User questions & answers
Question: | I have a chuck that is 1"-8tpi female thread (nova 48111), it doesn't fit on this lathe. what adapter should i buy |
Answer: | Buy a 3/4" 16 TPI to 1" 8 TPI adapter. If you further questions go to http://www.woodturningz.com/downloads/w1704_ds.pdf for the specs on this machine. |
Question: | is there an adapter for the face plate for mounting live center chucks? I bought one but won't line up with holes |
Answer: | I'm not sure if they make the adapter to mount on the face plat. I have a 2" diameter three jaw, self centering scroll type chuck that i bought from Amazon that ihave used that works great, but i think that the holes in the face plate is for mounting a backing block to the piece of wood stock to turn a bowl. It says in the manual that you glue the block to the wood your turning and use the holes to screw the block on to face plate. Hope this helped. |
Question: | What size wood stock can it hold? How about something like 12'' long by 8" wide piece of wood |
Answer: | The length it will hold will be dependant upon what chucks you have in the head and tail stock. The bulkier the chucks, the shorter the length it will handle. I'd say it will hold 12" lengths unless your chucks are sizable. I wouldn't try more than 4" width stock unless it was short. Although the lathe may hold the stock, it would be too much for the motor. The intended purpose of this lathe is to make small things like ink pens, Christmas ornaments, small toys like tops or yo-yo's and tool handles etc. If you want to mount 12" X 8" stock you should be looking at full sized lathes. |
Question: | is there anyway to secure to a bench |
Answer: | Yes. It has has three holes in the base that you can bolt it down with. I bolted mine down on a metal stand. It holds it down real solid. Mine is the Shop Fox W1704 also. It is well built. I really like mine. Hope this helps! |

Question: | I have this Wen 3424 lathe. Now I need some drill bits to do inside stuff |
Answer: | As long as you get a chuck with the righ taper then you should be fine. I believe the 3424 is a MT2 |
Question: | Cast iron or steel construction |
Answer: | Cast iron |
Question: | Just got into ring making and want to know if this is suitable for beginner/intermediate ring turning |
Answer: | For wood rings, yes. You can get metal ring inserts made of sterling, titanium, etc. You will need a special chuck to hold your small work, or use hollowed ring blank secured to a dowel. When shape is finished, leave on lathe to sand and polish. Whoever told you no was presuming rings can only be made of metal. |

Powered by a 1-horsepower max, 1,725-rpm motor, the Delta 46-460 industrial 12-1/2-inch variable-speed midi lathe provides a 12-1/2-inch swing capacity--the largest in its class. Variable speed with three pulley-speed ranges makes it easy to select the required speeds needed to turn a project without changing belt position.
Forward and Reverse Provides a Superior Finish
For accuracy and precision, forward and reverse functions allow the turner to achieve a superior finish. As woodworkers know, sanding a turned piece with the grain causes the wood fibers to lie down and remain rough while sanding a turned piece against the grain will shave the wood fibers smooth. Rotating the turned piece in both directions is the way to achieve a truly smooth finish, yet it often involves remounting the work piece backwards--a time-consuming and often impossible task. With the 46-460, this process is simplified. With a quick flip of the switch, it's done.
Patented Belt-Tensioning System for Fast Speed Changes and Longer Tool Life
A patented belt-tensioning system makes for quick speed changes, and sets the belt at the correct tension every time for maximum power transfer and longer tool life. And large objects are no problem with the six-groove belt that provides superior power for effortless turning.
Cast-Iron Construction for Durability and Strength
Durable and stable with all cast-iron construction, the 46-460 also includes a three-inch face plate, and 6-inch and 10-inch tool rests for tool support in a variety of turning applications.
Warranty Information
The Delta 46-460 industrial 12-1/2-inch variable-speed midi lathe is backed by a five-year warranty.
What's in the Box
12-1/2-inch variable-speed midi lathe, 6-inch and 10-inch tool rests, chrome 3-inch face plate, tool rest base, knockout bar, live center, wrenches, and manual.

Answer: | 3 ranges each variable. Speed: 250-700, 600-1,800 and 1,350-4,000 RPM |
Question: | I just bought this lathe. The forward/reverse switch seems reversed. Lathe turns forward when switch is in reverse position, and vice versa |
Answer: | looking from the tailpiece toward the chuck: forward is counter clockwise reverse is clockwise. Mine seems to turn a little slower in reverse so if yours is wired wrong at the switch you might consider that. I live in Texas and turn mostly mesquite wood and this lathe does a fine job with it. |
Question: | Is it mt1 or mt |
Answer: | Mt2 |

Question: | Can we get an update on the set screw question? Conflicting info here. Pics show set screw |
Answer: | The set screw was added about 6 months ago. All current stock should have the set screw. |
Question: | Does this require anything else or can i just slap it right on to the lathe |
Answer: | You could just slap it right on to the lathe - - assuming that it has the same threads as your lathe spindle and assuming that you aren't trying to run it in reverse, and assuming that you have some screws to screw into the wood. |
Question: | how do you know the thread sizeof your lathe |
Answer: | I needed the faceplate to fit on an adapter for my Shopsmith lathe and the only adapter had only one thread size and so that is the one I bought. |
Question: | Does this item have set screws for reverse sanding. Also, is there a way to remove it from lathe once it tightens |
Answer: | No, there is no set screw. There are flats on the back @ 1-5/8" spacing...we hope to have some wrenches for these, but probably not till late fall. However, you could modify a Nova 23079 wrench (made for the Nova Chuck inserts) by grinding the opening slightly larger (stock it is just over 1.5"). |

Answer: | They are the standard diameter to fit most wood lathes. Ed |
Question: | Why do you not make this tool rest in a 1" diameter post |
Answer: | I agree that this might be a good idea; however, since PSI has a clientele that primarily focuses on pen turning, a 1" post would be overkill. I actually made a 1" collar about 2" long with a below flush sets crew that I can tighten up on the tool rest. Then the tool rest with the collar attached will fit in and tighten up like it should. I know this didn't actually answer your question, but I do hope it helps! |
Question: | Anyone know if this fits in the HF Item#34706 wood lathe with the 33" bed |
Answer: | I don't know if they will fit, these are 5/8", so I would suggest you measure your current post size. Also, these are definitely not worthless. I abandoned my Jet tool rest and use only these now. I guess it's personal preference, but I like the round bars. They tend not to pit because the pressure is spread across a larger area. |
Question: | How long is the post |
Answer: | The post is just long enough for my Jet 1221VS lathe. These are kind of cheap and you would be better off to spend more money and buy the 2 piece rests. |

This is an authentic Easy Wood Tools (EWT) Ci2-R2-NR Patented Negative Rake Carbide Cutter designed to fit the Easy Start, Mini and Mid Size Easy Roughers. Negative rake cutters have been shown to produce better cuts in man-made acrylics, hard exotic woods and end grain. Beware of cheap imitations of Easy Wood Tools carbide cutters. Authentic EWT cutters have the optimal 3G’s of Carbide - Grade, Grind, and Geometry. 1) The Right Grade: Carbide is basically a mixture of tungsten powder and cobalt that is fused together under high pressure and heat. The ratio of cobalt to tungsten and the size of the tungsten particle are referred to collectively as the ‘grade’. There are literally hundreds of conceivable grades and no ‘one grade’ of carbide is suited for all applications – whether wood cutting or metal cutting. The perfect combination of cobalt and grain size in Authentic EWT Carbide cutters, yield a cutting edge that is both the keenest and the most durable grade for woodturning available with today’s carbide technology. 2) The Right Grind: EWT grinds all of their cutters on super rigid CNC grinders to prevent micro chipping of the cutting edges. EWT uses the proper grit diamond wheels to produce the flattest, truest surfaces possible with minimal grinding scratches left on the surface. All the cutter surfaces are ground in the optimum sequence to bring the edge into keenness during the very last process, or once again micro chipping of the cutting edges will occur if the proper sequence is not followed. 3) The Right Geometry: EWT grinds all their cutters to the correct angles and geometries specifically for woodturning. This produces an edge that cuts both cleanly and safely for all skill levels.
- Authentic Easy Wood Tools Ci2-R2-NR Patented Negative Rake Carbide Cutter - Fits Easy Wood Tools Easy Start, Mini and Mid-Size Roughers
- Designed specifically for turning man-made resins, acrylics and extreme hardwoods. It is a "Game Changer" for turning these materials. The EWT Patented Negative Rake Cutters have virtually eliminated catches and tear-out whilst turning expensive blanks. Also leaves ultra-smooth finish = less sanding!
- Just like our Standard Cutters, when one side of the cutter gets dull, simply turn it to a new side and continue turning. When all sides are used, you just replace the cutter. You'll devote more time to turning instead of wasting hours sharpening your tools, and you'll save money in the long run, too.
- Also works great for final passes on any type of wood...which equals less sanding
- Designed and Manufactured 100% in the USA

Question: | What is the difference between the 1600nr and the 2600nr |
Answer: | The size of the cutter & size of Easy Wood tool they fit. 1600NR fits Full size & Pro size roughers. 2600NR fits Mini & Mid size roughers and also the Easy Start rougher. |
Question: | Will this fit the full size simple wood s55d shaft |
Answer: | As I only have Easy Wood Tools, I can’t say if it will fit your Simple Wood shaft. Sorry. But if it helps you: I fit this radial, negative rake shaper on my Ci2 medium size tool shaft. It perfectly replaced the (regular) square rougher that the tool originally came with. |
Question: | What is the size of the machine screw so that I can get a replacement? Mine have stripped out on the first change |
Answer: | Same here. Very poor quality screws |
Question: | Has anyone attempted to sharpen the neg carbide cutters or should i just buy extra |
Answer: | Sharpening a negative rake carbide cutter would be a tedious job with questionable results. One would have to GENTLY strop the edge from the bottom up with a diamond stone to create a very slight burr. I throw them away and buy new ones. Time is worth more than the protracted effort to sharpen and if you don't get it just right it will be a wasted effort. |

The Nova 12" Cole jaws are a very versatile set designed primarily for the re-chucking of bowls to remove chuck marks or to re-shape the bottom of bowls that have already been turned. There is also provision to mount the 50mm, Step, and 100mm jaws onto the Cole jaws which enhances their use considerably. All the facilities of the other jaw sets can be fully utilized in conjunction with the Cole jaws. These jaws more than any other really begin to explore the tremendous versatility of the Nova Chuck. A special woodworm screw (optional) can be used for initial bowl mounting. With this combination of holding methods, it is possible to turn a bowl from rough blank to a completely finished smooth bowl with just this one jaw set. The Nova Chuck Cole jaw combination is the only chucking system to allow such a complete facility without any complex jaw changes or different set ups. There are a number of re-chucking options; false wooden jaws can be added, wooden dowels used or rubber stoppers which are provided with the basic kit. This package also includes 4 spare jaw mounting screws....yes, you will need these eventually......!

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the smallest size bowl that will fit in this cole jaws. Does it have a range like from 12inches down to 3 inches |
Answer: | You could externally grip a small bowl of about 2-1/4". If you want to internally grip (expansion mode), 3.5" would be about the smallest. |
Question: | are the jaws 12 inch open or closed. I have a 12 in lathe. 6 inch swing |
Answer: | 12" is closed...these will not work for you. The Nova JSCOLE ones are the 10" ones that are designed for 12" lathes. |
Question: | Will it fit the Nova G3 chuck |
Answer: | Yes, that is what my jaws are on |
Question: | What's the largest diameter it will accept? Is it really |
Answer: | There is some variation with the chuck you use. The plates form an outside circle of 12"....if you are working on expansion mode, you can get inside 12". On a Titan you may just grab 12", although a SN2 you'll be a bit below that. If you are regularly working with bowls 12", I might recommend the 6039 extension kit which gets you up to 15"...that way you are not working at the very edge of your chuck's reach. You can buy this extension kit on Amazon, and we also offer the a kit with the 6040, 6030 AND the 6039 in a package here as well. |
