground run with the circuit, which also ties into the panel. Certain devices require more power (work product of current and voltage) than is practical to deliver using a 120 volt circuit. Common examples are your clothes dryer, and your electric stove. These devices are powered by both hot legs, with a difference in potential of 240 volts. This water heater is also such a device.STRONG BUT FRIENDLY WARNING: If you did not already know this, please don't make wiring this water heater your learning opportunity with electricity. Hire someone who knows how to do it right. Cutting corners, especially with higher currents and voltages, can lead to equipment damage, fire, and electrocution. Electricity is not magic, and you can certainly learn how to do many common wiring tasks safely on your own, but today is not the day to begin that journey. You need properly sized components, properly installed, and connected to an adequate service. Also, if you really, really foul up, you could conceivably wind up making that morning shower more energizing than you ever imagined, if you get what I mean. So newly aspiring electricians should go fix their grandmother's favorite table lamp instead. Once they have that working they can use it to to start reading books about electricity, residential wiring, and eventually, books about this stuff: http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=nec+code&sprefix=nec+code%2Caps%2C164 . Of course, you still have to know not to nick conductors when you strip them, and other trade craft like that ; ) . Like almost everything in life that is fun, electricity will hurt you. Sort of like all those people you dated for a while, and then wished later you had never met.
Question: what amp breaker is required
Answer: The National Electrical Code requires conductors and overcurrent protection to be sized at 100% of the manufacturer's branch circuit recommendation for tankless electric water heaters. A 60 amp breaker is the same price as a 40 or 50, it is the wire that costs more. #6 AWG wire is required for a 60 amp circuit. If you undersize the wire it could overheat and catch fire. Protect your family and follow the manufacturer's sizing for this, or any other, electrical device. Your family's lives are worth the extra money. 

User questions & answers

Question: does it come with isolation valves or do you have to order seperately
Answer: This model does come with isolation valves. Thanks
Question: Is warranty void automatically when buying this way? The warranty appears to be void if not purchased by an "authorized dealer
Answer: MyPlumbingStuff is an "Authorized RINNAI Online Reseller". Warranty is valid when purchased through us.
Question: Will this item work with propane
Answer: you would have to change the jets -read the specs-you should be able to order it for either natural gas or propane
Question: I just purchased a new house that has two of these units and it takes about a minute for water to heat, can that be sped up
Answer: Hi Jay, Understand that you have cold water in your pipes that has to be pushed through to your open faucet and discharged before the hot water can get to you. Your Rinnai instantly starts heating your water when you open the faucet but there is all that cold water in the way. The closer your faucet is to the unit the sooner you get the hot water. If you are concerned about water waste, use the cold water to start scrubbing your sink or tub and then rinse with the hot water when it purges the cold sitting there. Your Rinnai saves you a ton of money by being on demand so be patient. Brush you teeth in the cold so no waste also. It is a great unit! John and Joanne

User questions & answers

Question: How many BTUs
Answer: The expansion tank for this heater is not required. Most people already have these installed in their homes but if not then it would be Ok without it as there is a pressure relief valve on top if something happened. GlobalTowne is an authorized Bosch distributor.
Question: What recirculation pump will work with this heater
Answer: A standard flow shower head is around 2.5 gallons per minute. A low flow head is around 1.5 gallons per minute. The recovery rate for a 90 degree temperature rise is 6.8 gallons per hour! So even the 7.5 gallon unit would only provide 4 minutes of shower time before the temp dropped off dramatically. (even at the low flow rate..)
Question: What is wi-fi ready means and what what will you use it for ? also what circ-logic capable means? do you need recirculation pipe for it
Answer: If your bathtub is bigger than your main heater tank, this unit isn't going to do much for you. It will add 2.5, 4, or 7 gallons to the capacity of your main tank, depending on which Bosch unit you buy. The 7 gallon unit requires a specially wired circuit. You will also get a little bit of lukewarm water that was in the line between your main heater and the Bosch unit. Unless your main tank is awfully small and your bathtub massive, the 4 gallon unit should work for you. Maybe a demand type thankless heater in your bathtub hot water feed would be a better choice, but be careful to size it properly for your desired flow rate and temperature rise. Also a tankless is likely to require special wiring.
Question: Does this unit come with a vent kit? Thanks
Answer: When the tap is opened, the hot water in the unit flows out. The colder water that was sitting upstream of the unit, enters the unit to be heated. If the tap remains open, the newly heated water flows out, being replaced eventually, (depending on the distance to the main water heater), with the water from the main water heater. You will probably set the unit temperature to equal the main water heater temperature, if you want to keep a constant temperature, but other scenarios are possible.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it necessary to connect an expansion tank to this heater (for safety purposes)? It states something to that effect in the user manual
Answer: The expansion tank for this heater is not required. Most people already have these installed in their homes but if not then it would be Ok without it as there is a pressure relief valve on top if something happened. GlobalTowne is an authorized Bosch distributor.
Question: would this be able to supply a shower
Answer: A standard flow shower head is around 2.5 gallons per minute. A low flow head is around 1.5 gallons per minute. The recovery rate for a 90 degree temperature rise is 6.8 gallons per hour! So even the 7.5 gallon unit would only provide 4 minutes of shower time before the temp dropped off dramatically. (even at the low flow rate..)
Question: Can be used "in-line with a large hot water source"? Would it help a large bathtub that runs out of hot water before it gets full from main tank
Question: When this heater is connected to the hot water line, what happens with the cold water that was sitting in the pipes

Bosch ThermoTechnology

The Bosch Tronic 3000 T point-of-use electric mini-tanks are available in three compact sizes, which can be wall-hung (bracket included) or floor-mounted. They fit easily under a sink, even in a cabinet space, and because they have a sleek and attractive design, they blend in seamlessly with existing decor when installed in a visible location. Simply tap into the cold water line and install the water heater directly at the sink to provide hot water. Great for a wide range of locations!

Water Where You Need It

Provides hot water quickly at point of use and comes with temperature /pressure relief valve installed - 2.5 and 4 gallon tanks feature a simple 120 VAc plug-in connection (1440 watts).

Quality for Long-Life

Thick CFC-free foam insulation for maximum energy efficiency, glass-lined tank for durability.

Great for Small Spaces

Water heaters are compact and lightweight and can be floor, shelf, or wall mounted (except 7 Gallon) - features a sleek and attractive design to blend seamlessly with decor.

Minimize Wait Time for Hot Water

Waiting for hot water at a sink located far from a primary heating source can be frustrating. Only having access to cold water from a sink is just not useful, and plumbing a hot water line to every sink in a home or business requires time and money. To get hot water where it’s needed, when it’s needed, a better solution is to use the Tronic 3000 T from Bosch: a point-of-use electric mini-tank heater. This heater can supplement a primary water heating source, or be used under a single sink. In fact, the Bosch Tronic 3000 T can be used for three different applications: as a sole water heating source for a single sink, as a supplement to an existing heater located far from the sink, and as a buffer installed in-line with tankless water heaters that experience intermittent cold water, also known as 'cold water sandwiching'. No matter the configuration, there’s minimal stand-by loss from this premium mini-tank water heater.

Product description

"The Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Plus Tankless Water Heater features exclusive Advanced Flow Control German patented technology invented by Stiebel Eltron to automatically maintain water temperature for constant comfort. It’ll reduce flow slightly if hot water demand exceeds capacity to ensure that hot showers will never be interrupted. Tempra 24 Plus will typically use 15-20% less energy compared to conventional electric tank water heaters. Although, it’s possible to save significantly more energy depending on personal home usage habits. The difference is that conventional tank water heaters continually store hot water, and as a result, lose 15%-20% of the total energy consumed to the environment around them. This is called standby heat loss. Tank water heaters that use gas or oil are even less efficient, because they also lose heat through their vents to the outdoors. Our tankless water heaters do not need venting, and will not store hot water, waiting for you to use it. They operate on-demand to provide continuous and endless hot water when you need it, and not waste energy when you don’t. CERTIFICATIONS INCLUDE - ANSI/UL Std. 499, CSA Std. User questions & answers

Question: How can i make tempra trend 24 work with my bosch shx33a05uc/22 dishwasher? the dishwasher will not advance to next cycle. water is not hot enough
Answer: This water heater activates at 0.5 GPM and will heat to your set temperature at the correct flow rate for that set temperature. Please call our Technical Department at 1-800-582-8423 Ext 6 with more details so we can help you better. (for example, does the dishwasher have its own heating element, distance between the 2 units, etc...) Thank you.
Question: Electric panel is ~50 feet from where i want to install the tempra 29 trend. is this distance ok for #8 thhn wire
Answer: The recommended wire is 8/2 and there is not a limit to distance written in the install directions. You need to check with your electrician. Make sure he is state license and insured. We have installed a Tempra 29 and our electrician ran three 8/2's approx. 30' with no question. But check with your electrician and local codes. God bless you and happy New Year.
Question: Is there an installation kit available for this? i am installing in a remote location & plumbing parts are not available? water lines are pvc
Answer: There is no specific installation kit. However, we suggest using flexible braided hose connections that screw onto the hot and cold water for the first 18" or so. These connections are easy to remove to check a filter screen or if needed to work on the unit in general. The connections are 3/4" NPT. Please feel free to call our Technical Support Department at 1-800-582-8423 ext 6 with any questions. Thank You.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: We asked the Manufacturer and they replied: "These are made in Holzminden, Germany"

Question: which models are "condensing" units, please
Answer: I don’t know. But I suggest u look for a different brand. It already failed twice in less than a year and their warranty is a scam. They provide the parts which are pennies and leave out labor.
Question: How does it effect the water pressure, will it change
Answer: It does not effect my water pressure at all. I’ve had it for over a year now
Question: My existing water heater is located next to and shares a flue with the furnace. Can I hook the same way on this
Answer: Hold up there, previous answer, not so fast. It is true that you should not have both the hot water heater and furnace venting directly into the flue, combining the exhaust. However, some people see their vent pipes entering the flue (or chimney wall) and assume they are both releasing the fumes inside the chimney. In some cases, the venting pipes continue separately up the flue. Joseph, if you have two vent pipes entering your flue, there is a chance that both pipes continue separately up the flue and out the top. If that is the case, you may be able to use the existing hot water vent system. When you look at the top of your chimney, do you see two terminations coming out?
Question: How does very cold intake water affect performance
Answer: Sorry to contradict but the temperature of the water going into the water heater will definitely have an effect on the temperature of the water coming out. the water heater needs to provide enough BTUs to heat the volume of water that you need to the water temperature that you want. If the water starts off at a lower temperature it will take more BTUs to get it to the temperature you want. This unit claims to be able to provide 6.6 gallons of hot water per minute but that assumes the water is startling an average temperature. If you have a modern shower head it will only use about 2.5 GPM but if you have second shower going, a hot water faucet open or a clothes washer filling at the same time you will run out of capacity quickly. Rinnai should have tables on their website that shows the ability of the unit to heat water at a variety of starting temperatures to a range of hot water temperatures at a given flow rate.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the temperature output be adjusted to 105F
Answer: Most rinnai tankless weather it is out door or indoor, have a control board to adjust temp and either on or off
Question: Can I use the Rinnai V65EP in Denver, Co? Temperatures during the winter can get below zero
Answer: It can definately be out doors in freezing temps, tho power failure arent good for it while in a freeze, tho keep in mind it will use alot more energy for frost protection, indoor units are safer amd more efficient in this case
Question: Does this unit come with controller? rinnai tech said i needed a mc-91-2us controller? do i need to buy separate
Answer: I bought model V65EN. It came with a wired digital controller. The installer did not run the wire into the house and mount the controller indoors. He simply set the controller at 120 degrees and left the controller inside the unit. If I want to change the temp, I have to take the cover of the unit.
Question: What does the "Low NOx Mean
Answer: Good place to check for info like this is Wikipedia. Here is what they say: Energy efficiencieseditMore tangible cost savings are defined when comparing the energy efficiencies of gas heaters with low NOx emissions with conventional flued types. Gas heaters with emission problems are flued and inherently lose substantial energies in the form of hot flue gases to the atmosphere. In addition, the choice of placement of flued heaters is greatly impaired due to flue installation restrictions. In contrast, dedicated low emission gas heaters do not require a flue system. Furthermore, with the introduction of oxygen depletion sensors and thermostatic controls, they do not place critical reliance on ventilation as previously was the case. These heaters can be positioned more conveniently and centralised to affect optimum warm air distribution. By definition unflued low NOx gas heaters are 100% efficient as all heat energy released from the flame is converted to useful heat.Hope this helps. June

User questions & answers

Question: Water connections :1/2” npt. is this smaller than standard 40gal water heater connectors or same size
Answer: No
Question: What is the function of the part 'Anti electric wall'? What doe it do? Is it install on the inlet or outlet of the heater
Answer: Requires two 40 amp breakers (80). Not 4 (160) you would only have room for this and an oven on 200 amp service. Also if you only have 100 amp service and don't want to upgrade to 200 amp, don't look at these.
Question: What does a red line mean when you first power this heater on
Answer: The RTEX-18 (240 Volt) requires (2) 40 amp breakers and 8 AWG wire.
Question: Do you have a remote? Wifi? Range if inferred? Can it be controlled by a mobile device
Answer: Hello- Sizing an electric tankless is very difficult. I always recommend that you call Rheem at 800-432-8373 to get a suggestion. I want to say this will only keep up with ONLY 1 source of hot water at any one given time. That being said, the RTEX-18 performance ( @240V )- 1.5GPM - 82degree rise 2.0GPM - 62degree rise 2.5GPM - 49degree rise 3.0GPM - 41degree rise So.... what it can keep up with all depends on: -the temp of water coming into the house -the flow rate of each faucet/shower head/washing machine/source of hot water -outlet temp desired I hope this helped :) Ben

It is important to figure out your average inlet water temperature, this determines if you can get hot water of desired temp from the hot water heater. Outlet water temp equals inlet water temp plus temp raise(by the hot water heater).

Test Data

Check the chart to figure out the flow rate suggested for your area and the corresponding outlet water temp to see if it meets your need. For example, if inlet water in your area is 67℉, you are able to get 1.6GPM hot water @ 121℉, if you set temp lower, you are able to get more than 1.6GPM, correspondingly.

Product Parameter

Determining specs and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit onto your breaker panel. We would like to remind you of reading the user manual prior installation and using for the first time.
