12 best vises

A vise, also spelled "vice" in some regions, is a versatile and indispensable tool in various applications, including woodworking, metalworking, and general construction. It is commonly used for securely holding workpieces in place while performing tasks such as cutting, drilling, grinding, or shaping. Bench vises, in particular, are designed to be mounted to a workbench or a sturdy surface. Here are some key details about bench vises and their uses:

  1. Components: Bench vises typically consist of two main parts: a fixed jaw and a movable jaw. The fixed jaw is attached to the bench, while the movable jaw can be adjusted using a threaded screw mechanism. When the screw is turned, it moves the movable jaw closer to or farther away from the fixed jaw, allowing you to grip and secure various workpieces.

  2. Types of Bench Vises:

    • Woodworking Vises: These vises are often made of wood and are designed for holding wooden pieces securely during tasks such as sawing, chiseling, or carving.
    • Metalworking Vises: Made of metal or heavy-duty materials, these vises are suitable for clamping metal pieces while cutting, drilling, or shaping them.
    • Engineer's Vises: Engineer's vises are robust and versatile, suitable for both woodworking and metalworking tasks.
    • Pipe Vises: Designed specifically for holding pipes, these vises have V-shaped jaws to accommodate round objects.
  3. Features and Functions:

    • Bench vises typically have replaceable jaws to prevent damage to workpieces.
    • Some vises come with swivel bases, allowing you to rotate the vise and workpiece for easier access to different angles.
    • Many bench vises have an anvil surface on the back of the fixed jaw, which can be used for tasks like hammering or flattening metal.
    • Quick-release mechanisms make it easier to open and close the jaws rapidly.
  4. Safety Considerations:

    • Always ensure that the workpiece is securely clamped in the vise before starting any task.
    • Use appropriate protective gear, such as safety glasses, when working with bench vises to prevent injury from flying debris.
  5. Maintenance:

    • Keep the vise clean and lubricated to ensure smooth operation of the screw mechanism.
    • Inspect the vise regularly for any signs of wear or damage, and replace parts as needed.

In conclusion, bench vises are valuable tools for a wide range of applications, providing a secure and stable grip on workpieces, whether in woodworking, metalworking, or other tasks that require precise and controlled clamping.Understanding the type of vise that best suits your needs and maintaining it properly will ensure its long-lasting usefulness in your workshop or job site.

Question: How much distance is between the mounting holes and the edge of the fixed jaw? Can it be mounted 2" from the bench edge and not overhang the bench
Answer: From the middle of mounting screw to the edge of fixed jaw is around 1 1/4. I have my vice mounted 1 1/4 from the edge of my bench and the mounted vice jaw is flush with the bench. Hope this helps!
Question: Is this chinese junk
Answer: My 750-E has no stamp, however, Yost states that this model is made in China. As for junk, my 750-E is undoubtedly quality made and a serious medium duty vise. I have put it through the ringer and it has surpassed my expectations. I have several vises and I now use this one more than the rest. It is an excellent piece of equipment.
Question: What are the size and dimensions of the mount holes
Answer: Mac Yoda: On the vice I received, the mount holes are 1/2 inch in diameter (I measured 0.502" with calipers). There are four mount holes arranged in a square pattern. Going around the square's perimeter, the distance between the hole centers is 4 3/16 inches (I measured 4.83 inches).
Question: What's the difference between the Yost 750-E and the Yost 750-DI
Answer: Well quite a lot is different between the 750-DI vise and the 750-E vise. The 750-DI vise is constructed with heavy duty ductile iron castings (65,000 psi tensile strength) whereas the 750-E vise is constructed with grey iron castings (30,000 psi tensile strength). The difference in the material of construction means the 750-DI vise can withstand higher torques and applied load. The 750-DI is rated to 165 ft-lb torque whereas the 750-E is rated to 95 ft-lb torque. The applied load or clamping pressure on the 750-DI is 7000 pounds whereas the 750-E is 4000 pounds. The shipping weight of the 750-DI is 63 pounds whereas the shipping weight of the 750-E is 42 pounds. The 750-DI has replaceable hardened steel pipe jaws whereas the 750-E has cast in place (non-replaceable) pipe jaws.Jaw width is the same on the 750-DI as compared to the 750-E, both at 5".Jaw opening on the 750-DI is 5" whereas the 750-E is 4".Machinists' jaw throat depth on the 750-DI is 4" whereas the throat depth on the 750-E is 3".Pipe jaw throat depth on the 750-DI is 3" whereas the throat depth on the 750-E is 2-3/4".Pipe diameter clamping capacity on the 750-DI is 1/8" - 3.5" whereas the pipe diameter clamping capacity on the 750-E is 3/8" - 3".The 750-DI has a rotating head that features a pull pin for quick adjustments in 12 different locking positions. The 750-E uses a locking set screw to lock the vise at any angle. All in all the 750-DI vise is twice as strong (robust) as compared to the 750-E vise.

User questions & answers

Question: Cast iron or cast steel? (not the jaws
Answer: It is done by the slip screws on the sides you can see in the picture. you tighten them down and depending upon what you are trying to do is whether it will hold. This is a small inexpensive vise that works well for my intentions. I have it mounted to a piece of 3/4'' plywood and then take it where I need it then clamp it work area. I have a larger 6'' vise for heavier work permanently mounted. I have used vises all my life and never seen one held with pins to keep from swiveling. I like Wilton vises, I have used and purchased many different kinds
Question: Is the swivel base held in place with a friction device or pins that won't slip
Answer: Solid piece of hardware, no problems, top quality, best 5 star rating. 4 standard bolt/screw connections to work bench, installed in minutes. Recommend this product without any reservations.
Question: how does fit on work bench
Answer: You will not likely find any new made in USA vise for much less than $400. Assume all consumer priced vises are made in Asia. You can find USA made vises used for $50 or less but it will probably take you 2-3 days to repair it, rebuild it, and paint it. I did one vintage USA made Craftsmen but all my other vises are made in China. The Quality of vises are all over the map many look identical but fit finish and cast iron quality varies widely. The generic Chinese brands are mostly marginal. But the Yost, Wilton, Craftsman, and Irwin: Even the Asian versions seem to be better built and should work ok for a home owner DYI person. Pro's who depend on a vise to earn a living should plan to spend the 10x to 20x more money required purchase new USA vise.. I am always amazed when people are disappointed they can not buy a world class 30 vise for the price of 3 large pizza's. Another way out for people who are hard on tools but have a tight budget is to buy one or two sizes larger than they think they need 1 or 2 inches of additional jaw width is a big increase in size and weight which can add longevity. Finally a vise is not a hydraulic arbor press and it is non an anvil.
Question: Is this paticular wilton vise made in tbe usa? some wilton vises are chinese now
Answer: The length of the longest piece (when taken apart) of this 2-piece 7-feet casting rod is about 43 inches, and the length of the bag is about 45 inches.

User questions & answers

Question: does this fit a wen 8" drill press table
Answer: I used 3/8” and works perfectly fine.
Question: does anyone know the size of the bolts that mount the clamping pads to the vice
Answer: The slots will take up to a 0.44" dia. bolt. On the same side, the slots range from 2.2" to 4.5" centers mounting range. Across the sides the mounting centers will be 4.3".
Question: what is the distance between mounting holes
Answer: If you mean will this vise fit on the platform of the Dremel Workstation #220-01, yes indeed. This is exactly why I purchased this vise to use under my workstation. You can get one or two bolts to line up with the slots on both parts to secure it. It is a very manageable size compared to a 4" drill press vise, and the price was outstanding.
Question: Will this 3 " fit the dremel rotary work station
Answer: I'm not sure. It's pretty tough and I have wrenched on it pretty good. That said its not a forged steel vice like my grand father had but it's not $200 either. For the $$ it's good.

  • Designed For Applications Including Drilling, Tapping And Reaming
  • Low Profile Clearance For Increased Working Room On Machine Table
  • Hardened V Grooved Jaws Hold Round Shaped Objects Both Vertically And Horizontally

User questions & answers

Question: How is the vice attached to the drill press
Answer: Base 9 3/8" x 10 7/8"Bolt slots 7 7/8" center to center
Question: I am considering buying this vice but I need what the dimensions are of the base & what is the distance center to center on the bolt slots? Thank you
Answer: I use my vise on a vertical mill/drill, although I’ve done very little milling. The jaws on my vise are very tight with no perceivable wobble. Wilton makes good vises, albeit a bit pricey. Sometimes the price is worth it, my vise has proven that to be true.
Question: Do the jaws of the vise wobble, meaning when clamping something with half of the jaws will the other half go in or bend in
Answer: I used 1/2 " carriage bolts with flat washer and wingnut for quick adjustments , !/2 " is the largest that will work. hope this answers your question.
Question: What diameter mounting bolts can you use with this vise
Answer: You can technically mount it with lag bolts, but there's no way to have it centered, or even use it to drill without turning the whole table to a weird angle. Got one of these for my 4208 (4802?) (the 8" model) and it's pretty pointless. You could use any vise and just clamp it on as well as this works.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the jaws made of
Answer: Yes. The gap at the top between the pipe jaws when the main jaws are touching is roughly 1/8”.
Question: Are the pipe jaws set back so they don't interfere with the throat depth when using the main jaws
Answer: The mounting base does extend out further than the face of the stationary jaw. This is a very poorly designed vice. A long object can be clamped in horizontally, but not vertically. If you can find an very old used Yost, those are fantastic. This one is not much of a vice.
Question: Does the base extend out further than the face of the vise making clamping of long objects a problem
Answer: no where on the vise does it say where it was made....most likely china..... but it is a very nice vise for a little over $100.00...good luck finding anything made in america and not spending a small fortune for it.
Question: Is this vise made in the USA
Answer: fit my work bench,great
