12 best faceplate for wood lathe
A faceplate for a wood lathe is an essential accessory used in woodworking to secure and hold the workpiece in place while it is being turned on the lathe. Here's what you should know about faceplates for wood lathes:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a faceplate is to provide a flat, sturdy, and secure mounting surface for a workpiece on a lathe. It allows you to rotate and shape the workpiece as needed.
Design: A typical wood lathe faceplate is a circular metal plate with multiple holes, usually threaded, distributed evenly across its surface. These holes are used to attach the workpiece to the faceplate securely.
Attachment: To use a faceplate, you screw it onto the lathe's spindle or headstock. The workpiece is then attached to the faceplate by using screws or other fasteners through the holes in the faceplate.
Workpiece Variety: Faceplates are versatile and can accommodate a wide range of workpiece shapes and sizes. They are commonly used for turning bowls, platters, and other irregularly shaped objects.
Stability: Using a faceplate provides greater stability and control when turning larger or unbalanced pieces of wood.It minimizes the risk of the workpiece coming loose during the turning process.
Customization: Some woodworkers may customize their faceplates by adding wooden or rubber inserts to provide a more secure and non-marring grip on the workpiece.
Safety: When using a faceplate, it's essential to ensure that the workpiece is securely fastened to the plate. Always follow safety precautions when operating a lathe to prevent accidents.
Balance: Balancing the workpiece on the faceplate is crucial to avoid excessive vibrations, which can affect the quality of the turning and put stress on the lathe's motor and components.
Alternate Chucking Methods: While faceplates are commonly used, woodworkers may also use other chucking methods like scroll chucks or collets, depending on the specific requirements of the project.
Maintenance: Like any tool, faceplates should be kept clean and in good condition. Periodically check the threads and fasteners for wear and damage.
Accessory Options: Some lathes may have specialized faceplates with additional features, such as indexing holes for creating evenly spaced patterns on turned objects.
Compatibility: When purchasing a faceplate, ensure that it is compatible with your specific wood lathe model in terms of size and threading.
Faceplates for wood lathes are essential tools for woodturners, enabling them to securely mount and shape workpieces of various sizes and shapes. When used correctly and safely, they enhance the precision and efficiency of woodworking projects involving a lathe.

Question: | Will it fit on jet 1221 vs |
Answer: | Yes it will the jet gas a 1inch by 8 thread per inch drive |
Question: | What is the actual diameter of the 3" face plate? I need it to fit in a pocket made by a 3" forstner bit. My " 3 inch" face plates are 3 + inch |
Answer: | Can't day if this will help- I bought a 4 inch face plate with two 4 hole bolt circles. The diameter was 3.992". So if the manufacture holds the tolerances then you might expect the 3 inch item to be slightly under 3 inches. If you found that it was slightly over size could you install it on your lathe and trim the excess with a metal file resting on the tool rest. You will want a little clearance to allow for out of round or run-out after the mortise is cut. |

Question: | do these have a setscrew to lock on spindle for reverse turning |
Answer: | This one doesn’t have a set screw |
Question: | Is the 3” plate exactly 3”?I did see a review saying that the 4” was 3 3/4 that is why I am asking |

Question: | Will this work on a shopsmith |
Answer: | I think the Shopsmith Mark V lathe has a 5/8" spindle, which would not fit this Faceplate unless you get a 5/8" to 1" adapter. |
Question: | Will it fit on a tool shop wood lathe |
Answer: | I am sure that they come in different sizes but there a4e two popular sizes in the larger lathes, 1in 8, and 1 1/4 x 8. The larger size would require an adapter which is readily available. I have the larger one now but keep an adapter to make some of my old tooling fit. Also the 1x8 tooling is many times more easily found and therefore cheaper. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It says right in the description that it has locking set screws, So does it have them or not |
Answer: | The 6” Faceplate with 1-1/4” x 8tpi threading should have a single locking set screw to lock the faceplate to the lathe shaft. If by chance you have a recent model (this change was instituted about a year ago) that does not, please contact us through Amazon messaging. |
Question: | How long is the threaded part? The spindle on my 3520B is 1.25" from the shoulder to the tip |
Answer: | It's going to be a tad short on the 3520B - that lathe has the longest spindle of any on the market, and I've run into this once before. You will need to shim it a bit so it doesn't protrude through. |
Question: | Wil this fit a jet 920n lathe |
Answer: | It will fit any lathe if you buy the correct insert. I have a powermatic with 1 1/4 tip shaft. Works well with it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can we get an update on the set screw question? Conflicting info here. Pics show set screw |
Answer: | The set screw was added about 6 months ago. All current stock should have the set screw. |
Question: | Does this require anything else or can i just slap it right on to the lathe |
Answer: | You could just slap it right on to the lathe - - assuming that it has the same threads as your lathe spindle and assuming that you aren't trying to run it in reverse, and assuming that you have some screws to screw into the wood. |
Question: | how do you know the thread sizeof your lathe |
Answer: | I needed the faceplate to fit on an adapter for my Shopsmith lathe and the only adapter had only one thread size and so that is the one I bought. |
Question: | Does this item have set screws for reverse sanding. Also, is there a way to remove it from lathe once it tightens |
Answer: | No, there is no set screw. There are flats on the back @ 1-5/8" spacing...we hope to have some wrenches for these, but probably not till late fall. However, you could modify a Nova 23079 wrench (made for the Nova Chuck inserts) by grinding the opening slightly larger (stock it is just over 1.5"). |

Question: | do you have a face plate with centering hole thats 1 1/4 8 TPI, in 3" and |
