13 best breaker bars

A breaker bar, also known as a breaker wrench, is a hand tool used in automotive and mechanical applications. It is designed to provide extra leverage when loosening or tightening stubborn fasteners, such as nuts and bolts. Here's what you need to know about breaker bars:

  1. Design: A typical breaker bar consists of a long, straight metal shaft with a square drive on one end and a handle or grip on the other end.The square drive is where you attach sockets of various sizes to work with different fasteners.

  2. Purpose: The primary purpose of a breaker bar is to provide additional torque or leverage to overcome resistance when working with tight or rusted fasteners. It allows users to apply force more effectively than a standard socket wrench.

  3. Length: Breaker bars are significantly longer than regular socket wrenches, with lengths ranging from 12 inches to over 40 inches. The extended length helps amplify the applied force, making it easier to loosen stubborn fasteners.

  4. Socket Compatibility: Breaker bars are compatible with standard socket sets. You can attach sockets of various sizes to the square drive end, allowing you to work with a wide range of fastener sizes.

  5. Use Cases:

    • Automotive Maintenance: Breaker bars are commonly used by mechanics and automotive enthusiasts to remove lug nuts from car wheels, especially when they are overtightened or stuck due to corrosion.
    • Heavy Machinery: In industrial settings, breaker bars are used to tackle larger bolts and nuts found in heavy machinery and equipment.
    • Construction: Construction workers and contractors may use breaker bars to handle large and stubborn fasteners in building and infrastructure projects.
  6. Operation: To use a breaker bar, you attach the appropriate socket to the square drive end and then position the breaker bar on the fastener. Apply force to the handle or grip, and the extended length of the tool will help generate significant torque, making it easier to turn the fastener.

  7. Safety: When using a breaker bar, it's essential to exercise caution. Apply force slowly and steadily to prevent sudden jerks that could lead to injury. Be mindful of your positioning to avoid accidentally striking objects or surfaces.

  8. Storage: Store your breaker bar in a clean, dry place, and keep it free from moisture and corrosive substances to maintain its functionality and longevity.

In summary, a breaker bar is a hand tool designed for loosening or tightening stubborn fasteners, such as nuts and bolts. It achieves this by providing extra leverage through its extended length, making it an invaluable tool for automotive repair, heavy machinery maintenance, and construction applications. When used correctly and safely, a breaker bar can make otherwise challenging tasks much more manageable.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this breaker bar handle 250 ft-lbs to 400 ft-lbs
Answer: If the ground has been simulated (I. e. acts as if it were a true ground), it will likely show 'ground'. A 'fake' ground is NOT advisable, as the user will be deceived into thinking there is a valid ground. Use a valid GROUND (to Earth or Uffer contact. See definition of Uffer Ground).

Answer: The Amprobe ST-102B tester is designed to plug into and test 15 Amp, 110-125 VAC receptacles. 50 Amp outlets have a different blade configuration, not compatible with this tester. Also, the 50 Amp outlet is likely 120-240 Volts.
Question: Where can I get repair parts for thois
Answer: This tool can only trace to a circuit breaker via an outlet (90V to 120V). You would not be able to trace from a switch.
Question: What is the warranty on it
Answer: Yes it will. A GFCI trips on a 5- mili-amp current between the hot and ground (the tester simulates the leakage to ground). If your outlets are protected by a GFCI circuit breaker in the panel, that breaker WILL TRIP. If this tester does not trip a device somewhere, than the outlet being tested IS NOT PROTECTED. Either the GFCI is not working, wired incorrectly, or there is no protection.

User questions & answers

Question: How do I warranty my Craftsman breaker bar
Answer: No The circuit has to be energized. Thanks
Question: lifetime or 10 year warranty
Answer: No. That is the adapter unit that is pictured.
Question: If i weigh 170 pounds and i stand on the end of the bar full weight, will i have torqued to 340ft lb?? thank you
Answer: I have the adapter kit. The adapter kit is almost indispensible for finding the breaker driving a light socket where you don't have access to the switch for the light (or don't want to open up the switch are and get access, because it is very hard to use jumper wires to connect the prongs (intended to go into receptacles) on the CS61200 to a round recessed light fixture - you would likely make a short circuit doing it - or shock yourself. So getting the adapter for light sockets is really worth while. Now to the question of SWITCHES. It is really perfectly possible and practical to use a couple of ordinary jumper wires with alligator clips (insulated coverings on the clips being absolutely essential, as most alligator clip jumpers have) to attach the prongs on the CS61200 unit to a switch in question. It is just a bit more dangerous than using the adapter kit because if you don't use electrical tape around the prongs you will have the bare prongs on the CS61200 live with 110 or 220 volts (depending on what the voltage at the switch is). The advantage of the adapter kit is that it covers the connection between the jumpers and the prongs very nicely leaving no dangling hot conductive metal parts exposed anywhere except right at the switch. So I would say that you should get the adapter if you are a) quite a novice about using electricity and not very comfortable KNOWING what to guard or b) are going to do this quite frequently and ALSO want to test receptacles (taping and untaping the prongs would get old after a while and you would probably stop doing it conscientiously and just leave dangling hot prongs and then get hurt). But if you are willing to use electrical tape on each use or don't need to do this often you could just use basic cheap jumper wires and forgo the kit. Hope this helps.
Question: Whats the warranty i just use it and it broke
Answer: I don't have this instrument, but let me tell you how I trace house wiring. Plug a florescent light into the outlet you want to trace to/from, turn it on. Get an AM radio and tune it to an empty location, volume up about half-way. Hold radio against the wall. The static from the light will cause static in the radio. Then move the radio around to follow the "noise" through the walls. It DOES work.

User questions & answers

Question: where is this made
Answer: I used this to break an axle nut loose that was spec'd to 235 ft lbs. Hope that helps.
Question: Where can I buy the knuckle for this bar or a bar like it
Answer: I used this on caliper frame mounting bolts that were on 17 years. Supposed to be 70 ft/lbs torque but with oxidation were much tighter. Came off with no effort
Question: will it work to remove an anode on an r-pod trailer hot water heater
Answer: probably 30-days but contact etoolcity about this.
Question: Could someone use calipers to tell me the thickest part of the handle? Trying to match up a cheater pipe. Thank you
Answer: this one by far, long and away. hands down, no contest. the length of, and pivot point (elbow bend to handle), is so different on matters of physics and my actual personal experience. It's also a well made heavy duty and heavy tool. I bought this specifically for a motorcycle wheel i couldn't get off and had broken a two quality (but obviously wrong) tools on trying to get it off. this thing took it off so easy, with so little pressure from me, that my whole world view changed. A few months later a friend called with a flat and i brought it just in case and i was again very impressed with the physics power of this thing. In that situation I we had a 4-way and it failed to break 2 of the lug nuts and so i broke out the 24 inch and they came off like butter. ___NOW!!!! the only down side is that you will need to buy a socket bit that fits this bar (it's 1/4 inch drive and not the usual, house hold 3/8 inch)....and also the socket bits that fit your needs/lugnuts/whatever... and this may include needing to get 'deep socket' set or bit. They are cheaper to buy a set off of amazon than in a hardware store and it's usually safer to just get the 'deep' since they work on all bolts and nuts...they're just a little heavy. You might also want to pick up some adaptors for both ways so your you can use all your socket wrenches with all the bits. you need a 1/4 inch to 3/8 and a 3/8 to1/4, you can skip the latter if you want but i'd really suggest getting the 1/4 inch to 3/8 so you can use this big bad boy with all your sockets.good luck and please don't hesitate to ask anymore questions.

Answer: As long as its a 1/2 socket then yes
Question: How do I get a replacement head for this? I was taking off a lug nut and it snapped
Answer: I don't know if repair parts are available other than from the manufacturer. That said, if something is broken or bent on the breaker bar, you might want to exchange it for a new one under warranty.
Question: Why are people surprised that a 3/8" breaker bar snaps when trying to loosen lug nuts ? Hello.....ever heard of
Answer: The Great Neck website says there is a lifetime warranty for any manufacturing defects or breaking during normal use.

Product features

230° Pivoting Head

  • Offering a continuous sweep through a usable 230° arc, the pivoting head lets you approach your work from any angle.
  • Since there are no preset head positions, you can move fluidly around obstructions along the path of your handle swing.
  • An internal spring controls the tension of the head, allowing it to hold its position while installing sockets and placing on fasteners.

Sleek, Comfortable Handle

We designed a sleek and simple handle that considers the many ways your hand interacts with the tool. Especially useful for a two-handed grip, the inside edge of the pommel is well-defined to keep your hands from slipping off the end of the handle, while its outer circumference is rounded, allowing you to comfortably apply as much force as needed.

Accurate Working Length

To be clear and consistent about the size of our breaker bars, we use the actual working length (center of drive tang to end of handle), not the overall length of the tool. This avoids any misleading overstatement of size or capability caused by the difference between these measurements.

Strong + Reliable

Our ratchets and breaker bars meet (and most far exceed) minimum industry standards for important baselines like Proof Torque, a measure of strength verified by a single-cycle test* that applies torque until the specified value is reached without failure or any permanent deformation.

*Both proof and fatigue torque specifications were approved by manufacturer on 8/8/2018
