13 best jack hammers
A jackhammer is a powerful handheld or pneumatic tool used primarily for breaking up hard surfaces such as concrete, rock, or asphalt. It is commonly used in construction, demolition, and excavation projects. Jackhammers are a type of demolition hammer, and they are often referred to as hammer drills or simply demolition hammers. Here are some key features and information about jackhammers:
Types of Jackhammers:
- Pneumatic Jackhammers: These are powered by compressed air and are often used in heavy-duty applications. They are preferred for their high impact power and durability.
- Electric Jackhammers: These are powered by electricity and are more suitable for lighter tasks. They are relatively quieter and require less maintenance than pneumatic ones.
Components:
- Jackhammers typically consist of a handle or grip, a motor (electric or pneumatic), a piston, a striking mechanism, and a chisel or bit that makes contact with the material being broken.
Applications:
- Jackhammers are used for a variety of purposes, including breaking concrete, pavement, or rocks in construction and demolition work.
- They are often used in road construction, mining, tunneling, and concrete removal.
Safety Considerations:
- Proper safety gear, including eye and ear protection, is crucial when operating a jackhammer due to the loud noise and flying debris.
- Operators should be trained in the correct handling and operation of jackhammers to prevent accidents and injuries.
Types of Chisels and Bits:
- Jackhammers can be equipped with different types of chisels and bits depending on the specific job. Flat chisels are used for breaking up concrete, while point chisels are used for digging and trenching.
Ergonomics:
- Many modern jackhammers are designed with features that reduce vibration and operator fatigue, making them more comfortable to use for extended periods.
Maintenance:
- Regular maintenance, such as lubrication and cleaning, is essential to ensure the longevity and efficiency of jackhammers.
Hammer Drills vs. Jackhammers:
- Hammer drills, while similar in appearance, are designed for drilling into hard surfaces, such as concrete, rather than breaking them apart. They use a combination of rotation and percussion to create holes, making them more versatile for drilling tasks.
Power Source:
- Jackhammers come in both corded and cordless (battery-powered) options, offering flexibility in terms of mobility and access to power sources.
Sizes and Weights:
- Jackhammers vary in size and weight, with heavier models designed for heavy-duty demolition work and lighter models for more precision tasks.
In summary, jackhammers are versatile and powerful tools commonly used in construction and demolition projects to break apart hard materials like concrete and rock. They come in various types and sizes, with specific chisels and bits for different applications.Proper safety precautions and maintenance are essential when using jackhammers to ensure safety and performance.

Question: | Tool weight=35lb, compared to 70lb for a similar tool with less amperage. Does this result in more handle vibration and less impact force at chisel |

User questions & answers
Question: | Rotella Diesel engine oil |
Answer: | More amps or watts usually bigger motor. Bigger motor means bigger hammer. Every tool has its place depends on the task at hand. I used the one I bought for a driveway and it hit good and hard. |
Question: | What shank size is it? 1-1/8 or |
Answer: | I purchased it in March 2015. I used it to dig a sump to install a sump pump, as well as dig a french drain, and several drainage ditches in clay soil. It gave out about a year or 2 later while breaking up a concrete pad an above-ground pool used to sit on. It was always oiled, and after disassembling it, I guess that a part was being worn down as it spun, but I dunno much about electric motors. It just looked worn down in parts, so that's what I think happened. All in all, the tool costs about as much as a day-and-a-half rental, which I got much more than that. So now, 3 years from the first purchase, I'm ordering it again. I expect to get plenty more than a day and a half out of it, but it won't last forever. I'm happy enough with it to do it again. |
Question: | Is there a website that i can look at to maintain the hammer |
Answer: | I weighed the components of this 2200 watt jack hammer on a shipping scale, and here is the breakdown:Main electric hammer unit by itself (without installed bit): 31 poundsChisel bit: 3 poundsBull bit: 3 poundsPlastic enclosure with the 3 included wrenches: 8 pounds |
Question: | Our yard is full or rock. How would this work on rock |
Answer: | No. Although these are 1-1/8 hex shank chisels they are the ones that have a smaller diameter cylindrical portion at the top where it goes into the tool. The "normal" 1-1/8 hex chisels are a continuous hexagon all the way. They're not interchangeable even though the sizes are the same. However, the included ones have held up quite well. Even so, they're relatively easy to find. Amazon carries compatible chisels as does the local harbor freight stores. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this brake up a concrete driveway |
Answer: | No, 110 |
Question: | is this exact same as the other red one by Xtremepower that cost more money |
Answer: | Mine did not have any instructions or manual, I found some decent videos on youtube that explain how to set up and operate. |
Question: | What is the weight of the demolition hammer by itself |
Answer: | I was fine using it just under 100'. Rule of thumb ( I am not an electrician) is if you use the same ga. of extension cord as the product you should be ok? 200' is a long way though? |
Question: | How many amps? I can't imagine this is really 2200 watts, b/c it wouldn't run properly on a 20 amp circuit |
Answer: | Yes there are tamper attachments available. You can find it on Amazon with search terms "demolition jack - tamper shank". Check to make sure it will fit your make and model. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what floor scrapers work with this hammer |
Answer: | It depends how many sq feet you are trying to brake up and how tick is your driveway. I think this device can be used for braking up a driveway but you will have to work much harder then with a big heavy jack hammer. I have used it on rocky soil for about 20 hours and for that this works great. |
Question: | do you have bit to drive inch and half black iron pipe |
Answer: | I think it is...for what it’s worth, this one works great I’m very happy with mine. It cost about the same money to rent one around here. I am able to run it on my small quiet 2000 watt Yamaha generator...so handy |
Question: | What size breaker is recommended for this unit |
Answer: | THE HAMMER WEIGHS 30 LBS. WITHOUT THE CHISEL. GOOD LUCK WORKS WELL!! |
Question: | Anyone had experience with this unit driving 8 ft ground rods in clay/rocky ground? How effective |
Answer: | Yes, it is 2200W , 110V, 20amp machine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this came with breake tool and dolly |
Answer: | All electric motor require 2 carbon brush contacts. The one I ordered came with a set of 2, but I have not used it enough to need any maintenance yet. |
Question: | Do you have 220 volts version ? Thanks |
Answer: | Absolutely. I have used it to break up 150 linear feet of concrete footing that ranges from 3" to 6" thick. My personal preference is to use the flat bit, not the pointed bit. |
Question: | Will this work for driving stakes (obviously with a different attachment than what comes standard) or would the collar prevente a cup drive bit? Thank |
Answer: | I bought the tr89105 which came with the point and flat chisel to serve my purpose. I added the tr89102 spade shovel thinking I would need it to break up soil and never really used it. I agree with you to get the tr89105 and add accessories if you need them. Great Product. Two years and still a BEAST! |
Question: | It says tool only under style name. Does this item also contain the two wheel cart and 4 bits |
Answer: | While the weight and power of the demolition hammer would make you think it would need a heavy cord, actually I have never had a 14/3 gauge extension cord ever even heat up. I think a 12/3 might be better, but I find I am actually pulling the trigger less than half the time, and spend most of the time repositioning for the next break. So I don't think it matters much. It is not constantly on like a saw, compressor, welder, etc. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What voltage on 3600 watt version |
Answer: | I'm surprised that it didn't come with a full bottle of oil; ours did. I don't remember what type itr uses. The manual should answer your question. We are very happy with the jackhammer. I works very well. |
Question: | I have to chisel garage concrete floors occasionally at work but just a couple inch area, can this be used to just knock out an inch or two as needed |
Answer: | Dear Customer, Thank you for your question. We usually provide a 3-month warranty on this product. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions. Best wishes, VIVOHOME Customer Care |
Question: | This says 3600w which is 30 amps at 120v. is this a 240v/50hz tool with a 120v/60hz plug |
Answer: | I had one delivered but sent it back. I, nor several of my construction buddies could figure out how the chisels/attachments could seat. There is a pin of sorts that probably was defective, because we could not get it to engage. The chisels that came with it were shorter in length than their own manual indicated. Contacting the Seller was useless, asked them three very simple questions, no viable answer to one and no answer at all to the other two. I was able to measure the chisels and determine they are a pretty common 1 1/8 th inch with single groove. You should be able to procure longer chisels fro TR industrial (they advertise other items here) or match the type you want with the other manufacturers who carry large varieties of accessories. Vivohome probably won't have them, however I am not sure. I did ask them but received no answer. |
Question: | Can this be used for breaking limestone? I am digging holes for fence posts |
Answer: | Dear customer, Thank you for reflecting this issue. There's a mistake on the manual and product description. We've contacted our product department to revise this issue. Your item is totally safe as a whole. Please no worry about the use. Thank you again. Best, VIVOHOME Customer Care |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use a smaller hammer to remove 4-5” concrete pad |
Answer: | 120 volts as I read. |
Question: | Will it penetrate basalt rock in a timely manner |
Answer: | This may be difficult for such a small area of an inch or two. You'll have to use a smaller chisel to carve out whatever area you need. Score it like perforated paper and slowly take out the broken pieces. Don't rush. |
Question: | Would this tool drive ground rods in rocky soil |
Answer: | No, its 120 volt, regular USA plug. I thought the same thing as you when i saw 3600 watts. I researched it and 3600 watts is a theoretical instantaneous peak. I connected my hammer to a power meter and during normal operation of breaking up a concrete floor the continuous power draw was only 250-350 watts. In fact , I could not force my hammer to draw more than 500 watts. I don't know what one would do to make it pull 3600 watts! |
Question: | is the body made of steel or plastic |
Answer: | It will break rock. If you are breaking solid, thick limestone, it may be a little tough going. I'm not sure whether a 35-lb would be sufficient, or if a 70-lb hammer would be better for you, but this will break rock. A lot of folks, myself included, have had some issues, likely with an o-ring, where the hammer leaks oil from above the chisel. But the hammer itself continues to work and has good power. |
