12 best gluten free flours
Gluten-free flours are types of flours that do not contain gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and their derivatives. These flours are essential for individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity who need to avoid gluten in their diet. They are also used in gluten-free baking and cooking to create a variety of dishes. Here are some common gluten-free flours:
Rice Flour:
- Rice flour is one of the most widely used gluten-free flours. It is made from finely ground rice and is available in both white and brown varieties. Rice flour is versatile and suitable for a wide range of recipes, including baking, thickening sauces, and making rice noodles.
Corn Flour:
- Corn flour is made from ground corn kernels and is commonly used as a thickening agent in soups, stews, and sauces. It is also used in baking for items like cornbread and corn tortillas.
Almond Flour:
- Almond flour is made from finely ground blanched almonds. It has a mild, nutty flavor and is often used in gluten-free baking to create moist and tender cakes, cookies, and muffins.
Coconut Flour:
- Coconut flour is made from dried coconut meat that has been ground into a fine powder. It has a mild coconut flavor and is often used in gluten-free and grain-free baking. It is highly absorbent, so recipes typically require more moisture when using coconut flour.
Chickpea Flour (Gram Flour):
- Chickpea flour is made from ground dried chickpeas. It is commonly used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines for making dishes like pakoras, socca, and flatbreads.
Tapioca Flour (Tapioca Starch):
- Tapioca flour is made from the starchy roots of the cassava plant. It is used as a thickening agent in gluten-free recipes and is often included in gluten-free flour blends.
Potato Flour:
- Potato flour is made from dehydrated potatoes and is used in gluten-free baking for adding moisture and texture to recipes. It can also be used as a thickener in soups and gravies.
Sorghum Flour:
- Sorghum flour is milled from sorghum grains and has a mild, slightly sweet flavor. It is used in gluten-free baking for making bread, cakes, and muffins.
Buckwheat Flour:
- Despite its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat and is naturally gluten-free. Buckwheat flour is used in making pancakes, noodles, and soba noodles. It has a distinctive nutty flavor.
Quinoa Flour:
- Quinoa flour is made from ground quinoa seeds. It is high in protein and is often used in gluten-free baking for its nutritional benefits.
When using gluten-free flours, it's important to note that they may have different properties and moisture-absorbing capabilities compared to wheat flour. Therefore, it may be necessary to adjust recipes and experiment to achieve the desired texture and taste in gluten-free dishes. Gluten-free flours are a crucial component of gluten-free cooking and baking and have made it possible for those with dietary restrictions to enjoy a wide variety of foods.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the ingredients |
Answer: | Sweet White Rice Flour, Whole Grain Brown Rice Flour, Potato Starch, Whole Grain Sweet White Sorghum Flour, Tapioca Flour, Xanthan Gum |
Question: | What is the difference between this and Bob's red-label baking flour |
Answer: | The red label flour has garbanzo bean flour in it. I could not handle that way my end products came out with the red label flour. That garbanzo bean flavor just overpowered almost everything I baked especially any sweet baked goods, just bitter as. Will only get the blue label one from now on.... plus the blue label has xanthan gum. |
Question: | Can you make this in a bread machine |
Answer: | We asked Bob's Red Mill and their response was, "Our 1 to 1 Baking Flour is best used in pastries like muffins, quick breads, and cookies. It has a low protein content and does not work well as a bread flour. You can use it to make Pizza Dough though." |
Question: | Do you like this blend for cookies, brownies, cakes, etc. - sweet treats |
Answer: | For baked goods like cookies ,brownies ,etc it works well. I have even made zucchini bread with it. Does not work well with regular bread though. The best gluten free flour out there. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is a typical expiration date for people? Seems odd to buy something that expires in just a few months |
Answer: | Thank you for your question and your interest. Namaste Foods products are blended fresh before packaging and shipping with a one year shelf life if stored well sealed in a cool, dry location as you would any dry goods. To extend that time, you can store well sealed in the freezer bringing to room temperature prior to using in baking or cooking. We hope this helps! |
Question: | Does someone hase a good bread recipe with this flour?Thank you |
Answer: | Thank you for your question! We do have several recipes for bread using this product we hope will help. This is for our Granny's Gluten Free Oven-baked Bread: https://namastefoods.com/blogs/recipes/pancakes-with-homemade-whipped-cream and our bread machine version: https://namastefoods.com/blogs/recipes/grannys-gluten-free-breadmaker-bread as well as several others on our website. Please feel to contact us at [email protected] if we can be of further help. |
Question: | Has anyone used this flour in a pasta maker? On a side note-their GF brownie mix is amazing |
Answer: | We have made pasta with it. Tastes great, and holds together like the gluten flours do. I really like it for pasta. It does have a lighter sweeter taste, so you may need to compensate if you are making a savory dish. We have used it as spaghetti with marinara. Ended up just using a little extra herbs in the sauce, worked great. |
Question: | How is this flour for making pie crust |
Answer: | It's excellent. I used it to make a pecan pie and a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, and everyone loved them. There was virtually no difference in taste or texture. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is there a Proposition 65 Warning? How much mg/g of lead etc is there in the teff |
Answer: | Don't know. You can contact Anthony's. They will be better abled to answer your question. |
Question: | How does this flour compare to bob's red mill teff flour? is it a finer or coarser grind? is it certified gluten free |
Answer: | I really liked the product. I haven't used Bobs red mill teff products. Teff grain is deceiving because it looks like teff flour to the eye, but it is coarser. I use Anthonys in bread products and it works fine. Seems pretty fine compared to other brands I've used. It is a pseudo grain so its gluten free. Having said that, it is certified gluten free. |
Question: | Is this pure teff or mixed with other flour |
Answer: | Hi there, Our Teff Flour consists of pure, uncut, unadulterated 100% Teff. No other item is mixed into our Teff Flour. Enjoy! |
Question: | Product image says store 32 - 40 degrees F and 50 - 60 % relative humidity so where do you store it |
Answer: | I paid no attention to that recommendation. I have stored mine in the original bag in my pantry with no problems. It's a great product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used as a substitute for regular flour in a bread recipe for a bread maker |
Answer: | I've used it as a cup for cup substitute for all my old recipes and works great so I don't see why it wouldn't in a bread machine. |
Question: | does anyone know the difference between this one and the one by gfJules? I like the gfJules one, but this one is less expensive |
Answer: | Gfjules uses corn flour, and corn starch, better batter does not use either of these. I’ve been using this flour for last 5 years and it’s a wonderful cup for cup replacement for wheat flour. I have even been able to make my Grandmother’s WWII cake with this flour, every other gluten free flour failed on this cake! |
Question: | Trying to find a GF flour that doesn't leave the food gritty. Any suggestions |
Answer: | I find that Better Batter Gluten-Free flour is not gritty at all. I think it is one of the best gluten free flours on the market. |
Question: | what are the ingredients |
Answer: | The ingredients in Better Batter are, rice flour, brown rice flour, tapioca starch, potatoe starch, xanthan gum, and pectin ( lemon derivative ). |

Question: | How do we know that this flour has not been treated with sulfites? FDA regulations do not require manufacturer to list if small amounts are used |
Answer: | Anthony's Organic Coconut Flour is made from freshly harvested coconuts to preserve natural levels of lauric acid and vitamin E. Our process never includes sulfites or any other processing aid so that you can enjoy our coconut flour with its natural benefits.Best,-Anthony's Staff |
Question: | Country of origin? specifically, where is this product grown or sourced?? where is the coconut flour made |
Answer: | package states grown in the philippines. |
Question: | Does this flour make all your baked goods taste like coconut? What does it taste like |
Answer: | Hello, i have made pancakes, brownies and cookies with this flour and won't ever use regular flour again, and no it doesn'tA change the taste of what you make, this is so great for people who are diabetic or just want to go lower carb...BAKE AWAY!!! |
Question: | The header list this as non-gmo but i don't see that anywhere on the package. could the seller please verify that it is a nom-gmo product? thanks |
Answer: | @ Michael M: While there are technically no GMO coconuts (not in the genetically modified pest resistant sense anyway) you are wrong that corn, soy and canola are the only GMO crops. What about cotton, papaya, sugarbeets, squash and alfalfa? We also have gmo farmed salmon, and biotech apples and potatoes are quickly moving along the regulatory pipeline heading for certain approval (and might already be approved). BTW, these crops are ALL modified in some way to resist pests either through Roundup-ready resistance or through BT toxins - they are NOT merely modified through hybridization. (And while we're on the subject, hybridization is not entirely harmless either but that's for another discussion.) Your insistence that GMO questions are related to "GMO nonsense" makes you appear as either a biotech shill or simply as ignorant. People SHOULD be asking, and manufacturers should boldly state non-gmo on the label. It's impossible for the public, purposely kept too busy working to notice the Monsanto/FDA/USDA revolving doors, to keep up with what is and what is not yet genetically modified. I think someone needs to heed his own I'll-stated advice and do a little research. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Need to know: are lactose, gluten, chickpeas in any of your flour mixes? Strongly allergic user |
Answer: | Long Grain Rice Flour, Potato Starch, Sorghum Flour, Soy Flour, Tapioca Starch, Xanthan Gum= from her website for the Tuscany Bread flour. Please note that to make the rise on breads you will still need to use yeast which is a wheat product, but there is no gluten in yeast. I am highly allergic to any part of the wheat plant, so I can not do any breads or pastries containing yeast. Just to let you know, I LOVE HER FLOURS!! I use the Sydney blend all the time. They are the best on the market. She specifically designs each flour type to perform the necessary texture and taste for the different types baked goods. I found out long ago "cup 4 cup" gluten free flours don't always replicate well. Orly's specific flours are designed to replicate the texture and taste of that specific wheat based flour baked good. Worth the money! |
Question: | Which flour would be best for biscuits |
Answer: | For sweet biscuits I would recommend the London Blend. For savory biscuits I would recommend the Tuscany Blend! |
Question: | Has anyone used the manhattan blend for a cake? i want to use a gluten free flour, but the others have soy |
Answer: | Yes! Although it is not intended for cake, we have some customers who also can't eat Soy and they love using the Manhattan Blend in their cake and cookie recipes. |
Question: | can you use a bread machine to make bread? how does it turn out |
Answer: | You can use a bread machine. Some of the newer machines have a gluten free setting, so use that if you have the option. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many loaves of bread does this make |
Answer: | I get the flour since the can makes 1 loaf. This way I can do a lot more. |
Question: | Is the cornbread sweet |
Answer: | I don't find it really that sweet at all and not too dry either - really light and moist. I read somewhere on Julesâ site that you could add 1/4 cup sugar to it if you liked it sweeter. |
Question: | Are there recipes included |
Answer: | There are 2 recipe's on the can. gfJules has her own website with all kinds of gf recipe's.All her products are amazing. |
Question: | Can you really make tortillas out of this? I have never found a gf flour that makes good tortillas |
Answer: | And likely you've been burned by other "all purpose" flours that made promises they just could never keep with their gritty, rice-based flour. gfJules Flour is totally different. Look at the ingredients. Then compare with the other flours you'll find on the market. Those others use the cheapest ingredient they can find (brown rice flour), and call it 'all purpose.' You've probably seen firsthand that's just not the case. There are 100 5-star reviews on the gfJules site from folks, like you, who thought they'd never enjoy 'real' food again. And then they gave gfJules a shot, and realized it's possible. Jules' tortilla recipe is on her site, along with 400 other free recipes, all that use her one, truly all-purpose gluten free flour. Your search is over, Jeanne! |

All Gluten Free Flours Are NOT Created Equal

Except, it makes for some dry, gritty and nearly inedible baked goods. Luckily you’ve found the world’s best gluten free flour. Now all you have to do is buy it, and restore your faith in baking and having delicious baked goods again … just like you remember.

Question: | What is the expiration date |
Answer: | For different sellers, it can be different. For those, we sell (ECODESIGN-US) the expiration date 23 Sep 2021 |
Question: | it says 25 pack is that correct |
Answer: | This product is a 25 POUND package. I was so happy to purchase this product in a large bulk! I divided into 2.5 pound packages and put them in the freezer. My cost savings over buying small packages at the store is a solid 50% savings. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What packaging does the flour come in? Several plastic bags? If so, are they the resealable bags, and what size |
Answer: | It is one bag as pictured... It is a paper type bag that is not resealable. Other smaller packaging options are available for this product from various suppliers, but I don't think they are on smaller resealable bags either. |
Question: | How can this be .01/oz? Has anyone done the math? My husband calculated a price for 25# at $79 and it was well over this. Who did this figuring |
Answer: | Amazon's internal calculations calculate the cost per pound. I'm sorry we can't change this. Yes, their math is definitely off - at .16 cents a pound - the 25 lbs. would be $4. YIKES |
