14 best air hammers
An air hammer, also known as an air chisel or pneumatic hammer, is a power tool used in various construction and demolition tasks. It operates by using compressed air to create a rapid, repetitive hammering or chiseling motion. Here's what you need to know about air hammers:
Operation: Air hammers rely on compressed air as their power source. When air is supplied to the tool, it drives a piston or hammer mechanism back and forth rapidly, allowing it to impact a chisel or point, which is attached to the tool's business end.
Versatility: Air hammers are versatile tools suitable for a wide range of applications. They are commonly used in construction, demolition, automotive repair, metalworking, and more. Their ability to deliver high-impact blows makes them effective for tasks like chipping away concrete, breaking up rock, removing old tile or mortar, and shaping or sculpting metal.
Chisel Attachments: Air hammers typically accommodate various chisel attachments, allowing users to select the appropriate tool bit for the specific task. Common chisel attachments include flat chisels, point chisels, gouging chisels, and more.
Power and Speed: The power and speed of an air hammer can vary depending on the model and size. Some air hammers are designed for light-duty tasks, while others are heavy-duty and capable of delivering significant force. Users can often control the intensity of the blows by adjusting the air pressure.
Comfort and Ergonomics: Many air hammers are designed with ergonomic features such as comfortable grips and vibration-dampening mechanisms to reduce user fatigue during prolonged use.
Safety Considerations: Safety precautions are important when using air hammers. Users should wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, ear protection, and gloves. Additionally, it's crucial to maintain a firm grip on the tool and keep it away from the body to prevent accidental injuries.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep an air hammer in good working condition. This includes lubricating the tool to prevent wear and tear, checking for air leaks, and replacing worn-out or damaged chisel attachments.
Air Compressor Requirements: To operate an air hammer, you'll need access to a suitable air compressor capable of delivering the required air pressure and volume. The compressor's specifications should match the tool's requirements to ensure optimal performance.
Brand Variations: Various tool manufacturers produce air hammers, including well-known brands like Ingersoll Rand, Chicago Pneumatic, and DEWALT. The choice of brand and model should align with the specific needs of the job.
In summary, air hammers are powerful and versatile tools used in construction, demolition, and various other industries. They operate using compressed air to deliver rapid, high-impact blows through a variety of chisel attachments.Proper safety precautions and maintenance are essential when using air hammers to ensure safe and effective operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used on tie rods and ball joints |
Answer: | Yes, has plenty of power to handle suspension parts. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | This Ingersoll Rand Air Hammer and Chisel Set is made in Taiwan. |
Question: | How do I assemble it out of the box? This is my first air hammer and it doesn't tell me anything in the printed materials |
Answer: | The "tip" if you will is basically a quick (dis)connect attachment for the tips that came with it. Put that on and use the allen screws built into it to tighten it really good. Then you just grab it and slide it down towards the hammer itself, which allows you to insert the tips, then let go and they should be locked in. They won't be locked in tight, because otherwise the hammer isn't able to do it's job and move them, but you should be unable to pull them back out without sliding down the collar again. |
Question: | I've got a 2cfm @ 90 psi porter cable compressor. will that be sufficient to power this tool enough to loosen the fan clutch (3 seconds?)on my truck |
Answer: | Nope it will not. The specs say "average consumption 4cfm." This means at zero load basically holding it in your hand and pulling the trigger it'll use 4cfm at 90psi. Under load like chiseling out a stuck wheel bearing I've measured mine using 15cfm at 90psi. My 80 gallon continuous duty Ingersoll Rand compressor runs it fine but it's 7.5hp at 240v and is rated for 20cfm at 175psi which I regulate down to 90. My Ingersoll Rand gas powered dual tank "contractor" compressor barely runs it at 11cfm at 90psi. The truck bed mounted gas compressor is the only other one that runs it very well. Manufacturers will never tell you what tools use under load and will deceive the uninformed with specs like "average cfm consumption". I'm not knocking Ingersoll though as they have top notch products it's an industry practice / standard. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What’s the difference between the 119 max and the 123 max |
Answer: | Yes mine came with a "SoluM" brand SLU10 USB charger with 100-240V input at 50-60Hz 0.50 A and 5.0V DC output 2.0A |
Question: | Can I put 150 psi air on it |
Answer: | Dear Customer This camera needs a wifi connection. I think there are better options for that purpose. Best Regards Soltech Security |
Question: | Is the air consumption controllable, like a variable speed for lite or heavy work load |
Answer: | No it is not. |
Question: | How many Blows per Minute |
Answer: | So, if your power goes out, not only will the camera lose power but also the router, cable modem, etc. If you want to avoid the power outage issue entirely then UPSs are a good option. Not perfect but good. I'm a bit surprised they still sell this camera since it's an older model. It's OK for the money but if I had a beach house then I could afford something better. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this pound something in place like a regular hammer |
Answer: | The difference is the 119 is a long barrel gun that hits harder and slower and the 123 is a shorty barrel which hits faster bit doesn’t hit as strong as the 119. I have both and prefer the 119. The 123 is too weak. |
Question: | what shank size of chisels does this accept |
Answer: | I would surely think so, seeing as most industrial shops run that high for pressure but would have to confirm with the manufacturer AND you would think it is on the packaging. That’s all I got. |
Question: | Can this break cement |
Answer: | No air control. |
Question: | Will work with my 6 gallon 2.6 scfm at 90 psi |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry. The 123MAX has 3530 blows per minute. |

User questions & answers
Question: | None of these people know what size solid rivets these bits are for. Do so product research ffs |
Answer: | dont know the diameter, but the shanks fit the bauer hammer drill purchased from harbor freight tools. |
Question: | Will these rivet setters work just using a regular hammer? Would these also work for setting tubular rivets too |
Answer: | I used a Bauer 10 amp Rotary Hammer drill and the bits did the job. I guess you should look to see what size bit your drill will accept. My hammer drill knocked out tile removal in a weekend. Your manual should give you this info. Hope this helps! Best, Michael |
Question: | Will these fit a .401 ingersoll rand hammer |
Answer: | If you have a hammer drill use a hex screw extension to lock down on the sds plus bit connection. You would get better performance with Milwaukee sds plus extension with sds plus drill. |
Question: | Will these knock out the pins and bushings for spring brakes on a truck/tractor/semi |
Answer: | Not sure probably China. They did a great job on my Kitchen demo, I would recommend. |

Question: | We would like to know some spec. about this item, 1. Air inlet? 2. stroke length? 3. Speed? 4. length? Thanks a lot |
Answer: | There good size length but not the best quality broke the cutting bit first use tooth broke right off had to buy a matco bit to replace |
Question: | Are replacement needles available? Dale B |
Answer: | Yes, the Ingersoll Rand Chisels will work with any air hammer that accepts the .401 shank. |
Question: | Is a replacement needle attachment available |
Answer: | They recommend using a "whip" hose to connect the tool to the air system. A whip hose is a short flexible hose that is used as the quick connect. One end of the whip hose connect to the tool and the quick connect is at the other end. Search Amazon for a whip hose. The reason to not put a quick connect at the tool is that it places extreme mechanical stress on the tool. |
Question: | Does the CP replacement needles fit |
Answer: | Yes you can, and this air hammer has more jam that mac tools one! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How difficult was it to get the spring on? I think this one might have bad threading because it doesn't seem to want to go on |
Answer: | The spring has a rounded hook with a tab on one end to hold the shaft of the chisel loosely in place. That end is on top. The other end just has a tab. If you use the two tabs on the spring to twist it on and off the spring will thread more easily. The tabs relieve the tension of the spring. |
Question: | Would this work for grooving out cracks in concrete for patching |
Answer: | Yes indeed. I have done some work to repair concrete cracks and the tool works great. It's best if you have an ample air supply. |
Question: | Would this work with concrete |
Answer: | Yes for small chucks |
Question: | Would this work for demo of a brick chimney |
Answer: | Definately. I use it for ceramic tile and stone demo. You will need plenty of air tho. I use a large compressor for this |

Answer: | The model 121-K6 is manufactured in China. |
Question: | Can this tool be used with a set of rivet tools to set rivets |
Answer: | David, although this is a great air hammer w/chisel set, I do not think this is what your looking for. The only chisel in the set that may help you with your question is the pointed or center punch chisel that would allow you to center punch the rivet after installation. Hope this helps |
Question: | Is this unit strong enough to remove axles splines from hub assemblies? This is dealing with automobiles & axles |
Answer: | Nah, this one really sucks. I've needed it for 2 jobs and it was useless for both. Don't waste your money |
