12 best sharpening tool for grinding wheels
A sharpening tool for grinding wheels is a specialized tool used to maintain and restore the cutting effectiveness of grinding wheels, which are commonly used in various power tools, including bench grinders and angle grinders. Keeping grinding wheels sharp is essential for achieving precise and efficient grinding or sharpening tasks. Here's what you should know about sharpening tools for grinding wheels:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a sharpening tool for grinding wheels is to true and dress the grinding wheel. Truing refers to the process of making the grinding wheel perfectly round, while dressing involves removing any embedded metal debris or glazed material from the wheel's surface. Both processes help ensure the grinding wheel operates efficiently and produces smooth, precise results.
Wheel Dresser: A wheel dresser is a common type of sharpening tool used for grinding wheels. It typically consists of a handle and a hardened, star-shaped wheel made of abrasive material. By running the wheel dresser across the grinding wheel's surface while the grinder is in motion, it removes material and exposes fresh abrasive grains, rejuvenating the wheel's cutting abilities.
Diamond Dresser: Diamond dressers are another type of sharpening tool used for grinding wheels. They feature a single-point or multiple-point diamond attached to a handle. Diamond dressers are used to create a clean, sharp profile on the grinding wheel's surface. The hardness of the diamond allows it to cut into the grinding wheel effectively.
Wheel Dressing Techniques: To properly use a sharpening tool for grinding wheels, you should follow these steps: a. Ensure the grinding wheel is turned off and the power source is disconnected. b. Hold the wheel dresser securely and apply it gently against the spinning grinding wheel's surface. c. Move the wheel dresser across the wheel in a controlled manner, removing any irregularities or contaminants. d. Monitor the grinding wheel's condition, and repeat the dressing process as necessary to maintain its shape and cutting performance.
Safety Precautions: When working with grinding wheels and sharpening tools, safety is paramount. Always wear appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses or a face shield to protect your eyes from sparks and debris. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for both the grinding wheel and the sharpening tool.
Regularly dressing and maintaining grinding wheels with the appropriate sharpening tools is crucial for achieving clean and precise grinding results. Neglecting wheel maintenance can result in reduced performance, increased vibration, and a higher risk of accidents during grinding operations.

User questions & answers
Question: | what exactly comes with this? can i sharpen my lathe tools with just this one thing? doesn't say "whats in the box |
Answer: | I bought one about a year ago to sharpen my lathe tools, lawn mower blades, and more. You get the two adjustable arms as pictured. They move in and out of the jig plate and clamp securely to get just the right angle on your tools. You have to supply a piece of plywood about 2.5 feet wide by about 1.5 feet deep which you clamp you grinder to and screw the "jig plates" onto the plywood. It also comes with an excellent DVD movie tutorial that explains in detail how to sharpen common lathe tools such as the skew chisel, roughing gouges, parting tools, and bowl gouges. I especially like the flat plate about 2 inches by 4 inches and which clamps at any angle. Of course it takes some time, and some trial and error to get the angle set just right, but after that assuming you are sharpening the same tool, it is set for re-sharpening at exactly the same angle as before. I love my Wolverine Jig and I can't imagine sharpening lathe tools without a similar device. This one has been copied by everyone else, but if the price is right, why not buy the original? |
Question: | Unboxing the jig has 4 aluminum brackets without any description of what they are. What are these for, 2 sq brackets & 2 angled with slots |
Answer: | 2 years later, I have the same question about the metal brackets. There were no instructions with the grinding jig, but I found them on the Rockler website. However, there is no mention of the brackets. |
Question: | How is this better than a home made jig that has an arm that slides in and out and a pocket on the end of the arm?i |
Answer: | I used an homemade oak version for years. This one has two advantages. First, it's designed and manufactured perfectly. It's solid and repeats every time with its square tubes. The locking handle/cam is better than my 5/16 bolts and washers. Second, the tubes are interchangeable so you can switch wheels with either jig. |
Question: | will this jig work well with a 6" grinder |
Answer: | It works fine with my 6" grinder. The directions say that it should be set up so the axis of the grinding wheel is 6 1/4 to 6 1/2" above the jig bottom so I glued up 3 pieces of 3/4 ply ( total 2 1/4" thick) to mount the motor. This turned out to be exactly right for both the jig and the platform to work. The third Amazon product photo shows it being used with a 6" grinder. In that photo the motor block appears to be 2+ inches thick |

The ATLIN grinding wheel dressing tool is an indispensable set of bench grinder accessories used for restoring, truing, and sharpening your grinding wheels.
As an abrasive wheel is used, it loads up full of material, clogging the pores and dulling the grains of the abrasive material. A dull wheel means you get to spend more time and effort grinding a work piece. The ATLIN grinder wheel dresser remedies this thanks to its industrial-grade diamond dressing stone. Firmly press the stone dresser up against your wheel and in under a minute you will see a clean, open, sharp cutting surface appear, ready to grind metal just like new.
Unlike competing carbon steel alternatives, this bench grinder dressing tool features a 1.7” long surfacing head. The surfacing head is large enough to cover the entire face of your grinding wheels, therefore guaranteeing a square, even result. In addition, the industrial-grade diamond matrix will far outlast carbon steel alternatives.
What are the dimensions and contents?
(1x) 36 grit
(1x) 120 grit
Both are the same size. The tool has an abrasive surface area of 1.77” x 0.58”, Overall tool length is 4.5”, Knurled handle length is 4.0”
Can the head be replaced?
Yes, the surfacing head simply unscrews from the handle and can be replaced when worn down
How long does the surfacing head last?
This depends entirely on your usage and is impossible to guarantee. For the average hobbyist, the diamond wheel dresser should last a number of years.
- Save Time, Save Money – The ATLIN grinding wheel dresser removes loaded up material, fixes imperfections, trues, and sharpens the grains of your grinding wheels. The result is less heat buildup, faster grinding, and a superior finish on your work pieces
- A Wheel Dresser That Lasts – Forget about constantly replacing carbon steel dressers. The dressing stone of the ATLIN grinding dresser is made up of an industrial-grade diamond matrix bonded onto a solid block of steel. Have no doubt that diamond will far outlast carbon steel alternatives
- True Your Wheels – This grinding wheel truing tool makes resurfacing a wheel easy due to its long surfacing head. In seconds you can true up a wobbling wheel, remove grooves, fix out of round wheels, and square up skewed wheels
- Restore Your Wheels – This grinder dressing tool will breathe life into even your most worn out abrasive wheels. The diamond dresser cuts the abrasive material to expose a sharp, open, clean abrasive face capable of grinding metal just like new
- Size, Specs, Contents – Includes 36 grit and 120 grit dressing tools. Diamond head has an abrasive surface area of 1.77” x 0.59”, Overall tool length is 4.5”, Knurled handle length is 4.0”

The WOLVERINE Grinding Jig is the CORE component of the ONEWAY WOLVERINE line of grinding products.
Producing razor sharp tools and finely finished bevels has moved from an art into a science.
Owning the WOLVERINE Grinding Jig will ultimately save you time, frustration and money. You can now grind your tools properly the first time. Uniform cutting edges and single facet bevels will give you safer, more predictable tools. Because you are grinding your tools less, both your wheels and tools will last longer.
This Grinding Jig can be easily used to sharpen the following tools:
- gouges
- chisels
- scrapers
- parting tools
- skews
- carving tools
The WOLVERINE Grinding Jig will speed up your grinding, give you sharper tools, and prolong the life of both tools and wheels.
The Grinding Jig comes with two bases - grinders come with two wheels, so we include two bases.
Vari-Grind
The Wolverine Vari-Grind will properly shape and maintain the edge on standard bowl gouges, the modern side grind (also known as the Ellsworth grind, Liam O'Neil, or Irish grind), and the traditional fingernail shape for spindle work detailing. ONEWAY has spent considerable time and effort to develop a system which will consistently produce sharp, repeatable geometries on turning tools for the wood turner.
Three tools that are very popular and useful are the fingernail shape, the traditional bowl gouge and the side grind configurations. These shapes however are difficult both to grind and to maintain.
This single jig will produce every shape from the first mentioned fingernail grind right up to the side grind and everything in between to suit your needs.
- Produce razor sharp tools and finely finished bevels
- INCLUDES: the Wolverine Sharpening System & The VARI-GRIND jig
- The Wolverine System was designed to replace conventional light duty toolrests with heavy duty universal grinding and dressing jigs for low cost grinders.
- The Wolverine Original Vari-Grind Jig will properly shape and maintain the edge on standard bowl gouge, the modern side grind shape and the traditional fingernail shape.
- Grinder and Turning Tools NOT included
User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with a DVD |
Answer: | Yes. The DVD does come with it. |
Question: | Will this work well with a delta 8" variable speed grinder, its lowest speed is 2000 rpms |
Answer: | Yes, I have a delta variable speed 8" grinder with CBN wheels and I use a wolverine grinding jig. I never had a jig that workers so well. I recommen it highly. Thanks , Nelson |
Question: | I have a 6” variable speed grinder Will system work with that size wheel |
Answer: | It is probably better with an 8" grinding wheel, but adjusting the mountings I would think a 6" would work also. |
Question: | What comes in the box |
Answer: | Just like you see in the pictures, it has two bases so you can grind on either wheel, it has the vari-grind attachment for bowl gouges. You must purchase the skew grinding attachment to sharpen your skew. Follow the directions with it and have sharp tools to turn with. |
- The Adjustable Replacement Tool Rest Sharpening Jig will allow you to locate all the basic sharpening positions with your bench grinder (grinder not included). The unique miter slide tool holder design allows the jig to be used more or less as a stone, which easily guides your blades, turning tools and chisels. Solid aluminum construction provides you with a smooth sliding, side to side action when sharpening.
- The sharpening jig works with most power or hand grinders that has or had a tool rest. It is the ideal replacement for the factory tool rest that comes with many bench grinders. The jig offers much more flexibility in terms of what you can get done than with the standard factory tool rest. The plate is offset for short chisels, such as Japanese or western butt chisels.
- The Sharpening jig can be used with 6" or 8" bench grinders and on many belt sanders/grinders. It quickly and easily mounts directly to the bench in front of the grinder with a track style base and can be readily folded out of the way for freehand grinding if so desired. It can also be completely removed by loosening the large wing knob and sliding the jig from the track base.
- Another great feature is that the jig can be adjusted forward and backward for just the right angle. Some aftermarket and expensive tool rests don’t move and adjust in this fashion. This can be very limiting your ability to be accurate with your angles. The platform straddles wheels up to 1" wide. The Jig also now includes internal lock washer for even more stability!
- The unique ratcheting handles lock the adjustable rest solidly in position and can be moved out of the way after locking to keep from accidentally bumping them. You can easily move the tool rest from one grinder wheel to another or quickly remove it from the bench when not needed for grinding. Some assembly required. The bench top wood mounting screws are included.
User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with anything to determine the correct angle? Say 25 and 30 degrees |
Answer: | I am sure water will work on it. It sharpens fine, but the threads where the guide rod screws in were all buggered on the unit I got, and the “F” clamp that came with it was of poor quality and did not work, and I have never seen a “F” clamp that would not work. Very poor quality clamp. |
Question: | How long is the base rail that gets attached to the grinder table |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Is this jig specific to 8" grinding wheels or will it work with smaller wheels such as a 6" wheel |
Answer: | It comes with Diamond Stones and an Ceramic Stone. |
Question: | Without using the groove, can this be used to hollow grind a knife blade |
Answer: | Yes, it is coming after Christmas. |

NEW VERSION as of Oct 2019 with Internal Lock Washers for even better platform stability!
Made from aluminum and completely adjustable, the Tool Rest Sharpening Jig has more features than similar systems that are three times as much. Not only can you adjust the platform, you can also move the jig in and out on the Mounting Track Base. Most others have a base that is fixed and completely non-adjustable. Some of those "high end" jigs don't have a miter slide guide for keeping your tools at the proper angle and for making the sharpening process easier. Why not get more bang for your buck and purchase the Peachtree Tool Rest Sharpening Jig System!
Ratcheting Handles
NEW VERSION as of Oct 2019 with Internal Lock Washers for even better platform stability! Simply make your adjustments and conveniently position the ratcheting handles out of the way so you are not bumping them while you sharpen.
Adjust up, down and lean forward or back
Loosen the ratchet handles to adjust up and down and tilt the platform. Once your positions are found, secure both handles, then slightly loosen the bottom handle and lean the top half exactly where you would like for it to be.
Slide jig front to back
Loosen the base knob and you can adjust the whole unit by sliding it from the back to the front to achieve the perfect angle for the exact tool you will be sharpening.
The perfect fit for just the right angle
Having the ability to "wrap" the platform around the 1" grinding wheel is important when trying to achieve just the right angle for your tools to be sharpened. Some sharpening jigs don't have this feature and many of us simple "cut" out a slot on the platform. The Tool Rest Sharpening Jig has the slot milled right into the table so you don't run into that "road block" when setting up the angle for your next sharpening job.
Miter Slide Tool Holder
This unique device keeps your tool flat against the platform to help produce excellent results. Once your tool is secure and the platform and jig are set to the correct spot and correct angle, simple place the tool holder in the slot and work the tool side to side across the face of the grinding stone. This method also allows you to set your angle in such a way so you only take off just the right amount of material and nothing more.
Sharpen turning tools, chisels, plane irons and a whole lot more!
The Tool Rest Sharpening Jig is an accessory that should be in most every work shop where sharp tools are needed. It not only makes the sharpening process easier, it makes it quicker. With the same features plus quite a few more than the "high end" system, this jig brings you tremendous value in comparison to the name brand versions. Not only is this jig a great value, it can also handle most any type of tool that needs to be sharpened. Sharpen turning tools, chisels, plane irons and a whole lot more with the Tool Rest Sharpening Jig from Peachtree Woodworking Supply!

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this wheel good for grinding tungsten |
Answer: | Manufactures state "HHS" only. I would use diamond stone on tungsten myself, if you mean tungsten carbide inserts. If you mean tungsten tools. I have no idea as I have never use a pure tungsten tool. I have used tungsten in aircraft and it is "hell" on drills, etc. Maybe a ceramic of silica stone would work. |
Question: | Will this wheel work on a regular grinder |
Answer: | If you are referring to the regular high speed, 3700 rpm, grinder, yes it will work, but I think it's designed for the slow speed 1750 rpm grinders.... |
Question: | Nothing in the box except a bushing and the wheel. What is the best way to attach it to an 8-in grinder |
Answer: | I am assuming your grinder has 5/8" shaft and that the bushing is also 5/8". If so, remove old wheel and discard side plates that were used with the old stone wheel. Mount the bushing on the new wheel and slide new wheel and bushing onto shaft with the bushing to the inside and up against the stop on the shaft. Clean the shaft with very fine sandpaper if it is rough or corroded to make mounting easy, but DON'T overdo it and reduce shaft size or trueness. Use original shaft nut to set and lock the wheel in place. The wheels come very true and well balanced from the factory. If you have vibration or wobble suspect the grinder and check for bearing wear and preciseness of the shaft for runout. Feel free to contact me if you need further help. Enjoy! Best way to sharpen high speed steel tools I have used. |
Question: | On a rikon 8" slow speed grinder can i replace one of the standard wheels with a cbn while keeping the other wheel stock? will it still be balanced |
Answer: | Hello, Thanks for your question. Yes, you can mount one of our Hurricane CBN wheels on one side of your grinder. Our new wheels are aluminum. They are lightweight and dynamically balanced at the factory. They will actually be easier for your grinder to handle than the stock vitrified wheel it came with. Thanks again for your question. User questions & answers
Question: | can i use it on the left side on my bench grinder |
Answer: | si, tiene un adaptador |
Question: | Can this be used with a belt sander |
Answer: | I wouldnt suggest it. The attachment is probably too large to fit and i dont think the dremel would provide enough power. I used a Ryobi 19.2V Power drill and it needed full power and speed to polish well. |
Question: | will this sharpen drill bits with a hex attached, similar to the Milwaukee Shockwave |
Answer: | YES HOOK AND LOOP |
Question: | What size drill bits can it sharpen up to |
Answer: | The most effective/compatible products for the sponge pads are: Swirl n Scratch Remover, Polishing Compound, Rubbing Compound. If you are a total cheapskate, toothpaste in a pinch. For the buffers, it's basically car wax, but really AFTER you have taken off most of the dried wax (and surface dirt) with shop towels. For a mirror finish, don't skip any steps...hand wash your car well, use any car clay kit to lift off surface particles & contaminants from your old wax and clear coat. Then, apply compound sparingly around the sponge (5-6 dots) and use light, even pressure to "cut" the top layer of topcoat. Do even rows, steady light pressure and one panel at a time...keep the tool moving...the point is to micro-abrade...just smooth the surface of clear coat, not take it all off! Done properly, that sponge step should remove most scratches and surface dullness, even on headlights. Rinse or wipe the compound residue off. Then, apply a good paste wax or liquid wax, let it dry, then remove with shop towels, etc. Only then do you whip out the buffer pads and polish it up to a jewel finish. Apply sunglasses! You can hand wash these pads in DAWN...with care, they last a few applications. |
