User questions & answers
Question: | Will 1221 tail stock accept #2 Morse taper drill chuck |
Answer: | Yes! Just be sure that the tail stock hole and morse taper are clean, otherwise the #2 morse taper can be difficult to remove... |
Question: | has this lathe have a indexing head |
Answer: | William, yes this lathe has an indexing head. I have not yet used the feature but it is done with a spring loaded pin which you lock into anyone of 24 positions. The spring loaded pin in screwed in once the pin is set to hold it in place.Rich F |
Question: | Is this Ron Swanson approved |
Answer: | Yes, Ron personally blesses each unit as it’s loaded onto a truck. |
Question: | Do you need to move a belt to change speeds? Or is there a dial or switch |
Answer: | This lathe has a variable speed controller, so the speeds may be changed using the simple rotating knob. To provide speed ranges to suit any situation, especially for the more experienced turner, there is a three step pulley. This arrangement allows the variable speed controller to adjust speeds from 60 to 900 rpm on the low step of the pulley, 110 -1800 rpm on the 2nd step (medium), and a high speed range of 220 -3600 rpm on the the 3rd step. The belt need only be changed if you want to move to a different range of speeds. This is a very simple process. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a chuck that is 1"-8tpi female thread (nova 48111), it doesn't fit on this lathe. what adapter should i buy |
Answer: | Buy a 3/4" 16 TPI to 1" 8 TPI adapter. If you further questions go to http://www.woodturningz.com/downloads/w1704_ds.pdf for the specs on this machine. |
Question: | is there an adapter for the face plate for mounting live center chucks? I bought one but won't line up with holes |
Answer: | I'm not sure if they make the adapter to mount on the face plat. I have a 2" diameter three jaw, self centering scroll type chuck that i bought from Amazon that ihave used that works great, but i think that the holes in the face plate is for mounting a backing block to the piece of wood stock to turn a bowl. It says in the manual that you glue the block to the wood your turning and use the holes to screw the block on to face plate. Hope this helped. |
Question: | What size wood stock can it hold? How about something like 12'' long by 8" wide piece of wood |
Answer: | The length it will hold will be dependant upon what chucks you have in the head and tail stock. The bulkier the chucks, the shorter the length it will handle. I'd say it will hold 12" lengths unless your chucks are sizable. I wouldn't try more than 4" width stock unless it was short. Although the lathe may hold the stock, it would be too much for the motor. The intended purpose of this lathe is to make small things like ink pens, Christmas ornaments, small toys like tops or yo-yo's and tool handles etc. If you want to mount 12" X 8" stock you should be looking at full sized lathes. |
Question: | is there anyway to secure to a bench |
Answer: | Yes. It has has three holes in the base that you can bolt it down with. I bolted mine down on a metal stand. It holds it down real solid. Mine is the Shop Fox W1704 also. It is well built. I really like mine. Hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | What’s longest piece of wood i can turn with this lathe |
Answer: | If you are using a standard four prong spur center and with the quill retracted all the way back on the tail stock, you are looking at a piece about fourteen inches. If you are using a chuck ( I have the PSI Barracuda), you are looking at around a 13-1/2" turning. Good luck! |
Question: | Does it come with a Faceplate? If not what type would be best |
Answer: | Yes, it does. Suggest you also get a Jacob's chuck so that you can clamp onto the tenon on the pieces you'll be working on. What it doesn't come with is a knockout rod, for removing the live center. I picked up a 3/8" dowel at the hardware store and it's working fine. |
Question: | Can i make pens and pencils with it |
Answer: | Just make sure you don't over tighten the quill on your tailstock, otherwise you will bend the mandrel, making it useless. |
Question: | Can you turn bowls withs this lathe and does it have the chuck to do so or must you buy it separately |
Answer: | You can turn up to an 8" bowl and still get the tool rest underneath it. You do need to get the chucks separately tho. I'd recommend a chucking system by Nova or PSI to get yourself started. You'll pay a little more up front, but you'll be far better off than getting a bunch of different chucks. |

Answer: | Yes! You just can't buy it on amazon..rockler and woodcraft sell them for around $150. |
Question: | Is it a Morse taper |
Answer: | Yes both the head stock and tail are #2 |
Question: | what is needed with this lathe for pen turning |
Answer: | Basically, you will need a 7mm MT2 mandrel and your tools. When you order your pen kits, make sure you get the bushings and drill bit. Depending on how you finish the pens, you may need a buffing system. For acrylics, get a set of micro pads, they really bring the shine out. I also use a "french polish" and shellac to put a lasting hard coat on the finished product. Good luck and enjoy the lathe. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If these are stainless steel like advertised then why are they coated in oil put in a plastic sealed bag and shipped 1/2 way around the world |
Answer: | I can't comment on why shipping stainless steel is such a perceived issue to you, but even if the calipers are stainless steel, the springs are not. I would venture to guess that is the main reason they are oiled. |
Question: | can you lock in the measurement with these |
Answer: | That is what the nut on the screw is for. It doesn't really lock, if you were to rub the nut on something it could move, and it can spring inward it you push into a hole. |
Question: | stainless steel? NOT |
Answer: | I have no means to test chromium content of this metal, but by 2 factors, I would venture to say that they ARE stainless steel. 1. They have been in my shop thru summer rain and heat, it is now February the 1st and there are still no visible signs of rust which would certainly be present on carbon steel materials under these storage conditions. 2. By all appearances (visually) they are comparable to any other stainless steel items I have used throughout my 45 years of woodworking. I would admit that, also visually, they may have a lower chromium content in their alloy than a comparably sized more expensive set, but they do the job I purchased them for at price much less than is really needed for my processes. Certainly, a $500 set would be nice, but then I'd have to jack my prices up, or sell 10 times more product to compensate, when these work just fine. |
Question: | It's nice to know how long they are, and if I measured the pic..., but the maximum measurement is a more useful number. How wide does each get |
Answer: | When it comes to calipers, digital or manual the number ie; 8", 6" etc. represents the opening of the caliper. This set of calipers all open little more than. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the maximum degree the headstock can swing for outboard turning |
Answer: | The headstock does not swivel (or swing) at all. The headstock can be released and can slide down the bed to the far end. The oversize banks can then hang out past the lathe bed. This lathe can swing a 22 inch blank over the bed. The advantage to this, is you never have to realign the headstock to the tailstock. I have not seen any sort of outboard tool rest from Shop Fox. Other manufactures do make them. I love my W1852. |
Question: | Does this lathe have an optional bed extension which will fit it |
Answer: | It has 42 inches between centers. I have this lathe, enjoy it very much. I have not found any type bed extension. The headstock can be easily moved down the bed and the tasilstock removed, to give better access for bowl work. Bill |

SHOP FOX W1852 VARIABLE SPEED WOOD LATHE
Wood turners who enjoy making large bowls, vases, furniture pieces, and other large-diameter projects require power, capacity and high-torque to meet their performance needs. You get all three and then some with this burly lathe that weighs in at over a quarter-of-a-ton. With a 3 HP, 3-phase motor that runs off of single-phase power, electronic variable speed control, 22" of swing, and 1-1/4" x 8 TPI RH spindle, this lathe delivers the goods to gratify even the most discerning of turners.
Variable Speed Range
This beast features a variable speed range of 100 – 3200 RPM, perfect for both large and small turning projects and finishing.
Changing Speed Ranges
The pulley belt configurations provide two speed ranges. To maximize the spindle torque, use low spindle speed range for spindle feeds of 1200 RPM or less.
Cam-Action Clamping System
Shop Fox W1852 headstock is equipped with a cam-action clamping system to secure it to the lathe bed. When the lever is tightened, a locking plate lifts up underneath the bed and secures the headstock in place. The headstock can be positioned anywhere along the lathe bed.
Adjusting Tailstock
The tailstock adjusts in the same manner as the headstock. Make sure both the headstock and the tailstock are firmly locked to the lathe bed.
Outboard Turning
Outboard turning is a variation of faceplate turning and is accomplished with the headstock positioned so the faceplate is not directly over the bed, allowing a larger turning capacity than the swing specification of the lathe.
When outboard turning, ALWAYS use a floor-mounted tool rest and keep tool in contact with rest during all turning operations.
