13 best air die grinders
Air die grinders are versatile and powerful tools commonly used in various industries, workshops, and DIY projects. They belong to the family of die grinders, which are handheld rotary tools designed for cutting, grinding, polishing, and shaping materials like metal, wood, plastic, and more. Here are some key features and information about air die grinders:
Power Source: Air die grinders are typically powered by compressed air, hence the name "air die grinder." They rely on an air compressor to generate the power needed for their operation. This makes them suitable for heavy-duty tasks, as they can provide consistent power without overheating.
Versatility: These tools are highly versatile and can accommodate a wide range of attachments and accessories, such as grinding wheels, sanding drums, polishing pads, and cutting discs. This versatility allows them to perform various tasks with precision.
Speed Control: Many air die grinders come with variable speed settings, allowing users to adjust the tool's RPM (rotations per minute) to suit different tasks. This feature is especially useful when working with different materials and applications.
Compact and Ergonomic Design: Air die grinders are typically compact and lightweight, making them easy to handle and maneuver. Their ergonomic design ensures comfortable operation, even during extended use.
Safety Features: To ensure safety during operation, most air die grinders are equipped with safety locks and guards to protect users from accidental start-ups and debris.
Applications: Air die grinders find applications in various industries, including automotive, metalworking, woodworking, and construction. They are commonly used for tasks such as:
- Metal Grinding: Removing burrs, smoothing welds, and shaping metal components.
- Woodworking: Shaping and carving wood, as well as sanding and polishing wooden surfaces.
- Automotive Work: Deburring and cleaning engine parts, cylinder heads, and other automotive components.
- Mold and Die Making: Precision work in mold and die production.
- Detail Work: Performing intricate and fine detail work in various materials.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep air die grinders in good working condition. This includes cleaning, lubricating, and ensuring the proper functioning of the air compressor.
Safety Precautions: Users should always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and hearing protection, when operating air die grinders. Additionally, they should follow manufacturer instructions and safety guidelines.
In summary, air die grinders are powerful and versatile tools used in a wide range of applications. They are prized for their precision and efficiency, making them indispensable in many professional and DIY settings where precision and control are required for material removal and shaping tasks.

User questions & answers
Question: | Required CFM |
Answer: | It’ll average about 3 cfm. It’s happiest between 5-7. Great tool. Mine seem to last forever. I use them in the shop on the shop compressor and in my service trucks at a lower cfm. No problem with either setup, just be sure and keep your tools properly lubricated, and free of “wet” air. |
Question: | How do I grease this grinder? I don't see a fitting for a grease gun |
Answer: | As an air tool it gets greased with air tool oil added to the air inlet |
Question: | Is this small enough to fit inside of a 3" pipe |
Answer: | The die grinder itself is. I don't know what kind of attachment you have. |
Question: | What is the RPM? Can you vary the speed |
Answer: | 27,000 rpm wide open. Yes, you can vary the speed with the trigger. I definitely recommend this die grinder it's very smooth and powerful! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you know how much grease to put in the head or what kind or the needle size |
Answer: | There are small pump grease guns specifically for air tools. They are available through Ingersol Rand, and other companies. The grease for this particular line of IR tools should be from IR. It’s safe to put in about three good shots of grease. Don’t overdo it. Seal damage can occur and reduce the life of the tool. |
Question: | Cfm requirements?? Anyone |
Answer: | 3 cfm to operate, 18 cfm draw over long pulls. |
Question: | Ingersoll and rand suppose to be the best of the best.. Are these just cheap knockoffs or these real deal |
Answer: | No they are not knockoffs, its the real deal. I went through a few cheap ones that didn`t last. This grinder is rock solid and I can see it lasting me forever. Highly recommend! |
Question: | How do you put grease in the grease port |
Answer: | Where the tool transitions 90 degrees, there is a little raised ball on the one side...it's spring loaded. You need a pointed grease adapter, a needle but not the hypodermic needle...a chainsaw grease gun works well. Oil through the air port never gets to the 90 degree portion of the tool. |

Answer: | The shield on the angle grinder is not removable without tools. |
Question: | Does this one have the black painted logo like the 90 degree cp875 or is it exactly like the one in the picture |
Answer: | That is a very hard question to answer. You might check the I.R. website to see if they list DB level. To me, it sounds like every other one that I have heard. For short uses, it doesn't bother me at all. If I were going to run it for hours, I would add hearing protection. |
Question: | Is the exhaust front or rear |

Question: | Hello. i have 2.0 hp compressor, 4.6 gallon, 6.40 cfm @ 40 psi, 5.30 cfm @ 90 psi. i need that tool to clean rust from brass. do you think that is ok |
Answer: | Whether your brass was fitted to black iron and the rust built up that way, you have lime/scale/mineral build up, or heavy oxidation you should be able to remove it using this grinder and your compressor combo. Your compressor is on the small side and will run nonstop. The tool will also be underpowered compared to running it on a larger compressor but with the proper choice in abrasive or bit you should be able to get the job done. Depending on how heavy the build up is and how important a fine finish is on the brass, you may need several different abrasives. The short answer is yes, this gun and your compressor are less than ideal matches, but you should be able to work with them. |
Question: | I have a 29 gal 2 hp compressor rated 5.9 scfm @ 90psi. will this be enough for the cfm requirements? says above that average air consumption 6 but |
Answer: | It should have a enough air because of thr volume of air you have. |

Question: | How much cfm does this die grinder consume? my compressor will put out 2.6 cfm at 90 psi, will this be enough |
Answer: | This tool requires 22 SCFM @ Load. In other words, to run this tool continuously, non-stop, you would need a compressor pump capable of running 22cfm @ 90psi. In reality, As long as you have a large enough tank, you will be able to run this tool with no problem for several minutes continuously. Very few home shop users will have a compressor this large. I run this on a 5hp 60 gallon single stage with no problem. |
Question: | What is the warranty coverage on this die grinder? Is there extended coverage available |
Answer: | Weird. I just checked my toolbox and my 90 degree cp875 is red with no black logo. I checked my purchase history and it shows a black logo. Must be something new they are doing to the 90 degree models. However, the straight grinder pictured has no black logo. |
Question: | What is the warranty coverage on this die grinder |
Answer: | the exhaust is out the front |
