14 best large bench vise

A large bench vise, often referred to simply as a bench vise, is a versatile and essential tool commonly used in workshops, garages, and other settings where tasks requiring clamping, gripping, and holding of materials are performed. Here's what you need to know about large bench vises:

  1. Purpose: A bench vise is primarily used for securely holding workpieces in place during various tasks, such as cutting, drilling, shaping, filing, or assembly. It provides a stable and controlled platform for these operations.

  2. Design: A typical large bench vise consists of a sturdy metal body mounted on a workbench or a similar surface. It comprises two main components: the stationary jaw (fixed to the vise body) and the movable jaw (controlled by a threaded screw mechanism). The jaws are typically lined with serrated faces to improve grip and prevent slippage.

  3. Size and Capacity: Large bench vises come in various sizes, and their capacity is usually measured by the width of the jaws. You can find bench vises with jaw widths ranging from 4 inches to over 10 inches or more, depending on your specific needs.

  4. Mounting: Bench vises are typically mounted to a sturdy workbench or work surface using bolts or clamps. The mounting method ensures stability and prevents the vise from moving during use.

  5. Types: There are different types of bench vises available, including woodworking vises, metalworking vises, and multi-purpose vises. Each type is designed for specific tasks and materials. For example, woodworking vises may have wider jaws and are often used in carpentry and woodworking projects.

  6. Rotation: Some bench vises feature a swivel base, allowing the entire vise to rotate horizontally. This feature can be helpful when you need to position the workpiece at different angles for various tasks.

  7. Clamping Force: The threaded screw mechanism in a bench vise allows you to exert a considerable amount of clamping force, which can be adjusted as needed. This ensures a tight grip on the workpiece, even during heavy-duty applications.

  8. Materials: Bench vises are typically constructed from durable materials such as cast iron or steel to withstand the forces generated during clamping and other tasks. This construction ensures the vise's longevity and stability.

  9. Maintenance: Keeping your bench vise clean and lubricated is essential to its proper function. Regularly inspect the screw mechanism, clean any debris or dust, and apply lubricant to ensure smooth operation.

  10. Safety: When using a bench vise, always follow safety guidelines, including wearing appropriate protective gear and ensuring that the vise is securely mounted to prevent accidents.

In summary, a large bench vise is a fundamental hand tool used for clamping and securing workpieces during various tasks in workshops and similar settings. They come in different sizes and types to suit specific applications, and their robust construction allows for reliable and stable performance. Proper maintenance and safety precautions are essential when using a bench vise.

Question: Is this chinese junk
Answer: My 750-E has no stamp, however, Yost states that this model is made in China. As for junk, my 750-E is undoubtedly quality made and a serious medium duty vise. I have put it through the ringer and it has surpassed my expectations. I have several vises and I now use this one more than the rest. It is an excellent piece of equipment.
Question: What are the size and dimensions of the mount holes
Answer: Mac Yoda: On the vice I received, the mount holes are 1/2 inch in diameter (I measured 0.502" with calipers). There are four mount holes arranged in a square pattern. Going around the square's perimeter, the distance between the hole centers is 4 3/16 inches (I measured 4.83 inches).
Question: What's the difference between the Yost 750-E and the Yost 750-DI
Answer: Well quite a lot is different between the 750-DI vise and the 750-E vise. The 750-DI vise is constructed with heavy duty ductile iron castings (65,000 psi tensile strength) whereas the 750-E vise is constructed with grey iron castings (30,000 psi tensile strength). The difference in the material of construction means the 750-DI vise can withstand higher torques and applied load. The 750-DI is rated to 165 ft-lb torque whereas the 750-E is rated to 95 ft-lb torque. The applied load or clamping pressure on the 750-DI is 7000 pounds whereas the 750-E is 4000 pounds. The shipping weight of the 750-DI is 63 pounds whereas the shipping weight of the 750-E is 42 pounds. The 750-DI has replaceable hardened steel pipe jaws whereas the 750-E has cast in place (non-replaceable) pipe jaws.Jaw width is the same on the 750-DI as compared to the 750-E, both at 5".Jaw opening on the 750-DI is 5" whereas the 750-E is 4".Machinists' jaw throat depth on the 750-DI is 4" whereas the throat depth on the 750-E is 3".Pipe jaw throat depth on the 750-DI is 3" whereas the throat depth on the 750-E is 2-3/4".Pipe diameter clamping capacity on the 750-DI is 1/8" - 3.5" whereas the pipe diameter clamping capacity on the 750-E is 3/8" - 3".The 750-DI has a rotating head that features a pull pin for quick adjustments in 12 different locking positions. Question: I'm considering a rotating vise. should there be any concern about breaking the "pin" rotation locking mechanism
Answer: There is no concern because the pin is only used to position the head at the angle you need, then when you tighten the jaws the angle is locked by the force of the jaws and the pin is no longer used and cant be moved.
Question: Does this vise use friction to keep the base in place? Or does it use teeth
Answer: There are two rings of teeth. See pic 4 of my review.
Question: I am seeing conflicts in the warranty coverage. the description stated 10 year warranty. capri stated lifetime warranty. which one is the correct
Answer: Hi Orion, Thank you for the question. The vise has a 10 year warranty. Capri Tools Customer Support
Question: Has anyone had an issue with the vise only having 3 mounting points
Answer: I prefer the 3 mounting points so I can swivel the jaws around the corner of my work bench while I have a pipe clamped on an angle. With 4 points the jaws would hit the 4th point on the corner (clamped at some angles). My old smaller 5" DI Vise also had 3 mounting points and never had an issue even when pounding with a sledge and prying until the work bench levered off the floor.

Rotating Bench Vises Have a New Leader

Capri Tools' superb casting utilizes heavy-duty ductile iron, which measures in at 60,000 psi.

This is What 6,600 lbs of Clamping Force Looks Like

Another advantage of heavy-duty ductile iron is that it affords you 6,600 lbs of clamping force, making every job easier.

Rotate as Desired

Both the head and base can be rotated 360°. While the head can be locked in with a pull pin at 12 different set points, each within 30° of the other, the base can be locked in at whatever point you desire, making this a truly versatile bench vise with all the components to get your job done.

Diamond Patterns Give You Better Grip

Notice the diamond pattern on the grips; this design makes the grip that much more solid.

Large Anvil, Better Work Space

Having a large anvil gives you that extra space for shaping and fabrication per your needs.

12-Point Adjustable Locking Head

The head is capable of being rotated in 12 locking positions by 30° increments making this bench vise even more versatile.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the rear, fixed jaw, extend beyond the base
Answer: Yes, the rear fixed jaw does extend past the base. I added a picture in my review to show this (the update may take a while before it's released by Amazon.)
Question: What is the width of the jaws ? Is it 2" wide or 4" wide
Answer: 4"
Question: What is the width of the jaws ? Is it 2" wide or 4" wide
Answer: The jaws are 4" wide, mate together very well and are of pretty good quality. The absolute maximum clamping reach on mine is 2.75", after that the screw become disengaged. I have been using mine rgularly now or almost 3 years and hve no complaints.
Question: What country is this "imported" from
Answer: Taiwan. USA recognizes Taiwan as a TAA (Trade Act Agreement) Compliant country. Labors in Taiwan cost more due to stringent labor laws set up to protect workers and guarantee a safe work place. Labor laws are lax in China so companies exploit such and hire cheap, less skilled and less knowledgeable workers. Result is less consistency in quality in Made in China products. Taiwan's quality is superior to China's quality.
