As for the clip, the one-way gear (the silver end piece) should be positioned so the flat side is facing outward. The clip fits into the slot and holds the one-way gear in place, with the other side of the clip pointing 90 degrees outward... internet searches should return some pictures the will help visualize what I am describing. The motor includes a diagram, but it's not as good as the installation guide for the whole awning (which goes into good detail about the motor).
